April – May Recalls

Lots to report on this month, so let's get started:

Bosch is recalling (NHTSA Recall #13E 011) certain Hydromax brake master cylinders with 2" bore and 84 cubic inch reservoir with a brake fluid level indicator switch and without a differential pressure switch. These were manufactured between July 1, 2011 and April 12, 2012.

The brake fluid level indicator (FLI) may not properly detect a low brake fluid situation and warn the driver. If the brake system develops an external leak, it may result in a loss of brake fluid below the detection level of the fluid indicator switch.

Bosch will notify customers and replace the switch free of charge. Owners may contact Bosch Technical Support and Warranty Hotline at 855 426 7247.

They don’t give any indication of what vehicles may have these cylinders in them.

September Recalls

Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems is recalling (NHTSA Recall #12E020) certain brake valves, treadle assemblies and/or plunger kits sold as aftermarket replacement equipment, and sold and installed as original equipment to various vehicle manufacturers.

The brake valve plunger may fracture during brake application, resulting in reduced brake pedal angle and travel. This condition may limit the driver’s ability to deliver full pressure from the foot brake valve. There is also a potential that the brake plunger could become lodged and not allow release of the service brakes.

Bendix will notify owners of the aftermarket equipment and will provide a free remedy. Bendix is working with vehicle manufacturers to identify and repair the vehicles that contain the subject brake valves, treadle assemblies and plunger kits, free of charge.

The safety recall began in June. Owners may contact their vehicle manufacturer or Bendix at 440 329 9386.

And let me add my usual word of caution when I see a part or component being sold as aftermarket replacement: When a component manufacturer puts a part into the supply chain, it may pass through several hands before it reaches the end user (YOU). At any one of those changes of hands, there’s the possibility of the manufacturer or the last guy in line losing track of where it finally went. So you need to be aware of what you have purchased or had installed on your vehicle. If you have had a such a part replaced, you need to make it your business to try to identify it and get with whoever sold it to you to find out if it is or is not one of the ones that has been recalled.

Dorman Products is recalling (12E-021) certain service replacement equipment control arms, part numbers 520-121, 520-122, 2410121 and 2410122, shipped from November 2010 through January 2012.

The control arms may have inadequate heat treatment of the ball stud, possibly resulting in a premature fracture. Fracture of the ball stud on the control arm can result in impaired steering.

Dorman will notify owners and refund all amounts paid and/or replace recalled units at no cost to the owner. The safety recall began on June 13. Owners may contact Dorman at 800 523 2492.

And again, the caution above applies.

Kovatch Mobile Equipment (KME) is recalling (12V253) certain 2010 Predator, Predator SS, Predator Panther and Predator XL vehicles equipped with feature code 04AZX Meritor Wabco Electronic Stability Control (ESC) units. Under certain road and driving conditions, vehicle body roll and road inclination characteristics may adversely affect the slip angle calculation of the ESC system. This might cause the ESC to perceive an oversteeing condition and therefore apply the outer wheel brake on the front axle until the vehicle is perceived to be stable.

Consequence: The vehicle may deviate from the intended line of travel, increasing the risk of a crash.

KME will notify owners, and dealers will install a new ESC module free of charge. The recall began on June 5. Owners may contact KME at 570 669 5154. KME’s recall number is L-02.

*  *  *  *  *

Daimler Trucks North America is recalling (12V266) some 2013 Frieghtliner , Western Star and Freightliner Custom Chassis trucks equipped with Detroit Axle front axle knuckles.

The front knuckles on these vehicles may have a machining error in the front wheel bearing area that may lead to a premature spindle failure.

DTNA will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and replace the affected components free of charge. The recall began on or before August 11, 2012. Owners may contact DTNA at 800 547 0712. DTNA’s recall number is FL-629.

Spartan is recalling (12V279) some 2010 – 2012 Gladiator chassis equipped with a Cummins ISX 15L engine and fan clutch assembly.

Fasteners used to mount the fan clutch mounting bracket to the front of the engine may shear, resulting in the cooling fan, fan clutch, and mounting bracket separating from the engine. If this occurs and the cab is in the raised position, the separation could increase the risk of personal injury.

