Mystery Blast Ignites Canadian Sawmill

Major Loss

A LARGE SAWMILL FACILITY IN BRITISH COLUMBIA suffered a severe loss overnight after an explosion rocked the plant and started a major fire that has destroyed three production buildings.

CBC-TV

The Lakeland Mills is a major employer in Prince George, B. C., providing occupation for 250 people.  There were about 50 people on the job Monday night at 9:45 pm Pacific when the thunderous explosion shook the entire town and immediately lit up the sky with flames 90+ feet high.

The Canadian Press reports:

Brian Croy, first vice-president of the United Steelworkers Local 1-424, was with six people in the mill's lunchroom when the explosion hit. "I don't know where it came from, but it was almost like a cannon going off," he told The Canadian Press.

The blast knocked down the lunchroom's plywood walls, forcing Croy and his coworkers to escape through a hole created in an outside wall.

Though the mill's lights stayed on, Croy said plumes of black smoke made it difficult to move and breathe. Miniature explosions could be heard as Croy and his colleagues got out through the hole. "It's almost like you were coming out of the war zone. Everything was levelled," he said.

All 50 employees have been accounted for, but about 25 were injured, some very seriously, and had to be transported by ambulance and air to several hospitals.  Witness reports say that one man had fingers missing and many others were so badly burned that skin was hanging off their arms.  They were all taken quickly to an on-site first aid station where primary care was given while awaiting the ambulances.

Canadian Press

The Prince George Fire Department had no choice but to try and contain the fire which destroyed the sawmill building, the log processing facility and the sorting facility.  Spared were the planing mill and the "hot oil energy" building where the lumber is dried.  Lakeland's primary product is premier-grade kiln dried studs.

The fire is still under a controlled burn this morning (Tuesday) and the FD expects to be occupied on the scene through Wednesday.  The incident is still working and investigators are just now arriving to begin searching for the cause of the disaster.

The Brandon Sun adds:

WorkSafe BC is investigating the cause, but the mill was flattened and 250 people were thrown out of work.

Prospects of rebuilding the mill seem dim. The mill's owner, Oregon-based Hampton Affiliates, has said it can't rebuild without a guaranteed timber supply, but there is a shortage of useable timber in the area.

Fashion-Challenged Teen Head-Butts Mom Before Burning Her House Down

Home Destroyed Over Broken Cell Phone

A TAMPA, FLORIDA, TEEN (who is 6-ft. tall and weighs 275 lbs.) got into an argument with his mother Saturday over a cell phone that he claimed she had broken.  In a rage, he grabbed her by the wrists and head-butted her on her forehead twice.  She managed to run out of the house and drove away in her car before reporting the assault to the police.  Shortly after, the officers arrived and arrested Aldwin Chyrstian Caceres, 18, charging him with domestic violence.

After posting bail early Sunday, he returned home and found his mother was not there.  A witness told the police that he saw Caceres pour gasoline on his mother's bed and two couches in the living room before lighting them on fire.  The resulting blaze gutted the modest home and the cops went looking for him once again.

WTVT Ch. 13 filed this video report:

According to the police, Caceres admitted to setting the fire before he was charged with 1st-degree arson and placed in jail without bond.  "He's going to get help, too, because he is sick. Something is wrong with him, but I don't know what," his mother told BayNews9.

Luckily No Fatalities

UPDATE:  A citizen videographer caught the explosion – Scroll down

A COACHELLA, CALIFORNIA, MAN LEARNED AN EXPENSIVE LESSON on LPG tanks Saturday afternoon at 1:45 Pacific when his pickup truck blew up while waiting in a McDonald's drive-thru window line.

KESQ-TV / Jimenez

The man was driving around in 100-degree heat and the desert sun beating on two propane tanks, one 5-gal. tank and a 50-gal. tank, that he was carrying in his truck bed.  While waiting in line at the drive-thru, he heard a hissing sound coming from the tanks.  He got out of his truck and thought that the valve on the smaller tank had loosened open, so he tried to tighten it.  At that moment the leaking vapors ignitied explosively, setting the truck on fire.

As everybody in the area fled the scene and the restaurant was being evacuated, the smaller tank exploded sending debris and truck parts in all directions including the tailgate into another vehicle.  The large 50-gallon tank was propelled 75 ft. away but miraculously survived the blast and didn't fail.  Two young boys riding in the pickup cab were grabbed and carried away by passers-by before the explosion.

