More Than $250,000 Damage

AROUND 10:40 AM WEDNESDAY a workman repairing bay doors at the Burgweinting, Germany, fire station accidentally started a fire that burned out most of the attic and a major portion of the station and caused heavy smoke damage throughout the building.

The worker was using a grinder to cut metal parts on the overhead door that sent sparks into the attic catching it on fire.  There were storage areas in the attic and much of the brigade's spare runnng gear was lost.  Firefighting efforts were hampered by the sheet metal roof covering the building.

The trucks and most of the firefighting tools and equipment were taken out of the building by members and neighbors while the fire was burning and were saved.

The 40-yr.-old firehouse was in the final stages of a complete remodeling and refurbishing that was being done voluntarily by the community residents.  Many tears were being shed during the day as they watched all their sweat and labor being burned away.

The Regensburg fire brigade answered the alarm to put out the fire, assisted by units from Harting and Weichs.  The operation was completely finished at 6 pm.  Much of the furnishings were carried out of the building and are being stored in several residents' houses while a farmer, who is also a life member of the volunteer fire brigade, is using his stables for a temporary garage for the apparatus, thus keeping the brigade in service.