Spartan Chassis will notify owners, and repair the vehicles. The recall was to have begun about July 13. Owners may contact Spartan at 800 543 5008. Spartan’s recall number is 12007.

*  *  *  *  *

As predicted some months ago, Pierce is issuing its own recall (12V-311) of certain vehicles manufactured with Detroit Diesel DD13 EPA07 and EPA10 engines. In Pierce’s case, the engines were installed as original equipment on some Arrow XT, Contender Big Block, Dash CF, Quantum and Velocity chassis. The pump to rail high pressure fuel line support system used on these engines is sensitive to assembly torque and may be damaged during service work. As a result of other repairs, the line supports may loosen, potentially leading to fuel line cracking and a fuel leak.

Pierce will notify owners, and the high pressure fuel line support will be replaced by Daimler Trucks North America authorized service facilities, free of charge. The safety recall is expected to begin during March, 2012. Owners may contact DTNA at 800 547 0212 or Pierce at 920 832 3000. Pierce’s recall number is 74B233.

That's all for now.  Enjoy this warm weather while it lasts.  Sam.

March Recalls

The Bendix recall (NHTSA 12E-001) for the ATR-6 traction relay valve as reported earlier is still making the news. This is Bendix’s recall, in addition to the various truck builders’ recalls. In this one the now say they have a temporary fix, pending a permanent repair being developed.

 Later information from other more recent publications indicates that they have since developed a permanent repair and are making efforts to get them into the field. This notice says, "Bendix will notify owners who purchased the affected ATR-6 traction relay valves as aftermarket parts.

I’m sure Bendix will make every effort to notify owners, but as I always like to say, if you bought one at a parts counter, there’s a chance that Bendix will have no way of knowing that you have it. If you did so, or if you had one installed at an independent repair shop, I highly recommend that you go back to that parts house or repair shop. Let them trace it out and take appropriate action if need be.

 Most or all truck builders who were holding up shipments of trucks have gotten theirs and are now shipping again.

Paccar (Kenworth and Peterbilt) have issued their own recall (12V-026) for vehicles that were shipped with the affected valves. They show a total of 15,932 trucks involved in their recall.

*  *  *

Ford is recalling (12V-009) certain 2011 F-650 trucks manufactured between 2/2/2012 and 2/17 2011, and equipped with a Meritor MFS08 front steer axle.

 The bolts attaching the steering arm to the steering knuckle were not properly tightened. This condition can result in the steering arm loosening or separating.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and repair the vehicles as necessary. Owners may contact the Ford Motor Co. Customer Relationship Center at 866 436 7332. Ford’s campaign number is 11S26. A total of 36 vehicles may be involved.

Consequence:
MACK TRUCKS IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2002-2005 MR AND LE HEAVY TRUCKS, MANUFACTURED FROM FEBRUARY 1, 2002, THROUGH DECEMBER 22, 2004. OVER TIME, THE VEHICLE’S LOAD MAY RESULT IN FATIGUE CRACKS OF THE FRONT AXLE BEAM. THESE CRACKS CAN PROPAGATE AND RESULT IN COMPLETE FRACTURE OF THE AXLE BEAM.

Remedy:
THIS RECALL RELATES TO PREVIOUS RECALLS 09V-240 AND 10V-069. ANALYSIS OF THESE RECALLS HAS SHOWN THAT AFTER THE RECEIVING THE REMEDIES, THE AXLES MAY STILL CRACK. AS SUCH, MACK TRUCKS WILL REPLACE THE AFFECTED AXLES ON ANY MR AND LE MODELS CONFIGURED AS FRONT-LOADER OR SIDE-LOADER REFUSE TRUCKS. AXLES ON ALL OTHER MR AND LE MODELS WILL RECEIVE A MAG-PARTICLE INSPECTION AND MACK WILL REPLACE ANY AFFECTED AXLE BEAMS FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN ON OR BEFORE FEBRUARY 15, 2012. OWNERS MAY CONTACT MACK TRUCKS AT 1-800-866-1177.

I don’t know how many MRs are in the fire service. I’m sure there are some. I doubt if there are many, if any LEs being used as fire trucks.

*  *  *

KME is recalling (12V-027) certain 2003 through 2011 AerialCats equipped with a bucket that is operated with electronic controls and a turntable that is equipped with hydraulic controls. On these vehicles, upon activation of the dead man’s switch on the turntable, the ladder may unexpectedly move. If the ladder unexpectedly moves, the operator may lose control of the bucket location.