A CalFire spokesman explained that the excessive heat had caused the gas to expand and the pressure relief valve opened causing the sound that the driver mistook for an open valve.  When he slid out of the driver's seat he generated a static charge and as he grabbed the valve he sparked the leaking vapors.  The explosive-ignition set the truck on fire and burned the man's hands.

UPDATE 11:30 am:
A citizen videographer caught the moment of the explosion in this video:

KESQ-TV Ch. 13 has more photos included in this video report:

The Palm Springs Desert Sun reported:

Someone at the scene took the man and his family to a local hospital before firefighters arrived …. Their lives are not in danger, according to the sheriff's department.

Indio police evacuated the restaurant while firefighters put out the fire, which was contained at 2:01 p.m.

There were no injuries among restaurant employees or customers, according to CalFire.

The fire destroyed the drive-through structure, but damage to the restaurant was minmal and they were back to flipping burgers later that afternoon.

Lighter-Loving Kiddies Catching the Blame

THREE TRIPLE-DECKERS IN LOWELL, MASSACHUSETTS, were destroyed in a late-aftenoon fire Friday that went undiscovered until it was spotted by a passing ambulance crew.  When the first fire units arrived on the scene, the three multi-family dwellings were already well involved.  Extra alarms were dispatched to contain and control the fire successfully, but more than 40 people were left homeless.

WHDH-TV

The fire authorities say that the fire started around 3:30 pm on the outside of one of the homes when a group of young children were playing with a propane lighter and accidentally set the siding of one of the homes ablaze.  The fire spread into the walls and up to the attics and from building to building without anyone inside aware of what was going on.

The medics on the passing ambulance told WHDH-TV:

"I noticed the roof was heavy smoke showing and fire alarms hadn’t even gone off yet, so we just went into the house. My partner banged on some doors, I banged on some doors. Got everybody out, made sure they were all accounted for," said Gregory Worsman, a paramedic.

Alert Neighbors Initiate Evacuation

A 2-STORY APARTMENT BUILDING IN DALLAS, TEXAS, was burned out early Thursday morning, but all the residents were able to escape safely.

KDFW-TV

The fire began shortly before midnight, but fortunately some neighbors were still awake and went through the building banging on doors and alerting the others as the fire was spreading through the building.  The residents only had time to flee, leaving everything behind.

KDFW-TV reports:  Rescuers [sic] responded to 911 calls about 11:30 p.m. Wednesday night and found fire shooting through the roof of the two-story complex.

"It spread very quickly to the next apartment and then spread down. And then there was an explosion," said resident Selena Zavaleta. "The flames were probably 20 feet above the roofline before the fire department got here."

The fire department struck a 2nd-alarm and had the fire out in about 45 minutes.  The early reports say that eight dwelling units were destroyed or heavily damaged by the fire.

WFAA-TV posted this video report from the scene:

The fire began in an upstairs unit, but the cause will not be determined until later today at the earliest.

Wood-Frame Row Houses Involved

A MAJOR FIRE IN ELIZABETH, NEW JERSEY, TUESDAY night was contained to three homes thanks to quick, upgraded responses.  Fire departments from two counties were dispatched to assist on the fire that began around 8:30 pm.

When the first units arrived they found two wood-frame row houses well-involved.  The buildings were all covered with old asphalt siding that was igniting easily and spreading rapidly from the point of origin in the rear of one of the homes.  Elizabeth Fire Chief Thomas McNamara said, "We call it ‘gasoline siding. Once it ignites, it just takes off."

By 11 pm the fire was largely knocked down but prior to that at 10:30 the firefighter evacuation signal was sounded as one of the building threatened collapse.  Around midnight two of the homes did collapse on themselves.

Two firefighters were treated for minor injuries and at least 5 residents were transported for smoke inhalation.  All the residents were able to escape safely, however.  The cause of the fire is still being investigated.

Another Big Burner in the Borscht Belt

Expected Total Loss to Cultural Icon

EXACTLY ONE WEEK AFTER A FORMER Catskills resort, the Tamarack Lodge, was destroyed along with 30 other buildings in a brush fire, the famed resort originally known as Brown's Hotel went up Saturday night in Sullivan County, New York.

HV Media image

The famous showcase hotel that was a major stop on the so-called "Borscht Belt" vaudeville circuit had been converted into 396 condominium units and is currently known as the Grandview Palace.

The fire broke out around 4 pm Saturday and swept through the entire structure, still burning on Sunday morning.  It is believed that all of the units have been destroyed.  About 175 to 200 people were there at the time and they all are believed to have evacuated safely.

More than 40 fire departments from Sullivan and Orange Counties were at the scene during a 30-hour span.

