Morning Lineup – January 19

Saturday Morning – Let's Go For a Spin

First I want to send thanks to FossilMedic for keeping the crowd occupied with his Car-Toon while I conducted a well-earned sleep-in this morning.  I really needed that and I plan on staying low-key today.  However we will continue posting stories throughout the day, as usual.

Speaking of the Car-Toon, a lot of folks think that the '54 Corvette was the first production model that was retailed, but it was actually the '53 that hit the streets first, albeit a very small number of them were produced until the calendar dictated moving into the '54 production.  This Geezer can remember all the hoopla and excitement among automotive fans when the '53 was introduced.  Up until that time, the only real sports cars available came from England or (if you really had the sheckels) Italy.  The Corvette really was the first American sports car.  It's first full year of production (the '54 model) was hindered because Chevy only had a 6-cylinder engine available, so the Great American Sports Car was seriously underpowered by sportscar standards.

But that was overcome the next year when the '55 Chevy's came out touting their new V-8 sitting in one of the greatest auto designs ever.  Stylistically speaking, the '55 Chevy is still considered by many, if not most, to be the ultimate in sedan design.  Can you think of any better?

The unmatched '55 Chevy

Ok…I see you've already finished the equipment check, so I'll run some more coffee through the Bunn-O-Matic.  See you back in the day room.  It's Saturday, so watch out for those weekend shoppers out there.

Saturday CarToon: 1953 Corvette Engineering tests

Comments Off

From the General Motors Media Archives

Corvetteblogger.com managed to get our hands on these never-before-seen videos shot during testing of the first generation Corvette. The videos just discovered in the GM Media Archives show a very early Corvette prototype undergoing a series of evaluations at the Milford Proving Grounds and include a cameo by Zora Duntov. Read on to be one of the first people in a very, very long time to view the video.

There are a total of 3 new video clips which CorvetteBlogger.com skillfully combined into 1 below.

The first video shows Zora Duntov himself evaluating airflow over a Corvette’s trunk and rear end. He fidgets with the side vent window angle and watches the airflow change with each adjustment. Zora was initially hired by GM in May of 1953 as an “Assistant Staff Engineer” so this test was probably conducted while he was still relatively new to his position when this film was recorded

The 2nd video shows a test driver piloting an early C1 prototype down a straight stretch of road. Note some of the styling feature that did and didn’t make it into production. He appears to be performing some type of stability or lane change test as he takes his hands off of the steering wheel a couple of times in the film. The Corvette seems to perform remarkably well as we presume that it’s riding on old bias ply tires. Anyone who’s driven on old school tires like these know that they rarely follow a straight path even when you’ve got your hands on the wheel.

The final portion of the clip is broken down into 2 smaller sections. The first shows another (or the same prototype) car from above in a hill climb race against an early 1950′s Chevy sedan. The 2 cars launch simultaneously and the C1 easily drives away cresting the hilltop about 5 seconds ahead of the sedan. Next the car is seen drifting Dukes of Hazzard-style around a corner a dirt test road. You can almost hear Waylon Jennings signing in the background.

A lot has happened in 60 years, the seventh generation wsa revealed last Sunday:

Vehicle assault on government buildings

What will aging Baby Boomers target next?

Officially, the United States Postal Service is calling it a problem with distracted drivers.

Benjamin Preston, of Jalopnik, is expanding on a WWSB ABC7 September 19th article:

PUNTA GORDA, Fla. – The U.S. Postal Service wants to remind drivers to stay alert while driving around Post Offices after a vehicle drove into a Punta Gorda office this week, making it the eighth Post Office in the greater Central Florida area to have a vehicle crash into it this year.

According to the USPS, the top two causes of customers driving through Post Offices are: Stepping on the gas pedal instead of the brake pedal, and accelerating when the vehicle was in drive and the customer thought it was in reverse.

Postal Service urges safe driving near Post Offices

One of the eight 2013 central Florida incidents was this Corvette that was driven by a 72 year old. Picture from the Orlando Sentinel

Preston speculates that it may be due to this demographic:

4 million of the Sunshine State's 15 million drivers are over the age of 60.

Postal Service Begs Floridians To ‘Please Stop Crashing Into Post Offices’

Fellow aging colleagues point out that Florida is just in front of the curve when it comes to Baby Boomer driving.

Baltimore Grand Prix this weekend

The Baltimore Grand Prix will be a spectacular three-day festival of speed in downtown Baltimore, taking place August 31-September 2, 2012.

It will be part of the 2012 IZOD IndyCar Series schedule and the 2012 American Le Mans Series schedule.

The weekend event will feature world-class motorsports competition from several racing series, culminating in Sunday's IZOD IndyCar Series race. In addition to the high-speed thrills of professional racing, a wide variety of entertainment and activities will be scheduled for people of all ages to create an exciting three days of speed and entertainment.

The last American LeMans finish (at Road America):

BadBoyVettes provided the details:

In the closing laps at Road America there were some shenanigans going on that called for investigation after the race. The results were unofficial until now. It appears no one has been charged with a penalty for either incident, and the finishing order in GT stays #55, 45, 01, 4, 48, 3 (Corvettes P4 and P6).

This was the first trip to Le Mans for the rookie driver and he appeared to make the most of the experience. Despite going into a tire barrier during a practice session, Taylor’s driving during the 24 hour race was one of the bright spots of this year’s Le Mans campaign for Corvette Racing.

During the overnight hours, we even watched the 21 year old driver from Central Florida performed a triple stint – not an easy thing to do considering the amount of focus and concentration it takes to drive just one lap of the famous Circuit de la Sarthe at night.

Corvette Stuck In Ocean After Witnesses Report Seeing It Doing ‘Doughnuts’

Comments Off

FossilMedic weeps for a drowned 2009 Hertz Corvette:

From 10news.com:
Beach Joyriders Get Rented Corvette Stuck In Ocean

SAN DIEGO — San Diego police Friday are investigating an incident in Pacific Beach in which someone drove a yellow Corvette onto the beach and left the pricey vehicle stuck in the ocean.

The incident occurred near Crystal Pier around 9:10 p.m. Thursday, San Diego police said.

According to police, witnesses reported seeing the $50,000-car doing “doughnuts” and “spin-outs” on the sand before it became stuck.

When police arrived, the three occupants ran from the scene. Two of the occupants — a husband, 39, and his 36-year-old wife — were detained and sent to detox for public intoxication. Their names were not released because they were not arrested.

Police thought someone might have been trapped in — or under — the car so firefighters and a helicopter were summoned for a possible rescue attempt. Lifeguards also helped in the search.

Police haven’t been able to locate the suspected driver but if they are able to identify him, he may have to pay for the cost of the police, helicopter and fire department response.

Dreaming of a 2013 Stingray

Comments Off

On May 18, GM filed a trademark application for the word STINGRAY with the U. S. Patent and Trademark Office for use on “Motor land vehicles, namely, automobiles.”

Matt Hardigree includes .pdf copies of the application in his September 1 article in JALOPNIK GM Trademarks ‘Stingray’ Name” (HERE)

As pointed out by Keith Cornett in a September 1 post on corvetteblogger.com, GM did the same thing before unveiling the ZR1 supercar.

Cornett added information about the anticipated 2013 model:

With recent comments by the head of GM Design Ed Welburn who said the split window would return on the next-generation C7, as well as GM’s penchant for pulling out historic names for new Corvettes: Z06, Grand Sport, ZR1, it’s easy to see why we are speculating about a C7 Stingray.

MAYBE NOT:

Hardigree received an email from a PR representative:

“It’s not really indicative of any specific naming or branding decisions.” Corvette PR man Dave Caldwell told us via email. “When we did the semi-recent design concept, we discovered that we did not control the Stingray name to the extent we thought we should.”  (HERE)

Regardless, FossilMedic is saving up for the anticipated 2013 model.

Anything close to this would be nice, maybe a high performance hybrid version like Porsche 911 is developing (HERE):

MJ in the Morning host Todd Schnitt is the first customer to exercise the Corvette Engine Build Experience option on his 2011 ZR1.

This is his third ZR1 purchased, Schnitt bought 2009 and 2010 versions of the $110,000 supercar.

Keith Cornett has more in CorvetteBlogger.com, including a more detailed video.

Schnitt describes his reaction to the opportunity:

“To build my own engine is over the top,” said Schnitt. “When my dealer told me about the option it was like ‘Of course, I’ll do it, sign me up!’. I can’t wait to get there and build my own LS9. It will be the ultimate personalization for my car. I’m anticipating it being one of the coolest things I’ve done in my life. It definitely makes my ‘bucket-list.’”

Best time to buy a ZR1

Comments Off

Last week we had three articles on changes in the marketing of the high-end Corvettes, the Z06 and the supercar ZR1.

These changes were to reverse the worst sales year in 40 years, with just 13,934 Corvettes sold in 2009.

Over 500 new ZR1s in inventory

Keith Cornett, writing in CorvetteBlogger, reported on GM rebates for the $118,000 supercharged Corvette.

