They Didn't Know It Goes "Ka-Boom"?

AN EXPLOSION AND FIRE IN ORANGE COUNTY, California, sent six people to the hospital Friday night with three of them in critical condition.

KABC-TV

The first-in fire units found fire showing when they arrived at the house where 16 people, all family members, had been inside.  Some of them were using a mixture of gasoline and turpentine to clean the floor after removing carpeting and the vapors found their way to pilot light of the water heater.

O. C. Register

The Orange County Register continues:

Two of the burn victims were in life-threatening condition and were taken to UCI Medical Center. Another was in critical condition and three suffered minor burns. The five men and one woman range in age from the mid-20s to mid-50s.

Battalion Chief Kris Concepcion said that some of the patients' burns were worse than they could have been because they did not follow the "stop, drop and roll" procedure when their clothes caught on fire. They ran instead, causing the flames to fan and the burns to intensify.

The Register filed this brief video report:

Mob Riots, Burns London Neighborhood

Arson and Looting Rampant in Tottenham

MatrixPictures

WHAT BEGAN AS A PEACEFUL "PROTEST" was quickly transformed into a riot incited by a criminal element in London, UK, Saturday night.  The trigger for the protest occurred Thursday evening when police pulled over a taxi that was carrying a career criminal who was wanted for arrest.  The criminal, Mark Duggan, 29, apparently pulled out a gun and shot at the police officers who returned fire and killed him.

Saturday evening a group of about 50 friends and relatives of Duggan began a picketing in front of the local police station, but within a few minutes an organized mob of several hundred people converged on the area and began vandalizing, looting and burning many businesses in the area.

Press Association

They targeted the police station, but were repulsed by a cordon of officers and a tight line of police vans around the building.  Several police cars were set ablaze and the mob's attentions turned to buses and private vehicles along with stores that were mainly stocked with goods such as tv's and computers.

The Telegraph posted this video taken during the early moments of the riot:

Tottenham's MP David Lammy was quoted by the press,

"A community that was already hurting has now had its heart ripped out.

"The post office, shops, news agents, mobile phone shops, council building that deal with customer complaints, smashed to pieces by mindless, mindless people last night – many of whom are not from Tottenham and had come from afar into this community intent on causing violence."

Press Association

Sunday morning found the mob disbursed and the fires mostly extinguished.  At latest count, 26 police officers had been injured and 42 people arrested for violent disorder, burglary, and other associated offenses.

Sunday Morning – Let's Go Flying

Are there any model airplane fans out there today?  I have come across the ultimate challenge for you.  In fact, if you like to do any kind of model-making, this ought to stir your curiosity.  The Register, a UK online publication that focuses on information technology and associated advances, published an article Friday that was sent in from the Defcon Hacker Conference in Las Vegas.  The opening paragraphs tip you off as to what's coming:

Hobbyist hackers have built a DIY flying spy drone that's capable of intercepting communications over remote Wi-Fi and cellular networks and beaming them to snoops located half a world away.

Short for wireless aerial surveillance platform, the WASP is equipped with a battery of off-the-shelf hacking tools that can secretly hover over unsuspecting targets and infiltrate their networks. A 4G cellular connection links it to a back-end server that allows operators to control its operations and monitor its sensors in realtime.

Home-building a remote-controlled drone is old hat for the serious hobbyists.  But Mike Tassey and a small group of hacker friends gathered and put together parts that are all over-the-counter items and packed them into their drone which is 76 inches long and made primarily of styrofoam.

The article continues:

It's equipped with a small computer running BackTrack 5, a penetration-testing tool that contains more than 500 separate components for hacking wireless networks, voice-over IP servers and other sensitive systems. It also contains hardware for spoofing GSM base stations that can intercept cellphone conversations of people in the vicinity.

The drone can reach an altitude of 22,000 feet and cost them about $6,200 in parts to build it out.  If you are intrigued by this toy, read the complete article HERE.  And if you want to read the details and specs of the aircraft itself, CLICK HERE to read those over.  It should also be noted that one of their project's goals was to keep it 100% legal all the way.  Their "snooping" is the same as listening to any radio scanner, only more sophisticated.

I am imagining somebody with a small "fleet" of these things selling their services much like a private detective does.  Yikes!