Hudson Valley Media provided this video taken during the early hours of the fire before nightfall:

The building had been having troubles lately with continual problems meeting the fire code and the Times Herald- Record has reported that the Town of Fallsburg was considering condemning the entire complex as unsafe.  The Times Herald-Record also reported:

Six firefighters were hospitalized for minor injuries, but relieved county and town officials said there were no casualties as of Sunday morning.

But only two buildings visible from Route 52 are left, Bill Lothrop, deputy fire coordinator for the county's Bureau of Fire, told about 20 residents at an emergency shelter at SUNY Sullivan.

"Please know you will never live in that building again," he said. "Grandview Palace is done."

The Yeshiva World News has the early STORY.

No other information is available yet as this is still an active incident.

Hat tip to Tom L.

The Grandview Palace WEBSITE gives this bit of history:

The world-renowned Browns Hotel opened its doors in 1944 and provided a vacation mountain retreat. The resort was a favorite haven for young and old alike because of the variety of activities offered, the spectacular shows featuring big name entertainers, and the gourmet meals in elaborate dining halls presented under dazzling chandeliers with background music by famous dance bands. As depicted in the movie "Dirty Dancing", the Browns become a tradition to families who returned year after year to enjoy the year round activities.

More Than 100 Fire Departments Involved

WABC-TV

A RARE WILDFIRE OF LARGE SIZE STRUCK Suffolk County in Long Island, New York this week.  A continuing drought and high winds have brought dozens of large wildfires along the east coast in recent days.  One of the hardest-fought was in Suffolk for the fire that started Monday afternoon around 3 pm. in the Manorville area.  It is believed that the fire began where someone was burning leaves or trash and the wind blew the embers into the dry woods where it took off.

WABC-TV

More than 1,000 acres were involved and at least nine structures including three homes were destroyed.  Aproximately 109 fire departments from across Long Island worked the fire with containment finally coming on Wednesday afternoon.  By Thursday morning it was mostly a mop-up operation chasing down hot spots.

WABC-TV reported on three firefighters whose "stump jumper" truck became overrun by the fire:

Three volunteer firefighters were injured when their truck got stuck in the sand. One of the men, Jim McGarry, spoke exclusively to Eyewitness News about the terrifying ordeal.

"The fire was basically chasing us because the wind was whipping," he said. "The fire was surrounding us all around." The men had to abandoned their truck and run to escape the flames that were quickly closing in.

"I can't even explain what goes through you mind," McGarry said. "It's just the instinct to escape, you know. Just your natural instincts of we gotta get out of here. We have to run through the fire to get out of the fire."

Two of the men were treated for smoke inhalation. The third, William Hille, suffered first and second degree burns to his face. Covered in burns and bandages, Hille recounted the moments when the fire truck became trapped.

"The flames were coming straight at my face," he said. "I was trying to knock them back as best I could." Hille, a correction officer at Rikers Island, said the two-hour long wait to be rescued brought on a fear like he's never encountered before.

Hille was interviewed in this video report from WABC:

At 5 pm Tuesday the Manorville FD announced that the fire was "out" and operations suspended, but several crews remained through the night and all day Wednesday clearing up the hot spots and monitoring the fire zone.

Condo Fire in Tennessee Leads to Full Forest Fire

Timeshare Resort Heavily Hit

AN UNOCCUPIED TIME-SHARE CONDO was the point of origin of a fire that spread to several apartment buildings and then into the forests of Sevier County, Tennessee, Tuesday.

WVLT-TV

The fire began around 7 am in the English Mountain Condominium Resort, a timeshare development containing ten buildings with 12 units in each.  A few of them are permanent residences, however.  The fire initially overwhelmed the fire companies on the scene and spread into the nearby woods and blossomed.  After enough firefighters has arrived at the scene, they were able to contain the structure fires to four buildings that burned out completely, losing 48 units.  The remaining six buildings were saved.

With a continuing drought and 15-25 mph winds, the woods fire spread quickly over 175 acres by Tuesday afternoon.  By then every fire department in Sevier County was on the scene plus several FD's from surrounding counties..

The trails and unimproved roads were not passable for FD tankers and the firefighters were unable to put any water on the flames, relying instead on forestry service dozers to clear fire breaks in an attempt to contain the fire.  As of Tuesday evening they had four bulldozers working the fire and concentrating on isolating known cabins on the mountain.   It continued smoldering and spreading slowly through the night.

