Warehouse Fire Keeping Atlanta FD Busy

Comments Off

Expected To Be On Scene All Day

A FIRE IN A MAKE-SHIFT WAREHOUSE IN ATLANTA, Georgia, will have units from the Atlanta Fire Department occupied most of today (Monday).

WGCL-TV

The fire was first discovered Sunday evening just before 5 pm in what a battalion chief described as an "extremely large warehouse being used for storage of a lot of recyclable products."  The building which was originally home to a mop factory was most recently used as a recycling center, but a major fire two years ago, in March 2011, damaged it beyond repair and since then has been used as a storage facility for piles of paper, plastics, and other combustible products.

WSB-TV Ch. 2 has some good fire footage in this video report:

The fire was largely knocked down in about two hours, but there are many hot spots and small fires remaining.  The precariousness of the roof is preventing any interior operations, so the remaining units expect to be there all day wetting the imbedded fires from the outside.

Wild Ambulance Ride in Atlanta

One Man Now in a Heap o' Trouble

EARLY SATURDAY MORNING AN OFF-DUTY Atlanta, Georgia, police officer found an unconscious (intoxicated) man in the Buckhead nightclub district of the city.  He called for an ambulance and a Grady EMS unit was dispatched.  The two medics put the man on a cot and placed him in the back of the ambulance where they both began treating him.

While they were treating him, a friend of the drunk's hopped into the cab and drove off with the medics in the back.  Police were called for.  The driver-for-a-day careened around town and ran over a pedestrian while making a turn.  Finally, the medic crew convinced the misguided man to pull over and stop.  When he did he was immediately taken into custody by a Georgia State Patrol officer.

Jordan Moore

The perp, Jordan Scott Moore, 26 went directly to jail without passing Go where he was charged with three counts of kidnapping, inerference with government property, theft by taking, hit and run, reckless driving, and failure to render aid.

The pedestrian was taken to the hospital where he remains in stable condition.

Atlanta FD Recalling Counterfeit Smoke Detectors

FD Handed Out More Than 18,000

ATLANTA, GEORGIA, FIRE CHIEF Kelvin Cochran is scheduled to hold a press conference at 10 am this morning to announce the recall of 18,507 photoelectric smoke detectors that the FD handed out to low-income families in 2005 and 2006.

It was recently discovered, following an investigation by tv station WGCL-TV that the detectors had counterfeit UL labels on them and were so poorly constructed that most of them would probably fail to activate properly.  The FBI has entered the investigation and it was also learned by the tv station that the man and wife team that sold the detectors, Bob and Judy Silver have served time in prison previously for selling counterfeit smoke detectors to the federal government.

3-Bagger Working in Atlanta

Updated, 11 am:  Scroll down.

A MAJOR FIRE BROKE OUT AT 5 AM this morning (Tuesday) in Atlanta, Georgia.  The blaze is concentrated on the top floor of a 7-story building that has commercial occupancies on the ground floor and apartments on the upper floors.  Atlanta FD has brought in mutual aid from DeKalb and Fulton Counties.

Journal-Constitution

The incident is still working and no further information has been released.

Update, 11 am:
The fire was confined to the roof area where it had started on an outdoor deck.  The Journal-Constitution updates:

Atlanta fire Battalion Chief David Rhodes said that while the blaze was “impressive-looking on arrival,” firefighters quickly had the flames knocked down.  “It looked like it was gone,” he said. “You think it’s worse than it is until you get up there.”

Rhodes told the AJC late Tuesday morning that the fire started on an outdoor deck on the roof of the building.  “It looks like there was an issue  with a hard-mounted grill with a gas line running to it,” he said. “The deck completely burned off the roof.”

Rhodes said there was water damage, “on just about every floor, but most of the water damage is on [floors] six and five. Three or four units on each floor with a little bit of damage.”

Kids + Chemicals = Ka-Boom

TWO GEORGIA TECH STUDENTS ARE IN CRITICAL CONDITION today after a chemical experiment went awry and blew up, severely burning both of them.  The two students identified as Tommy Keen, 20, an aerospace engineering sophomore, and Paul Grzybowski, 21, a materials science junior, were found on the outside patio behind their Zeta Beta Tau fraternity house.

Atlanta Journal-Constitution

They had reportedly been mixing aluminum powder and rust powder in an attempt to create a fireworks-type of reaction.  Instead, they generated a violent thermite explosion that left them with 2nd-degree burns over their faces, arms, and chests.

The Associated Press provided this video report from the scene:

Tom Grzybowski, Paul’s father told WGCL-TV, “They’ve got a couple of tubes down their throats for a few days, and they’re going to need a couple of skin grafts,”

Fifteen other people were inside the frat house when the explosion occurred and they all escaped safely.  The first-arriving units found them all standing outside shortly after midnight.

….. One of America’s most-deadly hotel fires occurred in Atlanta, Georgia.  The Winecoff Hotel, a supposedly “fireproof building,” had an early morning fire that killed 119 people.

Two years ago on this anniversary date, Dave Statter published a good historic review of the fire and an interesting side-note to the occasion that happened just two days before his posting in STATter911.