The rebates for the Corvette ZR1 run through September 7th. You can get either a $3,000 rebate on the purchase of the 2010 Corvette ZR1 or 0% APR for up to 60 months. A $5,000 rebate is being offered on 2009 Corvette ZR1s, but we see there are only 11 09′ Corvette ZR1s available.

The Corvette ZR1 also qualifies for the $1,000 Toyota Conquest rebate which can be combined with the $3,000/$5,000 rebate. However, you lose that money if you take the 0% APR financing.

The graphic in the story shows the situation:

Even with the rebates, it is still a six-figure purchase. Gotta sell a lot of Firegeezer mugs to make the monthly note!

So it is NOT a sign of economic recovery, but an effort to increase sales!

Rick Kranz, a product editor for Automotive News, applauded this week’s effort by Chevrolet.

Provides a realistic perspective in yesterday’s article.

From GM’s bid to boost Corvette sales is on target

Chevrolet is desperately trying to create buzz for the brand. Sales have nose-dived.

Sales last year dropped to 13,934 Corvettes. You have to go way back to 1961 to find a worse year for Corvette sales. And the prognosis for this year looks no better:

Sales for January through June were off 15 percent from last year’s snail pace. As recently as 2007, 33,685 Vettes were sold, according to the Automotive News Data Center.

Don’t blame the car for the sales slide. This is the best Corvette ever produced! Instead, blame the recession: Much of its buyer base is either out of work or cautiously selecting their purchases.

The buyer base are baby boomers in their mid-fifties.

Don Yenko racing a '61 Vette at Virginia International Raceway in 1962

ITS THE MEDIA, STUPID

Kranz also describes the marketing campaign impact:

This week’s engine announcement generated the buzz Chevy wanted on the Internet and on TV.

The Web sites for CNN, CBS, MSNBC, Automotive News, Advertising Age and others delivered stories.

Including me. Pity that there was no payolla.

I would have LOVED visiting the Performance Build Center or a brief drive in a ZR1.

Edited to add:
The “BP” in the 1962 picture means Yenko’s Vette was competing in the Sports Car Club of America B Production class. Same class that the Shelby Mustang GT 350 competed in.

Yenko was the 1962 and 1963 B Production SCCA national champion. (list)

Another sign of economic recovery?

After a five-year hiatus, a Corvette commercial.
First played on ESPN last night.

Created by GM’s new advertising agency, San Francisco based  Goodby, Silverstein and Partners, the 45 second ad was linked to the Engine Build Experience we covered on Monday.

Goodby, Silverstein and Partners were creators of the “got milk?” and Budweiser frog ads.

I guess some of that $5,800 to have the Engine Build Experience covers the cost of the advertising,

Corvette Engine Build Experience

Sign of a recovering economy?

From Automotive News:

GM is offering buyers of the 2011 Corvette ZR1 and Z06 models the chance to build the engine for their cars. A Corvette buyer is welcome to GM’s Performance Build Center in Wixom, Mich., where engines for the ZR1 and the Z06 are built by hand.

Read more HERE

Corvette Engine Build Experience (PBC $5,800 plus travel to Detroit)

The buyer is assigned a personal concierge who schedules the engine build and coordinates logistics of the trip. Once at Wixom, the buyer gets to personally assemble the engine — “under the supervision of and support from skilled technicians,” GM clarifies, noting that hand assembly procedures in place at the Performance Build Center make this possible. A personalized engine nameplate is created that gets added to the car.

But wait, there is more!

National Corvette Museum Delivery (R8C $490 plus travel to Nashville)

From the National Corvette Museum website:

The customer arrives at the NCM and is welcomed with signs commemorating the event. They are taken to the Corvette Assembly Plant for their own NCM Delivery Team guided VIP tour (when available).

A personal, special VIP guided tour of the NCM is conducted where they will see their Corvette on display. The event is available on a live webcast.

Next, a member of the NCM Delivery Team provides a quality orientation followed by a thorough delivery presentation of their new vehicle. A unique gold decal is placed on the inside of the drivers door jamb to signify the importance of this memorable occasion.

Corvette Buyers Tour ($400 plus travel to Kentucky)

Also from our friends at the National Corvette Museum:

We are excited to be able to offer the Corvette Buyer’s Plant Tour in conjunction with the Bowling Green Corvette Assembly Plant! This program is offered to provide new Corvette buyer’s with a tour of the Assembly Plant. See and experience the assembly of America ’s Sports Car with your very own personal tour guide.

You and 1 guest can enjoy a private tour of the Plant to see many areas not included on the general Plant tour. Your tour guide will provide information at the paint areas, body start area, installation of seats, doors, trunk, steering wheel, airbags, engine, etc. in addition to the general tour stops such as the marriage point, first start, end of line, and dyno and water testing.