Arson Charges Laid in Tamarack Resort Fire

Felony Charges Against New Landowner

A LONG ISLAND MAN WAS ARRESTED yesterday (Monday) and charged with multiple counts for starting the fire that burned more than 50 acres of woodland and destroyed more than 40 buildings including 18 residences in Ulster County Saturday.  See the Firegeezer report on the weekend fire HERE for the early details of the blaze.

CBS2 photo

The land that held a long-vacant Catskill resort known as Tamarack Lodge is owned by an unrecognized Indian tribe that wanted to develop the land but has been unsuccessful so far.  In order to pay their bills, the Western Mohegans recently sold part of their tract to Lance Muckenhaupt, 56, of Nassau County.  On Saturday he was visiting his property and decided to burn off some brush despite not having a permit and a burn ban in effect until May 15.

The fire quickly got away from him, thanks largely to high winds blowing that day, and it raced through the resort complex taking out all the buildings.

Muckenhaupt was charged Monday with two counts of felony arson, two counts of fourth-degree assault and four misdemeanor charges under state environmental conservation law, including setting a fire without clearing the area, burning without a permit, setting a fire than endangers property, and open burning during a statewide burning ban.

"We don’t see anything in the way of tools to contain a fire, so it was done in a reckless manner. This was a criminal act," Frank Falutotico of the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office told a press conference.

WCBS-TV filed this video report that includes some fire footage:

Firefighters Held Off by Gunman While House Burns

Problem Originated in Domestic Dispute

FIREFIGHTERS IN NORTH BEAVER TOWNSHIP near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, responded to a house fire Sunday afternoon around 2 pm and were surprised on arrival by a gunman threatening them.

KDKA-TV

WTAE-TV describes what happened:

"When the (firefighters) arrived at the scene and were getting their gear on preparing to fight the fire, a (man) confronted them with a shotgun and ordered them to stay away from the house and to back away," PSP Trooper Harry Gustafson said.

Troopers said when the fire crews couldn't get near the home, they arrived with guns drawn.

"The troopers were parked on the road, and they were walking down the driveway. They were ordering (the man) to drop his weapon. At that time, he shot himself," Gustafson said.

By then, the house was so heavily destroyed by the fire that there was nothing left for the firefighters to save.

It was disclosed later that the man had been in a long-term relationship with the woman who owned the house and they had recently parted with the woman getting a court protection order against the man.  He returned to the house while the woman and her family were out having Easter dinner together.  WKBN-TV has those details in this video report from the scene:

“Intentional” Brush Fire Takes Out 40+ Buildings

Abandoned Catskill Resort Complex

A BRUSH FIRE ON A WINDY DAY that was intentionally set despite a burn-ban raced through the former Tamarack Lodge summer resort in Ulster County, New York, Saturday.  The fire that began around 3 pm burned through the night into Sunday and has destroyed or damaged about 44 buildings including the Lodge clubhouse, pool house, and an assortment of outbuildings and rental cabins.

Times Herald-Record

The heavy winds and dry conditions drove the flames over 200 acres with flying embers and building parts setting spot fires all over the area.  Several hundred firefighters from 63 fire companies in four counties worked the fire and ran an extensive tanker shuttle.  Charles Mutz, the Ulster County Chief Fire Coordinator told YNN News, "We did lose multiple structures unfortunately, but really the issue we had was we could not control that fire. It was just too fast moving and large."

Times Herald-Record

The Lodge had been abandoned many years ago and the buildings condemned for occupation.  The property itself is owned by an unrecognized Indian tribe that calls itself Western Mohegans.  They have been occupying many of the bungalows and cabins on the land since they got control of it in 2001.  They have tried and failed to get federal recognition of their status and on March 9 of this year they filed for bankruptcy to stave off a foreclosure service by the sheriff.  The current tribal chief is interviewed in this video report:

Following the preliminary investigation, the sheriff has said that the fire was "set intentionally" and one or two people may be charged.  It will be decided later if the act was an arson or not.

The Times Herald-Record has the story and a video HERE.

The alarm was dispatched around 3 pm for the fire in a house in Reading Township that was working before the arrival of the FD.  Steve Roth of 911 Photography was at the scene and prepared this narrative of the incident:

WIthin two minutes of dispatch, Reading Township police chief advised the Adams County Control Center it was a working fire.  Chief 26 arrived to find a two story, single family dwelling with smoke and fire showing from the rear, a 2nd alarm was sounded as well as requested the state police fire marshal to the scene.

Navy Jet Crash Update

No Deaths Reported So Far

THE NAVY F/A-18 JET FIGHTER that crashed into a Virginia Beach, Virginia, apartment complex Friday afternoon caused extensive damage to at least five buildings but, amazingly, there have been no deaths reported so far.  (See original Firegeezer report HERE.)

