Early-Morning Fire Routs Five Families
UPDATE: The bodies of the two children were recovered Tuesday afternoon. They were located on the third floor after it had been made safe enough to be entered.
TWO CHILDREDN ARE MISSING IN A FIRE in Putnam, Connecticut, this morning (Tuesday). The fire in a multi-family dwelling was dispatched at 12:40 am and has destroyed the home to five families and left four other people injured.

When crews arrived, there was heavy fire on the south side of the building and flames venting through several upper-story windows, Putnam Fire Marshal Norm Perron said.
"The fire seems to have originated on the third floor and then burned through to the second floor," he said.

Because of the missing victims and potential for more, the fire chief held off marking the incident under control until 5:30 am.
