It Was Dark Out
A KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI, POLICEMAN was responding to an EMS call early Wednesday morning, looking for "a man down in the street" around 4:35 am. The officer arrived on the scene before the ambulance, but couldn't find the victim. He continued to drive slowly along the road searching for someone, sweeping his spotlight along the roadside grass, but as he came over the crest of a hill his headlights shone above the victim and the patrolman ran over him.
The man apparently was not run over by the patrol car’s tires, but his body was dragged under the middle of the car. The officer who hit him and another officer lifted the car to free the victim and provide initial medical treatment.
Police believe the man was intoxicated. He appeared to suffer mostly road rash and burns from being run over, police said.
The man was dragged about 15 yards at 5 mph. Although his injuries were critical, he was alert and talking to the EMT's.
