Montgomery County Fire Takes Lead On New Internet Radio Show And Podcast

patch-mcfrs.jpg

BEING THE RADIO JUNKIE that I am, I stumbled upon a pleasant surprise over at BlogTalkRadio.com. The Montgomery County Fire & Rescue Services (Maryland) Life Safety Section has begun ‘broadcasting’ a new radio show over the Internet. The show titled ‘MCFRS Fire Side Chat’ hosted by Bill Delaney, is described as “A new and innovative communication tool that will be used by Montgomery County Fire and Rescue to disseminate educational and informational programming to the citizens we serve as well as our own membership.”

Montgomery County selected BlogTalkRadio, a social radio network that allows users to connect quickly and directly with their audience. Using an ordinary telephone and computer hosts can create free, live, call-in talk shows with unlimited participants that are automatically archived and made available as podcasts. No software download is required. Listeners can subscribe to shows via RSS into iTunes and other feed readers. - Craig Luecke, Firegeezer.com

Municipal Water Restrictions Hinder Firefighter Efforts?

frontstory-mtairyfire-090207-2.jpg

DID THE CURRENT DROUGHT and water restrictions keep firefighters from putting a quick knock on the fire in historic Mt. Airy, Maryland? The Fredericknewspost.com is reporting an updated story stating that firefighters “got permission from town officials to use municipal water”. Until they received permission to use water from the hydrants, a tanker shuttle and relay operation was used to obtain water from local ponds.

Water restrictions have been in place within the Mt. Airy city limits during the latter part of the summer due to the drought – which seems to be an annual affair in mid-Maryland.

And if you are sitting there thinking that this is some sort of joke – it’s not. The town was established back in 1830 and was a major stop along the B&O Railroad and the historical National Pike that ran between Frederick and Baltimore, MD. The hydrant system has been there for decades along with municipal water. The town has numerous elevated water tanks dotted throughout the town. In other words, the water was there and available from the hydrants.

The initial fire attack was made on the point of origin – Laurienzo’s pizzeria, but the fire spread to two neighboring buildings. As a result, four other business were destroyed. It is still unclear if the units ran short of water early on which may have caused the fire to spread beyond their capability.

Several message boards are starting to fill up with comments from citizens who find it hard to believe that firefighters have to ask permission to use municipal water from hydrants.

UPDATE 05:05AM : A new article from the Frederick News Post posted online two hours ago stated ‘Rescue workers brought water from nearby ponds and firefighters got permission from town officials to use municipal water. In late July, the town adopted water restrictions in response to drought-like conditions in the area since late April. The restrictions target wasteful water use, according to a town newsletter, and will be in effect until Sept. 15.’

EXCLUSIVE PHOTOS: Historic Maryland Town Goes Up In Flames

frontstory-mtairyfire-090207.jpg

FIRE COMPANIES FROM FOUR Maryland counties converged on historic downtown Mt. Airy this morning in order to save the town. 100 firefighters from Frederick, Carrol, Montgomery and Howard counties all worked to bring the fire under control. Fire broke out around 4AM in a Civil War era building that housed a restaurant, pizza parlor, and appartments. Due to the lack of available water volume in the area a tanker shuttle was initiated to fight the blaze. At approximately 11AM, a building collapse of the second story into the streets caused crews to retreat leading to an elevated streams exclusive operation. Demolition equipment was brought in to bring the remaining affected structures to the ground. The town was established in 1830. Even with it’s involvement in the Civil War, the only growth setbacks the town endured were during the previous three ‘great fires’ in 1903, 1914, and 1925. The town rebuilt every time. 081807-8am-dean.gif
HURRICANE DEAN BARRELED ACROSS the eastern Caribbean Saturday and took aim at Hispaniola, Jamaica and Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, with forecasters saying it could turn into a monster Category 5 storm within 72 hours. With sustained winds near 150 mph, Dean left behind floods, debris and at least three deaths on the islands of St. Lucia, Martinique and Dominica on Friday. The first hurricane of the Atlantic season, the Category 4 Dean was expected to gain power as it moves across the warm waters of the Caribbean through the weekend. The National Hurricane Center in Miami said its winds could surpass 155 mph as it approaches the Yucatan Peninsula and the Gulf of Mexico on Monday.