KME will notify owners and dealers will repair the trucks free of charge. Owners may contact KME at 570 669 5154.

This is my own thought on the subject. I know of at least one, and there may be other earlier similar AerialCats that have gone back to KME for maintenance and/or repairs. I have to wonder if, in the process of doing repairs, KME may have upgraded controls to later standards, bringing them into the recalled range. This is just a guess on my part. I have no way of knowing this as I don’t know what KME does when vehicles come back into their facility for work. But it might be worth the price of a phone call.

*  *  *

HME has a recall (12V-033) out for a total of two 2011 1871 fire trucks with Cummins engines. This recall is for the same V-band clamps as reported last October (Cummins, Pierce) and November (Daimler, KME). HME is working with Cummins to identify the owners. Cummins is handling the notification and remedy. Owners may contact Cummins at 812 377 5000. Their campaign number is C1154.

 That's it for this month.  Even though this winter has been truly mild where I am, Spring is always welcome. I’m ready for it! …. Sam

February Recalls

Update, Wednesday Feb. 29:
One more recall added… scroll down.

The big item this month, as has been all over the trucking industry trade press, is the Bendix ATR-6 Traction Relay Valves. These valves are part of an air-braked vehicle’s braking system. As described in the Feb. 13 edition of Transport Topics, "The component, a newly designed ATR-6 traction relay valve is part of sophisticated vehicle safety and stability systems. In a few cases in subzero temperatures, the defective part has caused spontaneous braking, which in turn has led to vehicle fires."

The valves were produced from Dec. 2, 2010 through Jan. 18, 2012 and sold as aftermarket service parts or installed as original equipment by various vehicle manufacturers. They may have been installed on as many as 60.000 Navistar, Paccar (Kenworth and Peterbilt) and Volvo trucks.

The NHTSA recall number is 12E-001. Owners may contact Bendix at 440 329 9000 or their vehicle manufacturer. Paccar has issued its own recall (12V-026). They may be contacted at 425 828 5440 for Kenworth and 940 591 4196 for Peterbilt.

As I have said many times in the past with respect to aftermarket parts, Bendix may have no idea where a part that was sold over the counter at a parts store has wound up. So if you think you may have bought one (or more), you need to take it upon yourself to contact your supplier or Bendix, identify the part and see if, indeed, it is part of the recall. Note also that some vehicles may have more than one such valve.

* * * * *

Meritor is recalling (11E-053) certain rear drive axles and front non-drive steer axles produced from July 25, 2011 through September 9, 2011 sold and installed as original equipment to Hino Manufacturing.

Certain suspect axles with wheel ends may have been improperly assembled fastening hardware or nut locking features.

Meritor is working with Hino Motors to identify and notify owners. Owners may contact Meritor at 800 535 5560, or Hino Motors (no phone number given). Meritor’s campaign number is C12AC.

This appears to be the same as Hino’s recall that was reported here last month.

* * * * *

Daimler Trucks North America is recalling (11E-055) certain Detroit Diesel DD13 EPA 2010 engines manufactured between Jan. 1, 2010 and Dec. 15, 2011 and sold to Pierce Manufacturing.

The engine shutdown software normally provided to protect the engine and vehicle may not have been disabled for engines intended for emergency vehicle applications. If the vehicle operator receives and ignores multiple warnings indicating the need for operator intervention, the engine may shut down unexpectedly. Unexpected emergency vehicle shutdown under certain conditions could hamper rescue operations and place the public at risk.

DTNA will notify owners, and dealers will disable the engine shutdown software free of charge. The recall is expected to begin around Feb. 22. Owners may contact DTNA at 800 547 0712. DTNA’s recall campaign number is 11C-4 (FL-621).

DTNA has its own recall (11V-605) out for 2011 and 2012 Freightliner Business Class M2 and Western Star 4900s for the same thing. The same campaign number is being used.

* * * * * * *

DTNA is recalling (11V-576) certain 2011 through 2013 Freightliner S2 106 CH and S2C 106 CAB chassis.

The grid heater ground wire may contact the relay power terminal and rub and chafe potentially resulting in a short circuit.

