43 Years Down The Drain
The administrator of the Reidville, South Carolina, Fire Department surrendered to the Spartanburg County sheriff yesterday (Thursday) and was charged with breach of trust for embezzling $75,000 from the fire department.
Darlene DeYoung, 64, had been the administrator/bookkeeper of the FD for 43 years. According to a sheriff department statement, the chief of the Reidville Fire Department alerted the Sheriff’s Office to the possibility that DeYoung was stealing money on June 26.
DeYoung was responsible for the books and issuing checks for the fire department, which is a combined department of paid and volunteer staff, where she had worked for 43 years, said her attorney, Steve Denton.
Spartanburg County Sheriff's investigators charged DeYoung with breach of trust greater than $10,000 after they allege she took about $75,000 from the department from Jan. 1, 2010 to June 21, 2013.
It is believed that her husband is a former fire chief of the department.