We had better get the equipment checked out now.  It's Sunday, so we want to be ready for the big breakfast.  I'll make sure there's plenty of coffee.  And watch what you say!

Why Not Keep the Beer Truck in the Firehouse?

Comments Off

This One Came Fully Equipped

WHEN THE PORTLAND, OREGON, AIRPORT FIRE DEPARTMENT wanted to sell off their mass casualty unit, the Redmond Fire & Rescue Department jumped at the offer.  The former 1976 Ranier Beer delivery truck fit their needs perfectly at the Redmond Municipal Airport firehouse that they also operate.

KTVZ-TV image

KTVZ-TV reports:  The Port of Portland offered the truck to several airports, and the Eugene Airport turned it down first. "Before they could offer it to somebody else, I bought it and paid $1,200 for it," said Redmond Airport Manager Carrie Novick.

It came with more than $1,200 of back boards, body bags, a generator and other things on board.

Before the vehicle was placed in service, the airport had another that was designed to serve only 37 patients — this one has enough supplies for 100 patients. The truck includes 80 long back boards for spinal immobilization, two fixed power generators to provide lighting and power away from the rig, gloves, oxygen masks, splints, IV fluids and more — a number of items that a normal fire truck couldn't carry.

"I opened my door and there was a wall of smoke, so I knew it was for real."

A MULTI-ALARM FIRE STRUCK A NORMAN, OKLAHOMA, apartment complex Friday afternoon, destroying at least 16 units and damaging several others in three buildings.

Norman Transcript / Phillips

The Norman Transcript reports:  Buildings A, B and J were affected by the blaze, with all 12 units in Building B being total losses, along with an additional four in Building J. Several units in Buildings A and J also suffered severe water damage as firefighters attempted to extinguish the flames. Several cars surrounding the units also were destroyed by the fires.

KFOR-TV Ch. 4 filed this video report that includes some fire footage:

The alarm was sent at 3:44 pm Central and the first-arriving units found fire showing in the 2nd- and 3rd-floor windows as well as the roof of one of the buildings.  Not long after, the fire jumped to the roof of a second building and spread down into it before a full escalated response could get on the scene.  The fire was marked contained at 5:40 pm.

Norman Transcript / Phillips

The outside temperature was 110º and extra precautions were needed to keep the firefighters from getting dehydrated.  The rehab procedures prevented any injuries from the incident.

KOCO-TV Ch. 5 has some aerial video taken after the fire was knocked down that shows the extent of the damage:

It is too early for a determination of the cause, but inspectors believe that it started on one of the upper floors of the building.

Solar Blasts Reach Earth

THE NATIONAL OCEANIC AND ATMOSPHERIC ADMINISTRATION's Space Weather Prediction Center (did you know they had one? …ed.) issued a brief notice yesterday (Friday):

In the wake of the shocked solar wind, G2 (Moderate) Geomagnetic Storm conditions have been seen already, and a warning for G3 (Strong) Storming has been issued. Strong, Prolonged Southward Interplanetary Magnetic Field and fast solar wind continue to fuel the disturbance.

This is a result of two major "solar blasts" that hit the earth's atmosphere Friday with a third one on the way.  The three large explosions on the sun's surface since Tuesday are rolling in like a "magnetic tsunami" and have the potential to disrupt high-frequency radio signals along with satellite data streams including GPS signals.

NOAA x-ray image of solar activity taken on Thursday August 4.

In explaining the potential damage that can be created by a solar storm, Reuters News Agency writes,  The largest solar storm ever recorded was in 1859 when communications infrastructure was limited to telegraphs. The 1859 solar storm hit telegraph offices around the world and caused a giant aurora visible as far south as the Caribbean Islands.

Some telegraph operators reported electric shocks. Papers caught fire. And many telegraph systems continued to send and receive signals even after operators disconnected batteries, NOAA said on its website.  However, these recent storms are not expected to be anywhere near that intense as they are rated as Class 2 on a scale of 1 to 5 in the solar storm measuring system.

Further explaining what's going on, The National Geographic tells:

A solar storm is a flurry of charged particles that erupts from the sun. Under the right conditions, solar storms can create extra electrical currents in Earth's magnetosphere—the region around the planet controlled by our magnetic field.  The electrical power grid is particularly vulnerable to these extra currents, which can infiltrate high-voltage transmission lines, causing transformers to overheat and possibly burn out.