DTNA will notify owners, and dealers will inspect to ensure that the wire is correctly routed and modified as required to ensure adequate clearance with the power terminal.

The repairs will be performed by DTNA dealers free of charge. The campaign number is FL-619.

Sutphen Corp. is recalling (11V-570) some 2010 SL75 ladder trucks and some 2010/2011 pumpers and rescue trucks. This has to do with Cummins engine exhaust system V-band clamp assemblies. The part numbers listed are the same ones that I reported on this past November from Daimler Benz North America and KME recalls.

There’s a bit of conflicting information on this one. I went in and looked at the actual documents. The NHTSA report says Cummins ISB and ISX engines are involved. But Sutphen’s submittal, which is a form that was filled out by hand shows ISC and ISL engines.

As it turns out, there was one SL75 and 11 engines or rescues involved. Hopefully, all owners have been notified by now. If not, Cummins can be reached at 812 377 5000 or Sutphen at 866 287 5549. Cummins campaign number is C1154.

Ford is recalling (11V-582) certain 2011 and 2012 F250, F350, F450 and F550 heavy duty vehicles.

The transmission can be shifted out of the Park postion without depressing the brake pedal due to a brake shift interlock switch problem.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the brake shift interlock function and replace the switch if necessary, free of charge. Owners may contact the Ford Motor Co. Customer Relationship Center at 866 436 7332.

* * * * *

Navistar is recalling (11V-589) certain 2012 International Duratar and IC Bus HC heavy trucks and buses that were equipped with a Meritor MFS08 series non-drive, front steer axle.

During the assembly process the steering attachment bolts may have been insufficiently torqued.

Navistar will notify owners and dealers will repair the vehicles free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a remedy schedule. Owners may contact Navistar at 800 448 7825. The campaign number is 11521.

I looked at the documentation submitted to NHTSA and see that there are a total of 10 trucks and one bus involved. No way of knowing if any of them are in the fire service.

* * * * *

Add Navistar to the Meritor electronic stability control recall that I reported in December. Navistar’s NHTSA number is 11V-5990. Navistar’s campaign number is 11522.

Update, Feb. 29:  Add Spartan to the list of chassis builders who are involved in the Meritor Electronic Stability Control system recall (NHTSA #11V-500). Looking at the NHTSA documents I see that there are a total of 799 vehicles involved. They range from 2007 through 2012, and pretty much across the emergency vehicle product line. Spartan will notify owners (they may have done so already) and will make repairs free of charge. The recall began on December 19, 2011. Spartan's campaign number is 11026. They can be reached at 800 543 5008, Option 5.

………. That's it for this month. Sam.

Baldwin Filters is recalling (11E-046) certain Baldwin and Hastings brand oil and fuel filters sold as aftermarket parts designed for use in a variety of small diesel engines used in light and medium duty applications such as pickup trucks, vans or buses. The defective oil/fuel filters were manufactured between July and October 2011. The gasket material loses the ability to resist permanent deformation under heat and load. As the event progresses, the gasket is no longer able to provide the necessary sealing capability. Fluid loss will subsequently occur.

Baldwin will retrofit the filter with new gaskets free of charge. Owners may contact Baldwin filters Service Engineering at 800 822 5394, Ext. 79729. A total of 130,529 units are affected.

This is another case where the manufacturer (Baldwin, in this case) will have no way of knowing who, as end user, bought these parts. They’re sold to users by parts houses or installing shops. They may have passed through several distributors, warehouses, etc. before winding up with the end user. So if you think you might have one, it’s going to be up to you to try to find out and get it taken care of. NHTSA’s web site has a list of the affected part numbers. Since I use Baldwin filters for many of my replacements here, I contacted my supplier. I was told that they were aware of the recall and have a list of the part numbers also.

* * * * *

Meritor is recalling (11E-048) certain MFS-08 series non-drive front axles sold as original equipment to be installed on various heavy trucks.  During assembly, steering attachment bolts may have been insufficiently torqued. Insufficient torque of the steering arm bolts may result in bolt fatigue and fracture and/or arm separation.

