Morning Lineup – April 9

We're Talkin' Hockey Here….

Every year the regular season of the National Hockey League comes right down to the final week before all the playoff slots and pairings are decided, making for an exciting time for the fans.  But this year is something else again.  With one game left in the season, there are still teams vying for position and who advances and who doesn't will not be settled until Sunday evening.  Note for the casual observer:  The top eight teams in each conference, East and West, advance to the playoffs and the first-round matchups are 1 vs. 8, 2-7, 3-6, and 4-5.

Every team in the league plays their final game either today or tomorrow, so let's look at where they're sitting this morning:

The Western conference has been dominated all season by that juggernaut called Vancouver who handily cruised along at first place almost the entire season.  San Jose gave them a good chase for a while but have been fairly comfortable in 2nd place …… until now.  If they drop their final game and Detroit wins theirs, then they will swap positions on the final day.  Both teams have lost their last two games, so they are controlling their own destinies.

It was only 3 weeks ago that there were only 6 points separating the 4th through the 11th positions in the Western standings, making every game count.  But Minnesota went into a swoon and fell out of contention.  Dallas also muffed their chance to clinch a spot but they still have a slight chance to get in providing they win their remaining game against Minnesota tomorrow and Chicago loses to the hot Detroit team.  Dallas tops Chi. in the tie-breaker if they both finish with 97 points.

But how about the battle for position?  Nashville could drop from 4th to 8th if they lose their game and one of the others below them wins.  If they lose, not only Chicago, but every other team can potentially jump up to 4th and grab the home-ice slot for the playoff rounds.  If you're a confirmed hockey fan, then you are in luck.  Sunday's tv network game on NBC is the Chicago – Detroit matchup.  That is going to be a good one.  They both need a win, especially Chicago (the defending champs.).

Over in the Eastern conference, most of the dramatics took place during the past two days.  After riding on top for a couple of months, Philadelphia lost their composure, winning only 2 of their last 10 games, and let Washington climb over them into 1st earlier this week.  Philly's overtime loss to Buffalo last night clinched the Caps' first-place finish.  In fact, Pittsburgh can still take away the Atlantic Division lead from Philly and leap to 2nd place if they win and the Flyers continue their losing ways this weekend.  This will be a nail-biter for all Pennsylvanians.

Speaking of Buffalo, they have been hot lately, winning 7 of their last 10 they have come from "out of the playoffs" to 7th and can overtake Montreal with a win coupled with a Montreal loss.  If the two teams remain tied, Montreal wins the tie-breaker.  The big, hot finishers this week is Carolina, though.  They have surged into the playoffs suddenly by winning 8 of their last 10 and the New York Rangers loss to lowly Atlanta Thursday night has dropped them out of the playoffs after spending most of the season comfortably in the top eight.  The Rangers play New Jersey in a matinee game today and if they win, then Carolina will have to win tonight's game against Tampa to stay in #8.  Carolina edges the Rangers in the tie-breaker.

After playing 81 games, almost every team in the league is still in a position to affect the standings on the final game of the season.  It doesn't get any better than that.

Now let's affect our own standings and get this equipment checked out.  I need some more coffee.  See you back in the day room later.

The Smoke Never Smelled Better

A HIGH-FASHION PERFUME SHOP IN BRUSSELS, BELGIUM, suffered a heavy fire loss Thursday.  The trendy shop, Paris XL Parfumerie is located on the Boulevard Anspach next to the Brussels Bourse (Stock Exchange) and on Thursday morning around 8 am people noticed smoke and flames coming from a 4th-floor window.

The fire brigade was on the scene rapidly with several engines and evacuated 13 people from nearby residences.  There was nobody in the store at the time of the fire.

The fire was contained and extinguished easily, but the amount of damage was "considerable."  Investigators still have not determined the cause.

Worst Auto Wreck Ever in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern

AN EXTREMELY RARE SANDSTORM blew over Northern Germany Friday and led to one of the worst chain reaction crashes ever on a major freeway.  As the cloud of sand and dust swept across the highway, dozens of cars in both directions started crashing into each other with one pileup starting a fire from leaking gasoline.

all photos via DPA

When it was over, there were more than 40 autos and trucks completely wrecked with 17 cars and 3 trucks burned up.

At latest count, there were 10 people dead and 97 injured.  Most of the deaths were people entrapped in their cars who could not escape the growing fire.  Between 25 and 30 of the injured required hospitalization.

This has been adjudged to be the worst highway accident ever in the State of Mecklenburg -Vorpommern.  Experienced police officers said that it is the worst that they have seen.