HOT TIP: ‘FAHRENHEIT 451′ Flick Remake In The Works!

Comments Off

FROM MY ENTERTAINMENT BLOG, I received a a HUGE tip last night regarding a classic firefighter movie. From what I hear, Frank Darabont is currently casting for a remake of ‘Fahrenheit 451′. Of course, to make this a wide audience release (and successful) would require over the top casting of Guy Montag – the firefighter lead in the film. There were additional rumors of veteran actors such as Paul Bettany and Matt Damon. A source in Hollywood (in a position to know this sort of thing) is saying TOM HANKS will star as Guy Montag! Can you ask for any better? If I can get better confirmation on this story – we’ll post it here. Stay tuned.

“Harry Potter” Hotel Catches Fire

A HOTEL IN LONDON THAT WAS USED FOR scenes in the Harry Potter films was the scene of another kind today as a fire broke out in the ground floor of the 5-story building.  The 133-yr.-old  building has been closed for massive renovations and is due to re-open in 2009.  It is located directly above the St. Pancras railway station and has caused massive transportation problems in the city.

London’s Air Ambulance Under Threat of Shutdown

Comments Off

LONDON, ENGLAND – A MAJOR CAPITAL CITY – has only one air ambulance service.  It is administered by the remarkably inefficient National Health Service and only 50% funded.  They have relied on cup-rattling contributions to provide the remaining half of the cash needed to operate.

Now they are facing a shortfall and may have to suspend service.  There is naturally an outrage from the citizens because, as the head of their fund-raising campaign puts it:

“The £750,000 that they need this year to keep flying is peanuts compared to what the NHS wastes on management consultants, pay-offs to chief executives and failed computer systems.  What I’d like to see would be a street collection to see if the public would fund pay-offs for some of these people.”

*  A NEW FIRE BLOG HAS JUST been inaugurated that is dedicated to the cause of firefighter safety.  The Firefighter Journal is a creation of Jay Lowry, the operator of FirefighterHourly.com, his brother and several other firefighters who want to pursue things like building collapse and hazardous fireground conditions.  They’re just getting started, but check them out HERE and profit from their expertise.

*  SPEAKING OF FIREFIGHTER HOURLY, Jay has just posted some more controversial photos from the Sofa Super Store fire.  You can expect this to continue as more and more revelations open up.  Now it’s looking like the FD’s training records are mostly fabrications.  Be sure to read the “comments” sections of his postings.  Click HERE and add it to your Bookmarks.

*  OVER THE WEEKEND, FIREGEEZER found an excellent fire blog operated by Bob O’Connor…. CALIFORNIA FIRE NEWS.  I was first made aware of it because of the LODD’s in Contra Costa County the other day.  Bob has an excellent write-up of the event.  However, his primary coverage is dedicated to California’s wildfire activities.  He really is thorough in his coverage.  I have added the site to my Blogroll.  Read him HERE.

Regional Training Academy Opens In Arizona

SEVERAL OF THE SUBURBAN COMMUNITIES AROUND PHOENIX have pooled their resources to build and operate a multi-agency fire academy that will also be used to run integrated recruit classes.

Previously the localities contracted with the Phoenix FD to use its facilities for recruit training.  The initial cost of the project is $44 million with a final outlay of $77 million by 2012.

Read about it in the Arizona Republic HERE.

It looks good on the surface.  What do you think about it?  Do any of you have any experience with multi-jurisdictional recruit schools?

Hurricane Center Releases New Visual Product

Comments Off

A new product was officially made available yesterday from the National Hurricane Center (NHC). The graphical Tropical Weather Outlook (TWO) is an experimental graphic that the NHC is testing and evaluating during the 2007 hurricane season. The experimental Graphical TWO is intended to be a visual companion product to the text TWO. The NHC intends to produce, experimentally during 2007, a graphical TWO twice daily in both the Atlantic and Pacific basins. The graphical TWO can potentially enhance the understanding and utility of the operational text TWO, which discusses areas of disturbed weather and the potential for tropical cyclone development during the next 48 hours. Here’s what it looks like:

We have added both the Atlantic and East Pacific graphical Tropical Weather Outlooks to the 2007 Hurricane Watch page here on Firegeezer.com. Both graphics are at the top of the page with the outlook forecast.