"The concern is if the electric grid lost a number of transformers during a single storm, replacing them would be difficult and time-consuming," said Rich Lordan, senior technical executive for power delivery and utilization at the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI).  "These power transformers are very big devices, and the lead time to get a replacement can be two months—if there's a spare one stored nearby. If a utility has to order a new one from the manufacturer, it could take six months to up to two years to deliver."

The danger is becoming more critical, as the sun is approaching what's known as solar maximum—the high point in its roughly 11-year cycle of activity. Scientists anticipate stronger storms around solar max, in 2013.  Scientists expect this type of activity to increase in frequency for about two or three more years.  So maybe you want to keep those paper maps around for a while longer, yet.

Saturday Morning – Spam, Spam, Spam, Spam…. (Monty Python)

One of the major spammers that has plagued Facebook members has finally been pulled off the street.  Sanford Wallace of Las Vegas, Nevada, surrendered to FBI agents Thursday and on Friday he was arraigned before a Federal judge where he pleaded not guilty to nine counts of e-mail fraud, computer damage, and criminal contempt.

Sanford, who proudly calls himself "Spam King," was indicted by a grand jury in Las Vegas on July 6 for allegedly sending 27 million spam messages to Facebook users.  The contempt charges are a result of his flagrant disregard of prior court orders to cease the practice.  In November of 2009 we posted an article HERE about Wallace and his failure to appear before a U. S. District Court to answer a civil complaint filed by Facebook:

Judge Jeremy Fogel of the U.S. District Court of the Northern District of California granted Facebook’s application for a default judgment against Sanford Wallace ( for $711 million….ed.) for violating the Can-Spam Act, which bans “false and misleading” marketing e-mails. Fogel also found that Wallace “willfully violated” a temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction issued in the case and referred the matter to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for prosecution of criminal contempt.

Wallace had operated a major “phishing” scam using Facebook members’ addresses to send out millions of spam mails. He has also had several other multi-million-dollar judgements issued against him from other web operators. His failure to pay his judgements and his continued practice of continuing to behave this way is probably why the “criminal contempt” charge has been referred.

Sanford "Spamford" Wallace

The indictment claimed that Wallace accessed 500,000 Facebook accounts in 2008 and 2009 while running a "phishing" scheme to trick people into giving him their passwords.  This past September 2, I explained in Lineup HERE how this works and if you read it you will recognize the tactics because you have probably been targeted yourself.

As part of the summary judgement against him in 2009 was an order to never access the Facebook computer again.  His contemptuous refusal to obey that directive will weigh heavily on any sentence issued by the court.  He faces up to three years in jail and a $250,000 fine for each of the six fraud charges and up to 10 years in jail for each of the three charges of intentional damage to a protected computer.  The Telegraph (UK) has more details on this week's court action HERE.

We'd better log off now and get the equipment checked out.  I definitely need some more coffee, so I'll get that started.  See you back in the day room.

Some More Stories From the News Ticker

SAD NEWS FROM KUWAIT where an American contract firefighter was killed Wednesday when a fuel tanker hit his car while he was on his way to work.  Ben Davine, 27, of Hampstead, New Hampshire was an air force veteran who went to work for the fire protection contractor 4 years ago after he was discharged from the military.  WMUR-TV has the story HERE.

TALK ABOUT A HIGH-ANGLE RESCUE!  A man in Texas was taken ill while he was working on a communications tower….. 760 feet above the ground.  He was slipping in and out of consciousness and completely unable to help himself.  STATter911 has the story plus videos on how the Burleson firefighters got him down HERE.  A terrific job done.

ELDERLY COUPLE INJURED IN NUDIST WATER SCOOTER CRASH.  A man and a woman, both age 62, were injured last Saturday night at the Cypress Cove Nudist Resort in Osceola County, Florida.  They were riding a water scooter (wearing only their birthday suits, of course) and they slammed into a seawall while going approx. 40 mph.  The man was the most severely injured receiving two broken arms and a cut on his head.  The Orlando Sentinel has the story HERE.