Meritor is in the process of developing the notice and accompanying service instructions. The safety recall began on Nov. 23, 2011. Owners may contact Meritor at 800 535 5560. Meritor’s recall campaign number is C12AB. 162 units may be involved.  As with the ESC recalls, there may also be recalls issued by truck manufacturers.

* * * * *

Ford is recalling (11E-047) certain replacement fuel tanks that could be installed into 2004 – 2008 E-150, E-250 and E-350 vans. The affected fuel tanks have an extra OBDII sensor hole on the top of the tank that may not be properly sealed and may leak fuel.

Ford will notify owners and dealers will replace the fuel tanks free of charge. The safety recall began on Nov. 28, 2011. Owners may contact Ford Motor Co. Customer Relationship Center at 800 232 5952. Ford’s recall campaign number is 11S22. 17 units may be involved.

* * * * *

Hino is recalling (11V-537) certain 2012 ND8J, NE8J, NJ8J and NV8J trucks. During assembly the wheel end retainer on the front or rear axle may have been installed incorrectly. The wheel hub and axle shaft can separate from the vehicle. Hino is in the process of developing a remedy and a notification schedule for this campaign.

Hino is also recalling (11V-549) certain 2012 NE8J trucks. During assembly, steering attachment bolts may have been insufficiently torqued. Insufficient torque of the steering arm bolts may result in bolt fatigue and fracture and/or arm separation. Hino is in the process of developing a remedy and a notification schedule for this campaign. 37 units may be involved.

* * * * *

Daimler Trucks is recalling (11V-558) certain 2011 Western Star 4900 trucks equipped with Meritor axle assemblies. The weld that attaches a tower bracket to the housing in suspect assemblies may crack as a result of improper welding procedures.

Daimler Trucks dealers will inspect the axles for cracks and welds will be repaired as necessary free of charge. The safety recall is expected to begin on or about Jan. 17, 2012. Owners may contact Daimler Trucks at 800 547 0712. 6 units may be involved.

That’s all for now. Just think, only three more weeks until pitchers and catchers report! And with that, the annual hibernation that begins with the end of the World Series can come to an end.

December Recalls

Last month’s report included one from Daimler Trucks on a problem with certain of Meritor WABCO’s Electronic Stability Control units. Shortly after that, several apparatus manufacturers added their own recalls. As reported by Fire Chief magazine and picked up on the “Around the Fire Web” column here, Pierce, E-1, Ferrara, Sutphen, American LaFrance and HME are all on board.

Now, Meritor WABCO has come on board with their own recall. It states:

Meritor WABCO is recalling (NHTSA recall No. 11E-039) certain electronic stability control (ESC) modules with part numbers 446 065 020 0, 400 850 179 0, 400 850 195 0, 446 065 027 0 and 400 850 185 0, shipped to a variety of North American vehicle manufacturers from August 2005 through September 2011.

“Under certain road and driving conditions, vehicle body roll and road inclination characteristics may adversely affect the slip angle calculation of the electronic stability control system. This might case the ESC to perceive an over steering situation and therefore apply the outer wheel brake on the front axle until the vehicle is perceived to be stable. If the driver is slow to react during this ESC intervention, the vehicle may deviate from the intended line of travel, increasing the risk of a crash.”

Meritor WABCO is working with the vehicle manufacturers to identify and notify vehicle owners of the recall. Owners may contact Meritor WABCO at 248 435 8001 or their vehicle manufacturer.

Ferrara’s recall is NHTSA #11V-507. Their recall began on Oct. 25. They may be contacted at 225 567 7100.

ALF’s recall is NHTSA #11V-515. They have not yet provided a notification schedule. ALF can be contacted at 843 486 7703. Their campaign number is ALF-0111.

Meritor also has a recall (NHTSA 11E-044) for certain 16mm C89-3121-2024 and C61-3121-2025 housings assembled into RD-23-164 drive axles produced from Dec. 1, 2010 through Feb. 14, 2011.

These axles were installed as original equipment in certain Mack and Daimler Trucks vehicles. The weld that attaches a bracket to the housing may crack as a result of improper welding procedures. This may cause bracket detachment resulting in potential loss of vehicle control.

Meritor is working with the vehicle manufacturesr to identify and notify the vehicle owners. Repairs will be done by the vehicle manufacturers’ dealers, free of charge. The safety recall began on Oct. 18, 2011. Owners may contact Meritor at 800 535 5560 or their vehicle manufacturer. Meritor’s recall campaign number is C12AA.

