3 Dead, Dozens Injured in Mile-Long Traffic Pileup in Detroit

Casualty Count Still Uncertain

A MAJOR TRAFFIC PILEUP ON I-75 in Detroit, Michigan, Thursday morning left at least three people dead and approximately 30 more injured, some seriously.

AP

The incident happened around 9 am on the busy Interstate when a snow squall popped up and caused an instant whiteout.  As people started hitting their brakes, the slick road surface caused many of them to start skidding and at least three tractor-trailers jacknifed.

AP

A special call for 20 ambulances was placed for mutual aid from the surrounding areas.  At least 12 people have been hospitalized.

Along with the large triage called for, there were as many as 40 vehicles in various levels of damage along with hundreds of car parts scattered along the highway.  The Michigan State Police were able to start clearing some lanes out around noon to get traffic moving when a second whiteout descended over them and set the clearing operations back for a while.  The MSP say that it will now be at least 5 pm before traffic movement is fully restored.

Brain Trauma follow-up

Still not one of us, still recovering

Started following this I-75 motorcycle crash in Ocala, Florida, because the 2002 Suzuki that rocketed into this minivan had an IAFF sticker on the fuel tank.

The helmeted rider was wedged between two people in the second row of seats. The minivan was driving at highway speeds when the motorcycle rammed into the rear.

Working through a Florida forum, corresponded with Robert Kelly’s father-in-law.

Learned that he recently bought the sportbike from a firefighter.

[The 22 year old father of a 1 year old] broke both of his legs, ruptured his bladder, suffered severe head trauma and had multiple cuts and bruises.

[Mom] said his first speech came five weeks after the accident — in fact, just one day after a therapist had told her that he would never talk again because of injuries to his vocal cords.

“He reads, talks and does math,” she said.

Drake said her son does rehab work three hours a day, seven days a week. His rehab is to rebuild his muscles so that he can walk and talk.

Drake said her son knows he was in an accident, but he doesn’t remember it.

The 22 year old night bouncer has no insurance.

Will probably spend all of 2011 at Shands at the University of Florida in Gainesville

He is NOT one of us

Been in contact with the father-in-law of the motorcyclist who rocketed into the rear of a minivan last Thursday on I-75 near Ocala, Florida.

He bought the sportbike from a firefighter a few weeks earlier.

He just got off work and was enroute to meet some buddies at a 24 hour restaurant when he crashed at 2:20 am.

Still in a medically induced coma with severe brain trauma and two broken legs. Married with an infant, the outlook appears uncertain.

Unusual early morning accident on I-75 in Florida last Thursday.

From Austin Miller’s Ocala.com article:

A Suzuki motorcyclist was riding so fast that he rammed into the back of a moving minivan.

He hit the van with such force that his body propelled into the vehicle like a missile.

And his body positioning was so fortunately precise that he shot straight between a husband and wife seated in the back in bucket seats.

A brief image is troubling

Looking at the video related to the Thursday crash.

Noticed something 0:47 seconds into the Ocala.com video that made me uncomfortable.

Is the 22 year old operator of the motorcycle that struck this van one of us?