FIRE IN THE FIREHOUSE in Mountain City, Tennessee, Thursday morning.  The 2nd District VFD lost their fire station and their three trucks when a fire started during the night in the unattended station.  It is believed that the fire started because of an electrical short in the tanker.

The guilty tanker.  (WCYB-TV)

Most of the loss is covered by insurance, but they literally lost everything and will have to completely rebuild.  The members say that it could have been worse.  There is a propane tank just a few feet away from the building and their fireworks stand is also close by.

UPDATED: Jerry Lewis “Completes Run” (ousted) as MDA National Chairman

It's official but carries some drama

TUCSON, Ariz., Aug. 3, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/–

The Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) announces that today Jerry Lewis has completed his run as its national chairman. In May, Lewis and MDA announced his retirement as host of the MDA Labor Day Telethon.

MDA Chairman of the Board of Directors, R. Rodney Howell, M.D., said, “Jerry Lewis is a world-class humanitarian and we’re forever grateful to him for his more than half century of generous service to MDA.

We will not be replacing him as MDA national chairman, and he will not be appearing on the Telethon.”

Lewis, MDA mum on reasons for comedian's exit

Today's Associated Press article indicates that the decision may have not been mutual.

In May, Lewis said in a statement issued through the association that he would make his final appearance on the telethon this year and sing "You'll Never Walk Alone" during a six-hour primetime broadcast scheduled for Sept. 4.

But during a session with reporters last week at a Television Critics Association press tour to promote an upcoming TV documentary, "Method to the Madness of Jerry Lewis," Lewis hinted that his involvement in raising money for muscular dystrophy research wasn't finished.

more HERE

Wonder if this fall's documentary from Starz/Encore was an issue?

From the press release:

For the first time in history, Jerry has granted us exclusive rights to document the behind the scenes operations of this massive television/multimedia event.

We captured everything from pre-production to the final tote board tally.

This amazing footage reveals that his tireless efforts are a year round job, and not simply showing up to host this enormous variety show.

We also see Jerry's meticulous production meetings, his outrageously funny performance rehearsals, and countless hysterical candid moments unlike anything that has ever been seen of Jerry before.

In addition, we were also privileged to capture many heartfelt moments revealing how much "Jerry's kid's" really mean to him.

Read more HERE

Mary Elizabeth Williams, writing in Salon.com yesterday, makes another point:

Times have changed. There are other ways to use charity to fight disease now.

There are even more efficient ones, one that couldn't have been remotely imagined when Lewis donned a tux and picked up the microphone all those years ago.

But there will never be another combination of schmaltz and sincerity of its kind again. And the word "telethon" without the words "Jerry Lewis" in front — it's like "New Year's" without "Dick Clark."

Inevitable? Yes. Hard to get used to? Absolutely.

What's Labor Day without Jerry Lewis?

We will never walk alone.

Edited to add:

from Steven Zeitchik and Deborah Vankin in today's Los Angeles Times: Jerry Lewis ousted as MDA telethon host

"It's probably time for him to retire," Tom Arnold said. "But he should get to say goodbye.

"If they'd promoted this as Jerry Lewis' final telethon they could've gotten guys like George Clooney, which would've opened the door to God knows who. It would've been a big deal, and showbiz loves big deals."

Was Involved in Two Set Fires in Planes While in Flight

EDER ROJAS, NOW AGE 22, has been arrested in Mexico and returned to the U. S. three years after he failed to appear for his trial for setting fire inside an airplane.  The former flight attendant was employed by Compass Airlines, a Northwest Air subsidiary, and was reportedly angry for being assigned to the Minneapolis-to-Regina (Sask.) route when he set a roll of paper towels on fire in the bathroom while the plane was aloft.

NWA stock photo of Compass Airliner

Read the Firegeezer reports on the fire and the fugitive flight attendant's fleeing in May 2008, HERE, HERE, and HERE.

During his initial arraignment three years ago the prosecutor disclosed that Rojas was on another flight five weeks previously where a similar fire occurred in the lavatory while in flight, but he was never charged for that fire.

After unrelenting searching, the FBI and the U. S. Marshals Service located him in Iguala, Guerrero, Mexico and had him arrested on March 26 of this year.  The marshals returned with him this past Wednesday and took him to Fargo, North Dakota where he had been scheduled for trial.  The crime is being tried in Fargo because that is where the plane made its emergency landing following the fire onboard.

