Monday Morning – Dancing Into the New Year

Finally, the last day of what's been a pretty nasty year for so many people has arrived and we have a spark of hope to look for just ahead.  So with that thought in mind, I will pass along 2013's first bit of GOOD news.  I have just checked and HGTV will once again be broadcasting the Tournament of Roses Parade from Pasadena tomorrow.  Just about all of us (and all of America) tune in to see at least part of the most colorful parade held each year, so this is good news.  Why, you might ask?  Because HGTV (formerly Home and Garden Network) is the only network covering it that shows the entire parade without any commercials or other maddening interruptions.  We get to see the ENTIRE parade, every float, marching band, equestrian unit, etc.  HGTV is a cable channel and it will be simulcast on their HD channel, too.

If you watch the parade on one of the several major networks who cover it, you will go crazy with their continual interruptions for commecials and promotions for other shows coming up on their pathetic networks.  And when they're not doing that, then the camera is focused on the narcissistic anchors who babble on about other crap while the band in which your nephew is playing is going by in the background and you never get to see them.  HGTV has been doing this for several years now, and I'm always glad to give them a plug.  And tip you off, too.  Show starts at 8 am Pacific, 11 am Eastern.

Now for a National Hockey League update:  For the third successive day they have dribbled out some positive news from the negotiations.  To recap, we told you that on Thursday the leagues sent over to the union a 300-page proposal and the players reps. spent Friday going over it and gathering questions.  Saturday was spent on telephone conference calls working out the details and yesterday talks continued.  The Associated Press brings us up to date via Spors Illustrated:

There were no formal negotiations Sunday, but all signs pointed to talks on Monday in an effort to end the lockout and save the season.

"There will be no further face-to-face meetings today," the union said in a statement Sunday. "The plan is for the sides to meet tomorrow." Those would be the first negotiations since the sides met with a federal mediator Dec. 13.

The league and the union had informational discussions – by conference call and in meetings – with staff members that lasted much of Saturday and concluded Sunday. Those talks were spurred by the nearly 300-page contract proposal the NHL presented to the union Thursday.

So the NHL is going into the New Year with a hint of progress.  If you need more background on what it is they are haggling about this weekend, read the full article in Sports Illustrated HERE.

Now with this year's final morning lineup finishing up, let's join Nate and Austin who are happy to see the New Year, too.  They are taking equipment check joyfully today, and who can blame them?  Their unique check-list is posted on Firefighter Nation HERE.  So check in again later for more valuable operational tips.

Ok…I'm going to dance on over to the Bunn-O-Matic and get some more New Year's promise coffee started.  See you back in the day room in a little while.

Morning Lineup – January 2

Monday Morning – What Are You Reading?

It seems like this year-end break will never end.  Now we're on still another holiday (New Year's Day Observed the calendar printers call it), so the postal workers and bank tellers stay home one more day.  And frazzled Moms have to wait one more day before school re-opens as used and now-unwanted Christmas trees start to pile up on the curbsides.

If you were taking it easy over the weekend and avoiding the computer, you may have missed our Saturday posting HERE where we told how, why and where you can see today's Tournament of Roses Parade on tv without any commercials or other interruptions.  The parade is always bumped to the next day whenever January 1 falls on a Sunday, so this special treat will be broadcast today starting at 8 am Pacific and 11 am Eastern.

Another heads-up I want to give you this morning is announcing that starting tomorrow we will begin a brief series of  product reviews and informational postings on the Kindle e-readers and related items.  For the past nine months, ebooks have been outselling printed books with the gap growing wider every month.  This is not a fad, but a definitive shift to an entirely different method of information delivery that will affect you whether you want it to or not.  Already some high school districts and colleges are loading textbooks onto e-readers where you can store a complete library in your pocket.  And you can bet your bippy that the next generation of fire and EMS textbooks will be almost solely published digitally as more and more advanced classes are conducted online instead of in classrooms.

So join us as we get you introduced to this amazing gadget along with how they work on Tuesday through Friday.  There are three other major brands of e-readers out there, and perhaps we will get to review those later also.  But the principle is the same and you will find this series informative, I believe.  As a bonus we will spend some time next week reviewing ebooks that have been written by firefighters and EMS providers.

We'd better get started with the equipment check now, so I'll go and get some more coffee started.  Plug in your Kindle charger while we get going and I'll see you back in the day room in a little while.

HGTV Returns to the Rose Parade This Year

The Only Way to Watch the Tournament of Roses Parade

CABLE TELECASTER HGTV WILL BE BROADCASTING the Tournament of Roses Parade from Pasadena, California, again this year.  Regular Firegeezer readers know that the HGTV broadcast has NO commercials or incessant chatter about upcoming shows in the future.  Their expert commentators talk about the parade instead of themselves and you are able to see every float, every marching band, and every equestrian unit in the parade.

In years past, Firegeezer had given up trying to watch the parade on network tv becuase they spent most of their time talking to each other between hundreds of commercials and the viewers never get to see much of the parade at all.  But thanks to HGTV cable channel we can now truly enjoy the parade.

This year, since New Year's Day is on a Sunday, the Tournament of Roses will be held on Monday, January 2.  The parade begins at 8 am Pacific, 11 am Eastern.