We make every effort to schedule your tour on the day that your car is being built. However, we cannot guarantee that you will see your car at any point in the production process due to unforeseen events that may increase or decrease production time and scheduling.

Corvette Photo Album ($500)

Don’t worry, even if you did NOT see YOUR Corvette assembled on the Buyers Tour, you can get the construction memorialized in a twenty page photo album.

Those enthusiasts at the National Corvette Museum think of everything!

Each leather bound album is created with the highest quality photo paper preserved in a padded leather album with high quality stitching detail and includes:

* 20 plus pages of text and photos devoted to capture your Corvette’s build process
* Letter of authenticity
* Letter from the GM Bowling Green Assembly Plant Manager and the National Corvette Museum’s Executive Director
* Back page autograph area for memorable moments/events.

After paying $85,200 for a Corvette Z06 3LZ I can add $7190 to enhance my purchasing experience.

Still cheaper than the $13,500 it cost to add racing stripes, subwoofer and alloy wheels on a $165,000 Ford GT in 2006.

2010 Chevrolet Corvette 2-door Coupe Z06 w/2LZ

Not that I can afford either “mid life crisis” toy.

Years ago I went to the National Corvette Museum and took the public tour of the Bowling Green factory.

For a gearhead it was a great day. The folks at both the museum and the factory were great.

Doubt that I would spend the $5800 to “build” my own engine, but I can see the appeal to true believers.

A DECADE AGO I TURNED IN MY KEYS

I was passed over for a battalion chief promotion days before an eligible list expired.

Ranked almost at the top, there was just one other promotion made in the two year life of the list.

It was more than a missed opportunity, the promotion was for my staff job. Agreed to fill-in as a section boss during a department reorganization. What was to take a couple of months became a year-and-a-half.

Took the next BC exam a couple of weeks later. Scored lower, out of the promotable range for the next two years.

Angry and frustrated, I asked the retirement board to calculate the earliest possible date. My estimate was twenty months.

Was shocked to learn that I could retire in a few months.  Time as a fire cadet and a ton of accumulated sick leave made the difference. I retired with 25 years and 15 days of uniformed service.

Retiree Remorse?

A colleague who started the same year I did ran the recruitment section.  At every fire/ems conference he explained the benefits added since I retired. They kept accumulating.

A second longevity step in the salary scale, an increase in the multiplier used to calculate annuity, pay raises and a DROP program.

He retired six years later at the same rank I had but with a much more generous payout.

That bast!d :)

While I miss the action and the day-to-day "family" dramas, the only time I regretted retiring was one Tuesday morning.

Smoke was rising from the Pentagon on a terrible and brilliant blue-sky day.

THE ACADEMIC ROOKIE

Despite 16 years as a part-time community college instructor I was not prepared for full time academic life.

The first jump into a private university was awful. Floundered as I figured out what was important and what was trivial.  The job I agreed to do was not the tasks that consumed the work week. Within months I was looking for another job.

Went back to the community college. Found comfort with written guidelines, boundaries and expectations that make up state employment. With comfort came a dramatically lower salary, less pay than the rookie firefighter/paramedic taking classes from me.

Not that it was perfect. Needed to petition the Provost to get my State and Local Government graduate degree accepted for promotion to assistant professor.

Had to show that, at that time, there was just one university with a "Fire Science" graduate degree in the United States. Example of a state guideline too closely followed.

Back to the varsity squad

I continued to teach part-time at the university. Learned more about how the place worked. With eyes wide open, I rejoined the university.

The program has a complex organizational structure. An academic boss, who makes the hiring decisions, is from one school. The dean is from another school and controls the budget.

As a program director, I feel like a child of divorce where both parents are successful in distinctly different careers. They have strong views on what the child should do.

Almost like running a fire-based EMS program.

FIFTH YEAR FRANKNESS

The fifth year annual faculty review requires closer scrutiny.  It is a milestone point in university employment.

I am getting a new "parent" this month, so the senior parent is more critical than in earlier reviews. Addressing long-standing issues, assumptions and the unique organizational structure.

Lovely.

Decisions made years ago by people long gone are now "my" problem.

Frustrated as I try to explain what we do and why we do this.  Or why we cannot do that.

It seems as if the years invested in learning how to work around a complex system are unappreciated and minimized.

Maybe I am too much of a fossil for this organizational warfare. Second retirement?

55 IS JUST A NUMBER

While it is just a number, it holds power.

As an official fossil I can buy into an "active adult" community.

Within the demographic of new Corvette owners.

The number of pounds I need to lose.