Rojas faces the possibility of 20 years in prison on the arson charge and another 10 years for the failure to appear violation.

"High Impact" Crash on Country Road

A NEWBERG FIRE DEPARTMENT (Oregon) ambulance crashed nearly head-on with an oncoming minivan near Beaverton, Oregon, Thursday afternoon.  The ambulance was transporting an emergency patient to the hospital when a van approached from the other direction at a high rate of speed and drifted over the center line around 2:30 pm.  The Beaverton Valley Times explains what happened:

The preliminary investigation showed that the ambulance was traveling east on Southwest Scholls Ferry Road approaching Southwest Barrows Road," Thompson said. "The minivan was traveling west at a high rate of speed.

"Witnesses reported that she blew through the red light at Southwest Barrows Road. Mrs. Caulfield then drifted into the eastbound lane and was on a collision course for a head-on crash with the ambulance." (The ambulance driver) reportedly saw the approaching vehicle and made a quick maneuver by steering left into the center median, avoiding the head-on collision, he added.

KPTV

Caulfield's van struck the ambulance on the passenger side just behind the passenger door. The impact caused massive damage to the rear compartment of the ambulance and tore a gaping hole in the side of it. The force of the crash pushed the ambulance across four lanes of traffic and off the side of the road. The minivan was badly damaged in the collision and came to rest on the south side of the road.

The ambulance is in the lower left of the photo and
the minivan ended up in the upper right near the large bush.  (KPTV)

The two paramedics ages 26 and 39, were transported and released later Thursday night.  Their patient, a 90-yr.-old lady with a broken hip received only minor injuries from the wreck.  The driver of the minivan, a 51-yr.-old woman, needed to be extricated and is in critical condition.

Arkansas Grass Fire Takes Out More Than 100 Buildings

Vacated Army Base From WW II

A GRASS FIRE IN FORT SMITH, ARKANSAS, swept into what was the hospital center for the Fort Chaffee Army Post Wednesday night and consumed approximately 110 long-vacated buildings that made up the 80-acre medical complex.  The entire post had been abandoned by the U. S. Army more than 20 years ago, but the Arkansas National Guard has been using it for training exercises since then.

Fort Smith Times Record

The fire blew up Wednesday night about 10 pm and winds swept it into the collection of old, wooden buildings where the firefighters could not get enough water to control it.  In the middle of the night it was decided to forego trying to save the buildings and instead set backfires to meet the fire line and get it under control.  That action subsequently led to the total destruction.  One official estimates that only one of the 120 buildings will have survived the fire.

KFSM-TV posted this raw video of the main hospital building burning:

Reuters posted some historical notes on the former base:

Fort Chaffee possesses a rich history with many movies, including "Biloxi Blues," filmed on the property. It is best known in popular culture as the site where Elvis Presley entered the Army in 1958 and had his hair shorn in a crew cut.

The government began Camp Chaffee in 1941, paying $1.35 million to acquire the land. The first soldiers arrived on December 7, 1941 – Pearl Harbor Day. It served as a training camp as well as a German prisoner-of-war camp.

Fort Chaffee was a processing center for refugees from the Vietnam War in the mid-1970s. It has also housed Cuban refugees and Hurricane Katrina evacuees, but many of the buildings that housed them burned in 2008.

"The hospital … was a structural record of what military medical care here used to be like," Fort Smith Convention and Visitors Bureau Executive Director Claude Legris told Reuters.

"Although that part of the complex had not been renovated, it's difficult when a natural disaster such as this one eliminates future restoration as an option."

The medical complex had also become a popular spot with paranormal enthusiasts in recent years, with some ghost hunters visiting the hospital every weekend.

The fire was started accidentally Wednesday afternoon by National Guard troops who were training with weapons.

KFSM-TV has a video report on the fire that includes some good fire footage:

Job Stress Helps Chief Decide to Leave

RIO RANCHO, NEW MEXICO, FIRE CHIEF James Tobin resigned Wednesday citing health problems caused by employee disciplinary actions and the backlash from them.  The Albuquerque Journal reports that,

(Tobin) said friction from a hazing incident that occurred in May was too much to bear and made his blood pressure rise so significantly his doctor advised him go on medical leave.