That’s all that I see for December that affects fire apparatus. Stay safe out there, everyone goes home! Happy New Year! ….. Sam

November Recalls

Daimler Trucks is recalling (NHTSA #11V-465) some 2006 – 2012 Freightliner Business Class M2, Cascadia, Century, Columbia, Coronado and Sterling A-Line vehicles built with Meritor Wabco electronic stability control system (ESC).

Under certain road and driving conditions, vehicle body roll and road inclination characteristics may adversely affect the slip angle calculation of the ESC system. This might cause the ESC to perceive an over steering situation and therefore apply the outer wheel brake on the front axle until the vehicle is perceived to be stable. If the driver is slow to react during this ESC intervention, the vehicle may deviate from the intended line of travel increasing the risk of a crash.

Daimler Trucks will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ESC module with the appropriate software version as necessary, free of charge. An interim owner notification will be mailed on or about Nov. 1, 2011. The date for availability of the final remedy is subject to validation testing and parts availability. The safety recall is expected to begin on or about March 30, 2012. Owners may contact Daimler Trucks at 800 547 0712.

Daimler is also recalling (11V478) certain 2004 through 2008 heavy trucks equipped with EPA04 model MBE 4000 engines built with plastic low pressure fuel lines and fuel filters mounted near the center of the engine on the left hand side.

The plastic low pressure fuel line between the engine mounted fuel filter and the engine block may develop a substantial fuel leak.

Daimler Trucks will notify owners and the remedy will be performed by Detroit Diesel Corp. authorized repair facilities. Vehicles will be inspected and the plastic low pressure fuel line will be replaced with a steel low pressure line. This service will be performed free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided an owner notification schedule. Owners may contact Daimler at 800 547 0712.

Daimler is also recalling (11V-474) some 2011 and 2012 Business Class M2 and Coronado trucks equipped with Cummins ISX or ISL engines.

The V-band clamp assembly part numbers Q187684, Q187685 and Q187686, used to connect the inlet and outlet cone sections to the diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC)/diesel particulate filter (DPF) include a T-bolt which can fracture when subjected to stress or load. A fracture or failure of the T-bolt may cause the clamp to loosen and the inlet or outlet sections attached to the DOC/DPF housing to disconnect. If the inlet or outlet sections disconnect, hot exhaust gases can vent prior to exiting the tailpipe, creating the risk of combustion and fire. If both clamps fail there is a risk in some applications that the DOC/DPF housing may detach completely, creating a road hazard.

*  *  *

KME has an identical recall (11V-471) out for certain 2010 and 2011 Predator pumpers and 2011 5500 rescue trucks.

Both Daimler and KME are working with Cummins to identify and notify owners of the recall campaigns. Repairs will be performed by authorized Cummins dealers free of charge. Owners may contact Cummins at 812 377 5000, Daimler at 800 547 0712 or KME at 800 235 3928. Cummins recall campaign number is C1154.

*  *  *

Wheeled Coach is recalling (11V-470) certain 2004 through 2010 Ford E-350 Type II diesel ambulances originally sold or registered in all New England states, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, D.C., West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa and Missouri for a potential corrosion issue on the secondary battery terminal. As the secondary battery terminal corrodes, the Wheeled Coach accessory power cable is affected and the siren, warning lights and interior patient compartment lights could be intermittent or fail to operate.

Wheeled Coach will mail retrofit kits along with installation instructions to customers, or repairs can be performed by a service center free of charge. The recall began on Sept. 30, 2011. Owners may contact Wheeled Coach Customer Service at 800 628 8178.

Cold weather is upon many of us. Remember the tips that I and many others have talked about in the past for preventing freeze ups. Mine can be reviewed HERE, HERE, and HERE, or by going to “Engineer’s Desk.” There are many others to be found in other publications and web sites.