NOAA: La Nina effect on hurricanes absent

Comments Off

Have you been wondering why there has been no mention of hurricane activity so far this year? Part of the answer could be the absence of La Nina.

NOAA announced today that they are predicting La Nina will be absent for the next two months. La Nina is a cooling of Pacific Ocean waters that generally brings a more active Atlantic hurricane season. Dennis Feltgen, a meteorologist for NOAA in Miami stated, “There are so many other ingredients that contribute to the development of tropical cyclones, it’s not just the fact that we don’t have a La Nina that comes into play here,” Feltgen said. 2005 was a good example – there was no La Nina, but Hurricane Katrina still developed along with six other major storms.

Don’t put away the plywood and safety kits yet though. The National Hurricane Center is sticking with their prior prediction of 13 to 17 named storms, with seven to 10 of them becoming hurricanes and three to five of those reaching at least Category 3 strength.

Currently, there is no activity in the Gulf region, Atlantic Ocean or the coast of Africa. There are two tropical depression advisories from the National Hurricane Center for SIX-E and FIVE-E just west of Mexico and south of California.

TECH TIP: Live Hurricane Weather Page

frontstory-hurricane-062607.jpg

A NEW FEATURE we have introduced here on Firegeezer.com is the 2007 Hurricane Watch page. At first glance you may think this isn’t that useful. However, as a Planning Team Instructor and responder for the FEMA US&R Teams I cannot tell you how useful and valuable this collection of information can be. Yeah, some of it is geeky I give you that. This page goes out to all of the top weather sites and pulls in information and displays it on one single, long page. When I respond to a hurricane disaster whether predeployment or after the fact, being able to bring up one single page on a Blackberry or other small portable device while driving over the road is invaluable. No laptop required; No jumping around websites over cellular internet connections; No dealing with full web sites to find different radar images and the latest NOAA tropical forecast; Always updated no matter where the information comes from. This idea was created by about ten other sites and we combined the features we liked from each site and made our own version. We are still testing a few things and cleaning up the display, but it is fully operational and updated 24/7. Your comments and suggestions are greatly appreciated. Check it out HERE and also linked off the main page menu.

Paramedics Are Kidnapped In ‘Believers’ Movie

frontstory-medics-062507.jpg
SERIOUSLY, WHERE DO I FIND these things. Firegeezer wants me to keep up on the entertainment front, but when I find out about movies like this I get pretty nauseous. Try to follow along. Daniel Myrick, best known for his indie hit movie ‘Blair Witch Project’, comes up with a movie so good that it’ll bypass the theaters and head right for DVD! (If Evan Almighty would have it that good). Here’s the synopsis: Two paramedics receive a call from a young girl whose mother went unconscious in a deserted area (can you say stage for PD? Hello?!) Well, they get kidnapped and are locked in some isolated underground bunker along with a secret cult. Obviously, they want to escape since they didn’t think about rule #1 about arriving on the scene of a call – scene safety? Duh. Anyway, if you’re into this sort of thing, check out the strangest paramedic flick EVER – here. Hey, whatever happened to John Gage and Roy DeSoto? ‘Believers’ Homepage

Internet ‘National Day Of Silence’ is Tomorrow

Comments Off
frontstory-dayofsilence.jpg

Tomorrow, if you happen to be an Internet radio listener you may be surprised to find out that the streams will be silent. That’s because thousands of U.S. webcasters plan to turn off the music and go silent Tuesday, June 26 to draw attention to the impending royalty rate increase that, if implemented, would lead to the virtual shutdown of this country’s Internet radio industry. Many listeners don’t realize that terrestrial broadcast music stations don’t pay royalty fees at all, but Internet radio stations do pay royalties to support musicians. Not only do Internet stations pay royalties, the Congress created Copyright Royalty Board has increased the rates effective July 15 making them retroactively enforced back to January 2006. Being a career firefighter and Internet radio broadcaster who is greatly affected by the actions of the Copyright Royalty Board, my two streaming radio stations will be participating in the ‘silence’ via the Live365.com network. I stream my stations as a hobby and don’t make any money doing so – and pay $6,000 annually for the luxury of legally ‘broadcasting’. The new rates will create a retroactive bill of nearly $400,000! To find out more and to contact your Senators and Representatives, head over to the SaveNetRadio Coalition site and the Live365 Internet Radio site.