The plane miraculously landed in this courtyard, missing a direct hit on
any of the apartment buildings.  The burning fuel set the surrounding
buildings alight.  (U. S. Navy photo)

As of Saturday morning three residents are still unaccounted for, but they may not have been there at the time of the crash and the authorities currently believe it is probable that they are elsewhere.  By Friday night the rescue teams had completed secondary searches of 95% of the crash zone.
Update:  The 3 missing people have been located and the FRD is no longer searching for any survivors.

The plane fortuitously landed on its belly in the courtyard of the buildings, thus sparing the destructiveness of a direct hit.  The spraying, burning jet fuel set the surrounding buildings on fire but a rapid response by the Virginia Beach Fire & Rescue along with the Oceana air base crash units quickly contained the fires.

The early reports are saying that the 2-seater training plane experienced some sort of mechanical failure that caused leaking fuel to ignite while it was taking off from the nearby air station.  The two pilots were attempting to guide the plane over to the ocean and failing to get that far they waited until almost too late to eject.  Witnesses say that they were down to treetop level before the seat ejectors were deployed and their parachutes only had time to open partially before they hit the ground.  Both pilots are going to recover ok with minimal injuries.  One of them has been admitted to the hospital while the other has been released.  About seven civilians suffered from either minor injuries or, in most cases, smoke inhalation.
Update:  Both pilots have been released from the hospital.

Blazing Bedding Burns Brooklyn Bus

Hot Springs Make the News

A NEW YORK CITY TRANSIT BUS heading from Staten Island to Brooklyn ran over a twin-size mattress around 11 pm Thursday night and started dragging it along the roadway.  As the bus traveled across the Verrazano Narrows Bridge, the mattress started shredding and the coil springs punctured the fuel tank.  As the fuel dribbled onto the now-heated springs, it caught fire and started spreading into the bus as it was entering Brooklyn.

NY Daily News

But wait, there's more.  When the bus driver pulled over and began evacuating his passengers, the blazing fuel ran down the curb and set six parked cars on fire making it a party.

WNYW-TV filed this video report:

"It was a really bad feeling watching my BMW burn," Mike Rabo told the Daily News, staring in disbelief at his charred 1992 Beamer.

This video was posted on Saturday from the Netherlands.  According to the accompanying write-up, this old Volvo was being driven by "a little old lady" who wasn't aware that her car was on fire and kept driving.  Passersby phoned the fire brigade who responded and as they were arriving, the woman discovered her plight, stopped the car and got out without taking it out of gear.  That explains the prescient positioning of the first-arriving engine.  Everybody was safe.

We will update this report when more information comes out.

WPVI-TV has just posted this video from their helicopter:

WPVI-TV is also live-streaming video from the helicopter periodically HERE.

Update:
The fire was marked under control at 4 pm and it is reported that the main part of the house has been gutted.  There were people living there who were renting the property.

How to Meet Your Local Firefighters

But There Are Better Ways Than This:

A COLORADO SPRINGS, COLORADO, MAN was finished with his cigarette while driving through the city Monday afternoon, so he flicked the butt out the window.  But as luck would have it, the wind currents blew it back inside the car where the lit cigarette nestled itself into the rear-seat upholstery.

It was around 4 pm when he first learned about his goof-up and decided to call some folks over to see what happened.  They arrived on Big Red a few minutes later while this home video was cranking:

The driver can always blame it on the auto manufacturer for not putting ash trays in the cars anymore.

Thanks to Ron for the video.

Two Days For Full Extinguishment

A FIRE IN DOWNTOWN NANTES, FRANCE,  has destroyed several businesses along with many apartments and homes.  The fire started Sunday afternoon and was not completely extinguished until nearly two days later on Tuesday.  The buildings are located in an "island" within the buildings facing the streets on the block.  Access for the firefighters was limited to narrow alleyways leading back to the area.

Presse Ocean

The cause or even the point of origin are still not yet known.  Dozens of people lost their residences but they all escaped safely.  The only reported injuries so far are to two firefighters who were concussed by an exploding gas bottle.  Late Tuesday morning there were still nearly 100 firefighters mopping up the hot spots in the area.

Ouest-France / Dubray

Sixteen businesses were completely lost and the structures containing them will have to be rebuilt before they can move back in.  Nine of the apartments will require a year before they can be used again.  As many as 48 residences were affected by the fire.

Le Parisien has the story HERE.
Ouest-France has MORE.
Le Telegramme also has some DETAILS.