A city news release issued on June 14 said an investigation into the hazing incident had been concluded and that five employees had been disciplined. The investigation, which began in mid-May, found that five male employees engaged in the "continuous harassment" of a new male employee regarding the "size of his genitalia."

A Shock of Recognition

Another explotation of immigrants

Skimming the Chronicles of Higher Education website last week I was surprised to see a photo from a business district I had to memorize as a rookie firefighter/EMT.

Welcome to Beautiful Downtown Annandale

The view from the front ramp of Fire Station 8 is a patchwork of commerical and retail buildings surrounding an intersection of five roads.

Matching street address to business name

Captain W. would yell at us when Rescue 8 (ambulance) would scream out of the fire station, make a hard left … and then have to make a U-turn because the incident location is "over there."

In those prehistoric days, I contributed to a hand-drawn map that showed the central business district.  Every building with street addresses and business names. Many were more easily accessable from the ocean of asphalt parking spaces surrounding the buildings.

In the late 1970's noticed about a 30% annual turnover in commercial and retail occupancies.  By 1990 there were about 100 Korean-focused stores, restaurants and clubs in the greater Annandale business district.

The Chelation Incidents

I was special-called as an EMS Supervisor to the east end of the business district. Medic 8 was working a troublesome situation.

An older Indian person who appeared very ill was laying on a bench outside a second floor allopathic and nutritional clinic. The clinic specialized in EDTA chelation therapy. I also observed signage promoting Ozone therapy.

No one would speak English and none of us were conversant in Korean or Standard Hindi. It appeared that the clinic was closing for the day and this patient was removed from the office. An unidentified party called 9-1-1.

Medic 8's crew had called for an EMS Supervisor because this was the third or fourth time they encountered a patient apparently dumped outside the clinic.

Clinics dumping patients on EMS at closing time is not new, but the circumstances with this clinic left me uncomfortable. There was no patient information or transfer paperwork. The clinic went to great effort not to speak with the paramedics. Discovered that the 9-1-1 call was traced to the clinic's phone number.

Discomfort grew as I got inside the clinic and noted the dirty and unkempt condition of the patient care areas.

A Korean fluent police officer arrived. Long after Medic 8 cleared the hospital, I was still working with police and health department representatives. We appeared to have a multicultural incident:

The owner of the clinic had an earned PhD while serving in the US military as a warrior and later a researcher. His 1958 thesis covered altering bacterial endotoxins.

After leaving the service he obtained a medical degree from the Open University for Complimentary Medicine in Sri Lanka. Would you be surprised that OUCM is not a recognized or accredited medical school?

The other physician was trained in the Republic of India.

Four years after that incident the corporation lost it's laboratory permit from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services because of:

  • Condition level non-compliance causing immediate and serious threat to the health and safety of patients.
  • Failure to correct deficiencies.
  • Failure to submit an acceptable plan of correction and failure to comply with a Directed Portion of a Plan.

Losing the permit means Medicare will not pay for services. A year before Medic 8's incident, the American owner was found guilty of mail fraud and closed down his first Annandale clinic.

By advocating for these patients, and documenting what they observed, the crews of Medic 8 facilitated to the closing of a bogus clinic.

A Naturally Occuring Immigrant Center

The Annandale business district had 929 Korean-focused businesses in 2005.

According to David Cho, in this March 14, 2005, Washington Post article, the stores represent about one-third of all the Washington area Korean businesses. 'Koreatown' Image Divides A Changing Annandale

Liz Farmer, writing in a July 21, 2011, Washington Examiner article, points out that the Korean population has increased 50% since 2001 and the Indian population has increased 71%.  Koreans, Indians lead Northern Virginia's Asian population boom

University of Northern Virginia

On the west end of the Annandale business district, a for-profit university catering to Indian students was raided by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security last week.  About 2000 foreign students were enrolled in UNVA and residing in the United States on student visas.

They are working in New York, Ohio and elsewhere, returning to Annandale one weekend a month to study business administration or computer science.  Many are working in the three Super Q Mart International Food grocery stores owned by Daniel Ho, who is also the UNVA founder and majority owner.

