Fire Chief Catches Resume Inflation Fever
CLEVELAND, OHIO, FIRE CHIEF DARYL McGINNIS was suspended from his duties Thursday after Mayor Frank Jackson learned that McGinnis had lied on his resume when he applied for the job of fire chief.
Ohio state law requires all EMT's to complete 40 hours of training for their recertification every three years. Following an investigation, the city council learned that McGinnis had only completed 22 hrs. of training yet claimed he had the required number.
Following up, the mayor has ordered a full investigation of every member of the CFD not only on EMT training, but job-qualifying fire training as well. Unfortunately the mayor, perhaps getting caught up in the photo op moment, took a cheap shot at the firefighters by saying, "But the real problem is that this is another example of a culture within the Division of Fire that betrays the public’s trust. The audit we are conducting as a result of this will look at every firefighter’s records to ensure that they are all in compliance."
The IAFF Local responded quickly with the following statement:
"Cleveland’s Fire Fighters take issue with the City’s statement that the Chief’s actions reflect the ‘culture within the Division of Fire’. The true culture of the Division of Fire is this: we are committed to serving our community and protecting life and property. The men and women of the Cleveland Fire Department are in no way responsible for the Chief’s apparent failure to properly maintain his required certifications; just as we are not responsible for his recent statement he would ‘put a knife in Fire Fighters’ necks.’ The Chief, and the Chief alone, is accountable for his own conduct and actions.
The mention of the knife is reference to an incident in June when Chief McGinnis was visiting a station and said words to the effect that he would "take a knife and stab (a firefighter) in the neck" if he violated the duty dress code. The chief received a verbal reprimand from the Cleveland Safety Director. (See the related article in the Cleveland Plain Dealer HERE.)
The fire chief was also reprimanded in May following the criminal indictments of 13 firefighters who were working a shift-trading scam that allowed them to avoid showing up for work at the FD so they could work a second job. (See FossilMedic's Firegeezer REPORT HERE.)
Chief McGinnis, 54, has been with the CFD for 27 years, but was just appointed as fire chief this past January.
