Morning Lineup – December 21

On Sunday we were commenting (HERE) about clusters-of-three when it comes to celebrity deaths.  Last Wednesday saw the passing of two favorites of all Americans, Blake Edwards and Bob Feller, and I was wondering when the third sad announcement would be coming.  It turns out that yesterday (Monday) was the date.

It was announced Monday that actor and comedian Steve Landesberg, 65, passed away earlier that day from cancer in Los Angeles.  Mr. Landesberg had a successful career in television and movies playing comedic roles, as well as personal appearances in stand-up comedy acts.  He is best known to most of us for his part as Detective Arthur Dietrich in the popular tv comedy series Barney Miller.

Landesberg had only a couple of appearances in the first two seasons playing the role of a priest.  But in the third season he was re-introduced as a police officer and promoted to detective where he played through the end of the show’s 7-year run.  He came into show business in good company, as  Variety reports:

The New York native was discovered at a at an open audition conducted by Bill Cosby for NBC’s “The Tonight Show” at Gotham’s Bitter End. That led to gigs at the Improv alongside tyros like David Brenner, Jimmie Walker and Bette Midler and membership in improv group New York Stickball Team.

In 1972 he was featured in NBC’s “Dean Martin Presents the Bobby Darin Amusement Company” and made his film debut in 1973 pic “Blade.”  He (also) did voiceover work in toons like “American Dad” and appeared in regional stage in “Same Time Next Year,” “God’s Favorite” and “Hold Me.”

He has also earned a smidgeon if immortality by being credited with the quote “Honesty is the best policy, but insanity is a better defense,” according to WorldofQuotes.com.  Thanks for the good times, Steve.

Are you pressed for a last-minute Christmas gift but don’t know what to get, or how to get it delivered in time?  I just learned yesterday that Amazon.com has gift cards that you can order and if you buy one that is worth $50 or more, then you get free, next-day delivery.  This one’s a life-saver for me.  If you want to check it out, CLICK HERE  to read about and order one today.

Something else that has to be done today is getting this equipment checked out.  So let’s get started on that and I’ll go make some more coffee.

We had fun last Wednesday running the classic tv episode from WKRP in Cincinnati about the radio station’s Thanksgiving Day promotion.  “Turkeys Away” will remain in the tv history books as one of the all-time favorites.  If you missed that posting, you can CLICK HERE to view it.

Unfortunately, our friends in Canada and elsewhere around the world are unable to watch the downloads from Hulu, but we have some good news for all of you.  After a long, long wait, WKRP is being released on dvd.  For the past few years it was available on the “gray market” over the internet, but some people are either reluctant or not aware of this type of purchase.  Plus they usually require you buy the entire series, albeit not all that expensive.

Even though the demand was always there for the dvd release, I believe they had some difficulties with royalty clearances for some of the music.  The program is about a rock music radio station and there were scores of sound tracks that had to be negotiated through the music clearing house.  But all that is straightened out now and the first season of the series has been available for a few months.  Amazon.com sells their dvd’s in almost every country in the civilized world now and you can get it through them.  Here in the U. S. they are currently selling it at an 18% markdown:

It looks like Season Two will be released before too long, because Amazon is accepting pre-orders for it.  However, they don’t have a release date posted yet.  But we’re in luck because the famed “Turkeys Away” episode was part of the first season.  Time to start thinking about gift-giving, even if it’s for yourself.

Now let’s start thinking about equipment check…time to get that taken care of while I go start the coffee.  See you back in the day room.

Morning Lineup – November 24

Sometime later today I will be embarking on a new digital adventure.  On Sunday I ordered one of those all-in-one printer, scanner, copier machines from Amazon.com and according to FedEx it will be delivered sometime today.  Currently I have separate machines to do all that stuff, but each of them are getting some age on them and altogether they take up a lot of space compared to what today’s equipment does.

This is especially true for my copier.  It’s an HP OfficeJet R40 that is ten years old and as big as Zsa Zsa Gabor’s makeup kit.  But it has been a terrific workhorse all this time and is still doing its job.  And my flatbed scanner is satisfactory, but those things are kind of cheap and need replacing every few years.  I think the current one is my third, so far.

Anyway, I got interested a few weeks ago in an all-in-one from Epson that not only seems to be a good machine, but it is Wi-Fi equipped also.  It is called the Artisan 810 and it’s been out just long enough to where they are knocking the price down.  It’s MSRP is $300, but Amazon is offering it for $200 and considering what all you’re getting, that is a good price.  Using the modern miracle of internet search engines, I read several reviews on it along with numerous customer responses and it comes very well recommended.  And the footprint for the device is only 18 in. by 18 in.

But the trade reviews really convinced me to give it a try.  I’ve never had an Epson copier before, but the people who print photographs for a living rank it equally with Canon for print and color quality.  All four functions (it has a fax function, too) got good reviews, so I am comfortable with that.  Now I am anticipating this new experience of having a copier and scanner that will operate wirelessly.  Not only could I be anywhere in the house and print something using my laptop, but it eliminates one more cord.  In fact it is replacing several connecting cords and reducing the number of power cords from three to one.

One more thing that I like about the Epson is that, like Canon does, it has dedicated color ink cartridges so you only need to replace whatever color you are low on.  So we’ll see how it goes.  If I don’t get bogged down with other obligations, I should have it running sometime tomorrow.  I’ll let you know.

For now though, we need to get the equipment check routine running and get ready for the day.  I’m going to make sure there’s plenty of coffee and we’ll meet later in the day room.