Tom Bartlett, Karin Fischer, and Josh Keller published the results of their investigation into unaccredited schools catering to foreign students and exploiting loopholes in the post 9/11 visa process.  Little-Known Colleges Exploit Visa Loopholes to Make Millions Off Foreign Students was published March 20, 2011 in The Chronicles of Higher Education and UNVA was one of the featured schools.

Last week the other shoe dropped.  Bartlett, Fisher and Keller reported: Federal Agents Raid Virginia Institution That Draws Many Students From India on July 29.

Language and Culture may mask target hazards

When I worked as a fire inspector in the same neighborhood, I would find owners living in their store. It was their only home.

That certainly added to the risk-reward equation when rolling up on a strip shopping center with smoke coming from the jeweler's store!

Would stumble across religious services and multi-level marketing seminars held in spaces too small or unsafe for an assembly. Often in places never considered for such use, like the service department break room at a car dealership.

Raves in out-of-the way commercial structures. Unaccredited assisted living or day care facilities in residences.

The attaining of the American Dream is different for everyone. In some cases it creates hazards or harm to others. Other times it just exploits desire and aspiration.

Wonder how valuable it would be to learn more about our new neighbors before showing up on the Big Red Truck on a 9-1-1 initiated event?

A couple of days ago I was talking (HERE) about the latest listing of stolen cars according to "popularity," or rather which ones are most-sought after by the thieves.  The information came from an organization called the Highway Loss Data Institute which is coupled with the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.  Over the years we have all heard of these outfits, mainly through press releases such as the one we talked about earlier, but if you're like me, you probably never fully understood just who they are.

Many people think -rightly – that they have something to do with the auto insurance companies, so out of curiosity I looked them up.  The entry page for their website is HERE and on it they describe themselves:

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety is an independent, nonprofit, scientific, and educational organization dedicated to reducing the losses — deaths, injuries, and property damage — from crashes on the nation's highways.

The Highway Loss Data Institute shares and supports this mission through scientific studies of insurance data representing the human and economic losses resulting from the ownership and operation of different types of vehicles and by publishing insurance loss results by vehicle make and model.

Then they provide the LINK to a rather lengthy list of all the insurance companies that together fully fund this operation.  The IIHS had its beginnings in 1959 when three major insurance companies banded together to promote better highway safety efforts, then in 1969 the organization was changed to become an independent research group and since then they have been doing most of the crash-test research.  Their goal is to lower life and property loss by having cars built better and able to withstand crashes and become less likely to be in accidents.

They have been successful at it because, they claim, the number of people killed on the nation's roads has been falling since 1979, even as the population and the number of miles driven have been climbing. Much of this improvement is a result of vehicles becoming safer.  In addition, they have been promoting seat-belt laws and better licensing procedures.  In 1992 they moved into a modern, scientific test facility in Ruckersville, Virginia, where they carry out extensive crash testing on outside pavement, inside laboratories and test sled impacts.  I recommend that you take a few minutes to look around their WEBPAGE HERE for the Vehicle Research Center and see what all they're involved with.  It's enlightening.

View more crash-test videos HERE.

Now let's enlighten ourselves with the status of our equipment and get it checked out for today.  I'm going to start some more coffee before we meet back in the day room.

I'll Take the "Boot and Tow"

Let’s here it for Vilnius, Lithuania, Mayor Arturas Zuokas and his new campaign to discourage illegal parking in the city’s bicycle lanes.

Hizzoner, da' Mayor

Do you (secretly) pine nostalgically for the heady days of the former USSR when muscular militarism was all the rage?

Have you ever lusted to be at the controls of an armored vehicle?

Had to swerve your bike to miss a parked car in the bike lane?

If the answer is yes to any or all—then enjoy this video courtesy of The Guardian (UK):

"Mayor Zuokas wanted his message to be loud and clear that the city will not tolerate brazen and disrespectful behaviour by drivers who disobey parking rules," said his spokeswoman, Irma Juskenaite.

"The mayor hopes that he will not have to repeat his performance to have drivers heed his message, although he says that he is prepared to do so," she added, with a smile.

The mayor cleans up the mess of crushed glass at the end of the video, before riding away on a bike.

The car, Juskenaite added, was bought specifically for the stunt.

Fork Lift Tines Had to Be Removed

Update, 1:45 pm Eastern:
We have just learned that both women have been taken off the critical list.  An amazing set of circumstances.

