Cider Mill Barn Fire “Suspicious”

Vacant Property Might Be Criminal Hideout

WATERLOO, ONTARIO, FIRE UNITS were called out early Tuesday morning to the former Hergott Cider Mill for a spectacular barn fire that required a tanker shuttle.

The vacant farm which is now owned by the City of Waterloo has no utilities hooked up which causes the police to classify it as "suspicious origin."

When the FD arrived on the scene shortly after midnight, the barn was already fully involved and the fire attack was immediately centered on containment and protecting the other buildings on the property.

While there is no immediate concern that there is a victim somewhere in the rubble, it will be looked at carfully today as the investigators paw through the debris.  Very recently there has been a wide police manhunt for a 20-yr.-old violent criminal, Michael Fortune, who could have been using the barn as a hideout and accidentally started the fire.  CTV News adds:

"Understandably with the amount of interest that that case has had, it was in the minds of the officers who responded last evening" says Waterloo Regional Police spokesman Olaf Heinzel.

What’s left is still hot and smouldering and according to fire fighters too unstable for any one to get inside. As a result investigators brought in a heavy machine to pick apart the rubble.

Waterloo Fire prevention officer, John Percy says "What I can tell you is Waterloo Regional police did respond initially. They do not have any concerns at this time and neither do we that there are any humans in the area or in the fire at its point."

Photo Crew First-In On Pennsylvania Commercial Barn Fire

Respnse Time Cut to Zero for 911 Photographers

Firegeezer notes:  Professional photographer Steve Roth and his associate were traveling Sunday morning when they spotted a working fire in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.  Steve's narrative provides the basis for the story we bring you here.

Shortly after noon on Sunday, 911 Photography's owner/photographer Steve Roth, staff photographer Bryan Felix and their families were returning from New York when smoke was spotted coming from a barn along Interstate 81. Steve placed a phone call to the Dauphin County 911 Center to report a working barn fire off route 81, at the Bow Creek Road exit.

While Bryan guided the car up off the interstate,Steve was informing the 911 center they had an approximately 50 x 75 unoccupied barn full of antiques with heavy smoke pushing from the gable end of the roof and fire throughout the first floor of the place of business.

Prior to any fire department arrival, a call was made to the 911 center suggesting to incoming companies they not bring a lot of apparatus downt he lane and to drop a supply line from the hard road as space was limited down the lane and the radiant heat was extreme. Just prior to the arrival of the first-in engine company, the structure vented itself from the gable end as well as throughout the roof area.

East Hanover Township engine 39 arrived first, and laid a five-inch supply line from Bow Creek Road down the single gravel lane, with West Hanover Township Engine 36 second due arriving, and going around to the front of the barn. Water supply was established on the hard road with portable tanks set up and a tanker shuttle was established from distant hydrants.

A truck company from Palmyra eventually made its way down the lane, set up and began flowing water from the ladder pipe.

Twenty fire companies from Dauphin, Cumberland, Lebanon, and Lancaster Counties responded to the fire with several still on the scene at 10 pm working the hot spots and mopping up.

The barn and contents were a total loss but the amount of damage is not yet known.  The owner was in or around the property when the fire started.  A State Police fire marshal will be on the scene today (Monday) to investigate the cause.

Firefighter Arrested for August Arson

Another "bored" firefighter

A CEDAR GROVE (Wisconsin) FIRE DEPARTMENT volunteer firefighter was arrested Monday and charged Wednesday with setting  barn on fire August 9.  The blaze destroyed the barn and an outbuilding and left hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage.  Besides losing his building, the farmer also lost a lot of farming equipment and tractors, most of which is uninsured.

Sean Bradley

Sheboygan County investigators say that Sean Bradley, 26, got into a car and brought along a container of charcoal lighting fluid, then drove around looking for a place to start a fire.  When asked why he wanted to do that, he said he was bored and wanted some activity.  After first making sure there was no livestock inside, he poured the lighter fluid on the floor and set it afire.  He claims that he immediately had a change of heart and tried to put the fire out with his coat.  Thinking it was extinguished, he left and while driving away he tossed the lighter can out the car window.

The fire was not extinguished, though, and the barn burned down.  During the investigation of the fire, the discarded lighter fluid can was found.

The case was cracked when the investigators were able to track the container back to Bradley.

Double Barn Burner in New Hampshire

Several Vehicles and Many Chickens Lost

AN EARLY-MORNING FIRE ON WEDNESDAY destroyed two barns that were described as "hundreds of years old' along with their contents in North Hampton, New Hampshire.  The barns were only a few feet from the house and the heat from the fire was beginning to melt siding and crack window panes when the fire department arrived.

WMUR-TV

The fire station is just 7 miles away, yet when they arrived the barns were already beyond saving.  The responding departments set up a water supply and concentrated on successfully preventing the exposure from burning.  They had the fire knocked down in about an hour.  One of the barns held 5 motorcycles, a boat, and several cars including a Model A truck and an old Jeep.

The other barn was used by a tenant who raised chickens and kept them inside.  He used warming lamps to keep the chickens warm and there is a possibility that was the cause of the fire.

Hot-Air Balloon Business Burned Out

Comments Off

A DERRY, NEW HAMPSHIRE, HOT-AIR BALLOON ride business was destroyed in a fire Sunday.  The owner of the A & a Balloon Rides concession was filling a propane tank outside near his van when something sparked and caused a fire to start.  It rapidly spread to the balloon passenger basket and then extended into a large 40-ft. by 60-ft. barn where he stored his four balloons and all the other equipment as well as an antique automobile.

Photo by Paul McCallum taken just as the first units
arrived.  Van at right was where the fire started before
it was pulled forward to the location shown here.

When the Derry FD arrived on the scene the barn was already well-involved and the homestead is in a non-hydrant area.

WMUR-TV describes the event:

Fire investigators said the owner was inside the basket when it caught fire. They said he jumped out, pushed it off this van and then drove the vehicle a few feet away, but the fire soon spread to the barn where hot air balloons and antique cars were stored, along with tools for a drywall business.

The many propane tanks used for the balloons created a big challenge for the firefighters, and there were many explosions.  ”Parts of the building went easily 50 to 100 feet in the air. One explosion lifted a pick up truck that was fully involved 3 to 5 feet into the air,” (Derry FD Battalian Chief) Webb said.

Despite the initial water supply problem, the FD was able to protect and save the family home that was just 60 ft. away from the barn and had started smoking on the exterior.  Witnesses reported hearing as many as a dozen “explosions” as the propane tanks stored inside the barn vented.

Paul McCallum, Derry FD photo

The alarm was sent just before noon on Sunday and when the units arrived they immediately called for assistance including more tankers.  Altogether 15 fire departments and foresty units responded to the scene.  A tanker relay was quickly set up and containment tactics were applied.

WCVB-TV Ch. 5 filed this video report from the scene:

The fire was extinguished and all units had left the scene by 2:40 pm.

Costly Quail Fire

Comments Off

SHAWANO COUNTY, WISCONSIN, FIREFIGHTERS battled the winter elements before they could get to a remote farmer’s barn that was burning early Friday morning.  With the recent blizzard leaving local roads iced up, it took a long time for them to get their engines to the barn which contained 1,200 quail.

All of the birds perished, along with an alpaca, as the barn was a total loss.

WLUK-TV has some  raw video of the fire:
