Firefighters Enter Into Fire to Shut Down Gas Line

A NATURAL GAS-FED FIRE IN DOWNTOWN MODESTO, California, early Tuesday morning had all the potential of becoming a major incident. The fire was reported at 1 am Pacific and the first-in unit found a growing fire in an alleyway that was being fed by a high-pressure gas line.

While the units were starting primary searches and checking for possible extension, a hose crew was able to press the flames back enough to allow a firefighter to enter the burn zone and shut off the valve.

Division Chief Sean Slamon of the Modesto FD said that the potential was extreme for a few minutes.

The Modesto FD had just wrapped up from a working apartment fire dispatched 3 hours previously.

Explosion Obliterates New Jersey Home

A CLIFTON, NEW JERSEY, HOUSE WAS COMPLETELY destroyed Friday afternoon when a natural gas accumulation inside it was ignited.

Police are saying that the explosion occurred at 2 pm when a private contractor who was working in the front yard hit and broke a gas line.  It is believed that it went unnoticed (or ignored) and the leaking gas followed the pipe into the house where it accumulated until an unknown source sparke it, triggering the devastating explosion.

Nobody was in the house at the time, but five people outside suffered minor injuries from the flying debris.

A 1st-Alarm Response for Porcine Flatulence

A FARMER IN VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA, FELT COMPELLED TO CALL IN a gas leak on Tuesday when a strong odor of natural gas filled his house.  While his home heating is supplied by bottled gas, the extra-high wildfire hazard conditions in Victoria are making everyone a little skittish and less hesitant to call in potential emergencies.

The Axedale Fire Station of the Country Fire Authority (CFA) dispatched two tanker/pumpers and 15 firefighters to the farmhouse which is a 10-minute drive from the station.  When the FF’s arrived, they could not only smell the heavy gas cloud covering the farmstead, but they could also hear the gas leak.  Captain Peter Harkins told reporters:

“(the farmer) was a little bit embarrassed to say the least,” he says.

“It took us a little while to compose ourselves, to speak to him.  When we got there, as we drove up the driveway, there was this huge sow, about a 120-odd kilo (265 lbs.) sow, and it was very obvious where the gas was coming from.  We could not only smell it, but we heard it and it was quite funny.  I don’t know what they were feeding this thing but we certainly heard it.”

“It was fairly obvious what it was and we hosed it down a little bit.  I think we dealt with it fairly professionally and had a bit of a giggle when we got back to the station.”

He added: “She got very excited when two trucks and 15 firies turned up and she squealed and farted and squealed and farted.  I haven’t heard too many pigs fart but I would describe it as very full-on.”

Captain Harkins was interviewed by the Sydney Morning Herald and their conversation is replayed on a video report.  Listen to it HERE and you can hear the reporter cracking up as the captain relates the unusual call.

Spectacular Home Explosion on Cape Cod

AN APPARENT GAS LEAK IN A SANDWICH, MASSACHUSETTS, home early on Thanksgiving Day led to a massive explosion and fire that burned the lone occupant and destroyed the house.

The victim’s sister told reporters that her brother had been complaining about the smell of natural gas ever since a new water heater was installed on Wednesday.  The victim, Joseph Kuzava suffered 2nd-degree burns over his upper torso and was flown to a burn unit in Boston where he is on a respirator.  He is expected to live, however.
