Guinness Goes Fire Patch

Comments Off

"Brother, Can You Spare a Patch?"

AN ALBANY, OREGON, FIRE MARSHAL THINKS that he has more fire department patches in his collection than anybody else in the world.  The official Guinness Book Record for that rare claim was set in 1992 by a Spanish firefighter in Madrid who had a certified collection of 4,513 patches.

Deputy FM Bob Brooks knows that he has several thousand more than that and he went through the procedure required by Guiness to have his collection considered for the title.  Brooks has been actively collecting fire/rescue uniform patches for 27 years and has accumulated more than 8,000 of them.

Albany Democrat-Herald

This past Wednesday the big event was held to publicly display and verify his collection.  Sixty-eight folding tables were set up at the Linn Fair and Expo Center, and three certified judges were assembled, Albany's mayor, the police chief, and a citizen.  They spent about 90 minutes individually counting the patches while affirming that they were all fire patches and arrived at the total of 8,158.  The required certifications along with photographic evidence were forwarded to Guinness and a judgement will be announced in a few weeks.

This video report prepared by the Albany Fire Department shows how they did it:

The Albany Democrat-Herald reported:

Brooks has at least one patch from a fire service agency in every state and the District of Columbia. With some 25,000 fire agencies nationwide, he figures he'll be collecting for another decade at least. All the badges eventually will be displayed by the Oregon Fire Service Museum when it has a permanent home.

Some of the agencies no longer exist. One of Brooks' favorite patches took him 15 years to obtain: from Sherwood, now part of Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue. The old patch bore a Robin Hood-style bowman in green.

Another favorite comes from Silver Lake, Wis. The badge shows a fire truck with its back wheels sinking into a pool of water.

Brooks speaks to fire chiefs personally when he calls to request a badge. This particular chief said the design documents a time when a rookie firefighter tried driving across a frozen lake as a shortcut to a call. The moral: Don't.

"They're using that as a mark of their community," he said. "I love when I see that."

This tv video report filed by KMTR-TV also talks to FM Brooks about his toughest "catch" of all his patches:

Collectors Keep Watch for Stolen Items

A matching pair of ornate hand lanterns were recently stolen from their storage box at the Fire Museum in Manchester, Conncecticut.. The lanterns are 2 of 7 belonging to an ornate parade hose cart. (a matching set)  The photo below is one of the missing pair.

These lanterns date back to a parade wagon purchased in 1882 by Crescent Hose Company #2. The parade wagon is currently on loan to the Connecticut Fireman's Historical Society.

This closeup photo below of a mounted lantern which matches the portable lanterns on the wagon, further identifies the glass work design that is found on the stolen lanterns.

The Manchester Police Department has several leads, but are still investigating. They can be reached at 860-645-5544.

Morning Lineup – February 27

Sunday Morning Lineup

This week we will be introducing a new feature to our Digital Day Room©.  A regular posting about fire/rescue collectibles and memorabilia will make its appearance and will be initially called the Collectors Corner.  The new category will include items and articles relating to the things that many people like to collect and enjoy such as old helmets, firetruck models, tools and memorabilia of all sorts.  As the column evolves, we might add in books and other such items, but we’ll see how it goes.  It’s really up to you on what this feature will cover and your input will be valuable.  There’s really no definite parameters on what we list and talk about, as long as it is related to fire, rescue and EMS topics.

In the past we have gladly covered auctions that included fire memorabilia and naturally, these will be moved into this category.  I have observed from casual comments and discussions that there are a lot of people who like to save these sorts of things, in some cases they might only keep 2 or 3 favorite mementos.  But it all counts here.  And this column will rely on your contributions, so please don’t hesitate to send  in your news items, requests, or items that you are willing to trade.  And your suggestions on what to do with this feature are most important right now, so let’s get started.  What have you got?  Whadda ya’ want?

The other thing that we have to get started on is this morning’s equipment check.  And I need to get some more coffee going.  I’ll check on the Sunday breakfast while I’m there, too.
