They Use Electricity, Don’t They?

A CRAZED MAN IN PERTH, AUSTRALIA, WAS BURNED Sunday while his clothes were splashed with gasoline and a police officer struck him with a Taser gun.  The electric charge ignited the fumes and set his clothes on fire, giving him severe burns over 20% of his body.

The police were called to a house because of a “disturbance” and found the man wandering around inside carrying a gas can and sloshing the fuel around the house.  When he said that he was going into the kitchen to get some matches, officers broke in the back door to try an apprehend the man.  He in turn started pitching gasoline at the police, dousing one of them.  At that point, an officer fired his Taser and ignited the man.

He is in stable condition with burns on his arms and upper body.

The accident happened around 4 am Wednesday morning when the Germantown resident pulled into the fueling area and, after visiting the inside of the store, began pumping gasoline into a portable container.  Before anybody saw what was happening, the entire car and the man were on fire.  A sheriff’s deputy was just a block away at the time and was the first on the scene.  He found the victim on fire and laying in a nearby parking area.

State Police say that he has 2nd- and 3rd-degree burns over 100% of his body following the blaze.  When the FD arrived the fire was extending to the superstructure of the pump area.  The State Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the fire that led to $200,000 in damages to the store.

FIVE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS WERE BURNED THIS MORNING (Tuesday) when they failed to follow directions in a chemistry lab experiment.  The Orlando Sentinel reports that the Seminole County, Florida, students at Hagerty High School were conducting a demonstration on rocket propulsion principles when the accident happened.

WESH-TV Ch.2 filed this video report shortly after noon:

Despite the hype, it was not an explosion.  From the Sentinel:

The students were “slightly singed,” according to Principal Sam Momary, who described the injuries as looking like a “slight sunburn.”

Momary said students were conducting a common experiment demonstrating that ignited gases in a closed container will propel the container. The experiment was keyed to the planned Ares I-X rocket launch at Cape Canaveral today, which since has been postponed.

The experiment involves putting a small amount of ethanol in a bottle lying on its side on a table and then holding a match to the opening. The gas ignites and the bottle shoots a few inches on the table.

Momary said the student who lit the gases was not injured. But five others were standing behind the opening, although they had been told to stand to the side. Gases shot out a few feet and burned them, he said.

A BURRILLVILLE, RHODE ISLAND, MAN IS HOSPITALIZED this morning following and explosion and fire in the kitchen of his duplex home.

Neighbors in the usually-quiet area said they heard two large “booms” and when they looked outside they saw smoke pouring from the windows of both apartments in the building.

WPRI-TV Ch. 12 reports on this video:

The video report repeats the earlier police declaration that bomb-making materials were found inside the home.  But neighbors who know the occupant are saying that he was a model rocket hobbyist and was often working with his rocket motors and models.  One person told the Providence Journal:

“A model rocket blew up in his face,” she said, citing the explanation she got from the victim as he was helped out of the house. “He said it blew up on the kitchen table.”

Laroque and other neighbors said the injured man, who they identified as Ronald Paquin, has an interest in toy rockets and is often working with them.

The victim is in Rhode Island Hospital and reportedly being treated for 2nd- and 3rd-degree burns to his arms and hands.  Witnesses also said that his face was covered with soot and he couldn’t see when he was taken away by ambulance.  The fire was contained to the downstairs kitchen and was quickly extinguished by the Nasonville FD.