A BIZARRE VEHICLE ACCIDENT WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON in Westerkappeln, Germany, presented a daunting challenge to the local fire brigade and the hospital surgeons as well.  During a heavy rain, a woman was making a turn and was unable to see a forklift truck's tines just before she turned into the machine.  The two "forks" penetrated the side of the car and one of them went through the 48-yr.-old driver and pinned her 19-yr.-old daughter inside the car.

NOZ / Meyer photo

As the firefighters began taking the car apart, an emergency room doctor was brought to the scene and he stabilized both passengers who had remained conscious the entire time.  First the daughter was freed from the car and immediately flown to the hospital.

Freeing the driver who was impaled on the tine took more than an hour as the firefighters removed the metal bar from the forklift and then extricated the woman with the tine that made a full penetration and exit point still in her.  She was then flown to a special clinic in Munster for emergency surgery.

The 49-yr.-old forklift operator was himself in heavy shock and had to be hospitalized also.

A brief video report can be viewed HERE.

The Neue Osnabrucker Zeitung has the STORY.

Note:  If you look at the photo carefully you will see that the tines of this forklift are shaped more like a spear and smaller diameter than the heavy flat bars that we usually find on forklifts.

ALSO IN THE PHILADELPHIA AREA, a former high school that has been vacant for 12 years caught on fire Wednesday morning and was escalated to four alarms before it was put out.  No longer owned by the city, it had been described by city officials as a major fire hazard three years ago, but the city did nothing about it.

Eight master streams were deployed to contain the fire in the built-up neighborhood and TV channel 10 filed this raw video taken from their helicopter:

Morning Lineup – August 4

Thursday Morning and a Day Late

Firegeezer messed up yesterday by not letting you know ahead of time about last night's Firefighter Netcast.  I had the information, but got distracted by several other things going on at the same time, and I have to apologize to you and to the Netcast crew.  But fortunately, all of their netcasts are archived and you can tap in anytime to replay the program.

On this very special Firefighter Netcast show, John Mitchell welcomed back Jeff Dill, a Battalion Chief of the Palatine Rural Fire Protection District in Inverness (IL) and retired Hinsdale (IL) Fire Chief Pat Kenny for an intensely personal discussion on firefighter suicides and mental health.

B/C Dill is a nationally recognized authority on behavioral health issues within the fire service. He established Counseling Services for Fire Fighters, LLC based on the tragic events that surrounded Hurricane Katrina. When speaking with firefighters who returned after serving the community of New Orleans, Jeff heard the pleas of firefighters who had a difficult time talking with counselors who did not have any firefighting experience. They became frustrated and never did seek the help they needed.

Joining Chief Dill was a very special guest- retired Fire Chief Patrick Kenny of the Hinsdale (IL) Fire Department. Chief Kenny is the Assistant Executive Director of the Illinois Fire Chiefs Association and a representative at the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation Seminar on Depression and Suicide.

Tragically, in 2006, Chief Kenny lost his son Sean to suicide. He reflected on the obstacles and challenges he faced as a father as well as a chief officer during his personal nightmare. Since then, Chief Kenny has travelled across the nation and around the world sharing his intensely personal story and promoting advocacy of mental health awareness in the fire service and beyond.

So mark THIS LINK to replay and listen to this unique discussion of a timely topic of the fire/EMS service that you will only hear on Firefighter Netcast.  Believe me, it's worth it.

Now let's get ready for the day and get this equipment checked out.  I need to fix some more coffee before we meet back in the day room.

Firefighters Roundup Rampant Llama

Comments Off

Crazed Critter Nearly Kills Two

A PET LLAMA ATTACKED ITS TWO owners Monday night in Comblessac, France, and caused serious injuries to both of them.  The animal first attacked the man, age 59, who had the mammal for three years, and broke his shoulder.  It then crashed through the enclosure and charged the 67-yr.-old woman, knocking her into a ditch and causing several fractures and head injuries.

A neighbor grabbed a large stick and beat off the llama from further attacking the helpless woman and pushed it back as firefighters arrived.  One of the firefighters is a trained animal control specialist and brought a tranquilizer gun to the scene.  After the firefighters chased down the creature and injected two loads of anesthesia into it, it went down and a veterinarian euthanized the llama on the site.