Charleston Firefighter Deaths “Could Have Been Avoided”, Says Union Official

JUST MINUTES AGO ON FOX NEWS during Studio B with Shepard Smith, Michael Parrotta with the South Carolina Professional Firefighters stated that the mode of attack should have been changed earlier so that the deaths of the firefighters could have been avoided. He was speaking on the decision to change between the quick ‘offensive mode’ and changing to ‘defensive mode’. The interview was at the scene of the tragic fire that killed nine firefighters. Fire investigators as well as the ATF could be seen in the background still working the scene.

Backdraft says: Personally, I find it in very bad taste (and almost disgusting) for a union leader to speak about the tragedy in such a way that questions the tactics and actions of these brave firefighters. There is a time and a place for meaningful discussions, but not less than 24 hours since the disaster occurred! Mr. Parrotta, you should be ashamed for going on national television and speaking negatively on the actions of the fire department. Even Shepard Smith of FOX News had to interrupt you to talk about the fire instead of hearing your political banter. Gee, you think you might want to wait until the investigation is over? I have an idea: instead of getting your political messages delivered in front of the line of television cameras, how about you go take care of the nine families that need the firefighting community more than ever.

A GOLFER KNOCKED HIS BALL into the grass beyond the course he was playing. When he tried to play back to the fairway, his club struck something that created a spark that started the fire. Units from Reno and Sparks responded to the area and were mopping up into the evening with the forestry service standing watch until midnight. No structures were threatened but engines were available for protection. The fire moved northeast with (most) of it in cheatgrass. The fire did not damage any of the holes or practice areas on the course. More on this story HERE

Rescue Me Complete Third Season Available

frontstory-rescuemedvd-061707.jpg

NOW 30% OFF & FREE SHIPPING HERE: The critically praised television drama, Rescue Me, released its complete third season DVD. Comprising of 13 episodes, the DVD coincided with the premiere of its fourth season, which airs Wednesdays on FX. The show is character rather than plot driven, which makes it essential for the viewers to start with season 1. According to reviews, Rescue Me season three is not quite up to the standards of seasons one and two, yet it has featured some exceptional moments. Season 1 began by introducing the members of the firehouse and exploring their lives at work and in their home. Focusing on the lead character Tommy Gavin, it has brought light to his struggle with booze and pills as means of dealing with his guilt and nightmares as a result of the 9/11 tragedy. Eventually, his problems have evolved, as he gets absorbed with his chaotic family life, infidelity, and more emotional problems. The second installment of Rescue Me has featured Tommy and his family reconcile for a time but ends with their son Connor getting killed by a drunk driver. Meanwhile, much of season three has featured Janet’s affair with Johnny and has dealt with Tommy’s continuous battles with his demons, which has gotten more and more out of control. Apart from the 13 episodes, Rescue Me season three DVD also includes many bonus features, along with 14 deleted scenes, an on-set location tour, behind the scenes clips and a short comedy with the main cast members.

“Expect Some Major Deaths” On FX’s Rescue Me

frontstory-rescueme-061707.jpg

THE FX NETWORK’S CRITICALLY-ACCLAIMED drama series, Rescue Me, premiered its fourth season last Wednesday night, with Denis Leary ‘s character, Tommy Gavin, escaping the fiery trap he found himself in during last season’s finale. Other developments in the current season have been revealed by Leary in a feature article he wrote for TVGuide. The article contains general information regarding the fate of the show’s main characters, including Leary’s. He wrote thatt fans can expect some major deaths this year, and told viewers to “keep their eyes open early and late” as the show is “about life and death.” Leary also said that they are trying to make the fourth season better than the previous ones. “We’re trying to outdo ourselves this season. That’s part of the deal. If we want people to keep watching, we don’t want to have one of those seasons like The Sopranos, where people are like, ‘What the hell’s going on?’ It’s good for the audience, and it’s definitely better for us — it keeps our imaginations locked in.” This season, Tommy’s latest love interest is played by actress Jennifer Esposito. According to Leary, Esposito’s character is “a volunteer firefighter on Long Island, a rough-and-ready girl who gives as good as she gets and doesn’t take crap off anybody — including Tommy, so he doesn’t know what to make of her.” Rescue Me airs on FX Network Wednesday nights at 10PM ET.