That’s it for now. Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays and Happy New Year to all. Stay safe….. Sam

Navistar Emergency Vehicles Services Meeting

Navistar International has had an Emergency Services Vehicle Advisory Group for six or seven years now. It usually meets once a year. Bob Neitzel, Vocational Marketing Manager likes to tie the meeting date and place to a national fire service organization conference. For the last two years it has been before the start of International Association of Fire Chiefs Volunteer and Combination Officers Section in Clearwater Beach, Fla. The meeting was held on Nov. 9, 2011

One of the topics discussed was the Environmental Protection Agency’s diesel engine emissions standards.

Many people who post on Firehouse.com and other places are of the opinion that at some point, Navistar’s MaxxForce engines will have to be switched to Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) and use Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) in order to meet EPA 2010 NOx emissions standards. Right now they use enhanced cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR). They are operating on credits gained from engines being under 2007 standards for some years.

Navistar says they do not have any plans to change. They state that some engines meet the 2010 standard already. The rest will soon. All engines can meet the standard now, but they would sacrifice fuel economy in order to do so. Navistar is not willing to make that tradeoff. They believe that with some additional tweaking they will be able to bring all engines into compliance long before they run out of credits.

They also point out that SCR engines convert the NOx into two byproducts: Nitrogen and carbon dioxide. Navistar believes that the next EPA standards will include reducing or eliminating CO2. MaxxForce engines aftertreatment does not produce any CO2 now.

Navistar also states that they do not have any problems with DPF plugging.

That's it for now.  Have a Happy Thanksgiving……. Sam

Dozens of FD's in Two States Honor a Firefighter / War Casualty

In August, 2006, Bryn Athyn Fire Co. (Montgomery County, Pennsylvania) lost a member, killed in action while serving with the U.S. Army in Iraq. Tristan Smith was a young man, recently promoted to Lieutenant in the fire company, and nephew of Chief Kris Smith.

The fire company learned that his remains would be released from the Dover Air Force Base mortuary on Friday, September 8, and transported back to Bryn Athyn by government contracted hearse. A number of members got together and decided to send apparatus to Dover to provide a fire department escort. Word got out, so on that day Bryn Athyn Engine 11, Special Service 11 and Ambulance 355-1 were joined by Willow Grove Fire Co. Engine 10-2 and Horsham Fire Co. Squad 15.

Life member and former Deputy Chief Greg Jakubowski used his many connections as he states:

“Advance contacts had been made with numerous area companies, along with Tucker Dempsey, 1st Vice-President of the Delaware State Fire Chief’s Association, to properly respect Tristan on his ride back. Tucker is past chief of the Cheswold, Delaware Fire Company. He had connected us with Kevin Wilson, past chief of the Clayton, Delaware Fire Company, retired Delaware State Police officer, and Chief of the Wyoming, Delaware Police Department. Tucker coordinated the Delaware state fire response, and Kevin assisted us in gaining a Delaware State Police escort and was the designated Public Information Officer to interface with the Delaware media. Both of these individuals were HUGE assets in coordinating our trip down and back through Delaware.”

Bryn Athyn career FF/EMT Jeff Tarman made contact with members of fire companies in Delaware County, Pa. to let them know of our plans. Plymouth Township, Montgomery County Fire Marshall Andy Mount did the same in central Montgomery County.

 * * *

On the way down we took a brief rest break at Cheswold, Delaware’s station before continuing the short distance to Dover.

*  *  *

*  *  *

*  *  *

At the time we were to depart Dover AFB we learned that there had been some misunderstanding on the part of the hearse driver. He had left the base and got onto Delaware Rt. 1 to begin what he thought would be a routine trip. A Delaware State Trooper who had been assigned to escort the procession through the state quickly stopped the hearse and explained to the driver the change of plan. As Greg Jakubowski explains in his write up “…but not until the procession had entered Delaware Route 1 North, bypassing a Dover Fire Department memorial with crossed ladders and an American flag set up on Route 113 just North of the Route 1 turnoff.”

Once formed, the procession moved from Rt. 1 to US 13.

*  *  *

The towns that we passed through or near in Delaware included Cheswold, Smyrna, Blackbird, Townsend, Middletown, Odessa, Port Penn, Saint Georges, and Wilmington Manor.

*  *  *

*  *  *

*  *  *

Other nearby fire departments also picked spots along the highway and joined in. At each town we went through there was apparatus staged beside the road. When it was possible there were traditional aerial ladder arches with flags displayed, or even single aerials with flags. Members stood beside the road to render honors.