The rare sandstorm was caused by a combination of a prolonged dry spell, high winds, and freshly-plowed fields.

The following videos graphically display the extreme conditions that the rescuers were working under:

Car Traveling in Oncoming Lanes

A PRIVATE AMBULANCE operated by Eagle Transports out of Newport News, Virginia, was returning to quarters from a Norfolk hospital when a car traveling the wrong way on the divided highway struck them head-on.

WVEC-TV

The crash took place just before midnight Friday morning in Portsmouth.  The car's driver was the only passenger and he somehow got onto the wrong traffic lanes where he smashed into the ambulance.  The two medics were both injured, but are expected to recover.  The extent of their injuries has not been reported.

The driver of the car is in critical condition and has not been able to make any statement to the police.  However they say that he will have charges placed against him.

Massive Plastics Plant Fire in Czech Republic

Expected to Burn For Days

all photos via iDNES.cz

A MAJOR FIRE IN A PLASTICS FACTORY IN CHROPYNE, Czech Republic, broke out early Friday morning.  The four-story plant is located on the edge of town and the voluminous, toxic smoke has led to a wide-scale evacuation of residents in the area.

The fire has spread to several other buildings in the factory complex.

More than 100 firefighters are on the scene, but a fire department spokesman has already announced that it may take several days to bring the fire under control.  Persistent strong winds are acting against extinguishment efforts.

There is no information yet on what caused the fire.

Friday Morning Lineup

It is just a little over three months until the Firehouse Expo 2011 begins in Baltimore on July 18.  Once again Firegeezer will be there on the exhibit floor that is open on the last three days of the Expo, July 21 thru 23.  We will continue our partnership with STATter911 and for the 2nd year you will also meet the Firefighter Netcast crew who will be recording shows and interviews from the exhibit hall floor in the Firegeezer booth.

We just recently received the floor plan that lists all of the exhibitors of the booths that have been signed up so far, and there are very few spaces left.  So it looks like a good show is in the works for you.  But I went over the list looking for apparatus manufacturers to see which ones will be displaying their trucks on the floor and if you're a regular Firegeezer reader, then you won't be surprised to see that several of the "smaller" firetruck builders will be there.  Going down the list of exhibitors, I compiled the names of the apparatus builders/dealers from what I spotted (not an official listing) that WILL be there:

Rosenbauer ……. Spartan …… Crimson
KME …… Pierce …… Darley
Four Guys …… Marion Body Works
SVI Trucks ……Toyne …… Ferrara
Sutphen …… PL Custom Emergency Vehicles

Just as interesting is a list of builders who are NOT signed up for display space:

E-One …… American LaFrance …… Seagrave

The times, they are a'changin'.

One thing that doesn't change is the daily equipment check, so we'd better get started with that now.  I'm going to make sure that we have plenty of coffee for when we get back to the day room.

Thursday Evening News Hot Off the Ticker

A LARGE GRASS FIRE in Spencer, Oklahoma, has burned for more than 24 hours and consumed thousands of acres.  It was contained once, but the steady, strong seasonal winds rekindled it and it took off again.  One firefighter suffered an electrical shock when he came in contact with a power line and had to be hospitalized.

KOCO-TV has the story along with several video reports on this tenacious fire.  CLICK HERE to view them.

A MICHIGAN STATE TROOPER who also worked part-time as a paramedic in the Saginaw area died early Wednesday morning when his cruiser rolled.  He was responding to assist a sheriff's deputy on a chase when the accident occurred.  The 9&10 TV News channel has the details HERE.
Thanks to Ralph C.

BUILDING CONSTRUCTION CLASS will be getting still more complicated in the future.  A professor at M.I.T. is developing a heavy-duty printer that will print shapes and designs on thin layers of concrete, wood, and other durable materials, including metals, that will be layered into construction units for prefabricated structures.  It seems a little far-out now, but it will be close-in before too long.  The MIT Technology Review has an article describing it HERE.  Wayne K. pointed me to this article, but I had to read it twice to get a mental grip on what's going on.

IN KLAMATH FALLS, AN OREGON STATE Trooper stopped a car late Tuesday night for suspicious behavior.  When the trooper approached the car he saw the driver pour some sort of flammable liquid around the interior and then on himself.  As he attempted to use a cigarette light to ignite the car and himself, the officer dragged him out of the car and snuffed the small fire on the weirdo's clothing.

The fire department responded to make sure the small fire inside the car was completely out and then it was discovered what the guy was trying to get rid of.

The scorched suitcase did its job and protected the 30 lbs. of marijuana that wasn't ready to be smoked yet.  KATU-TV tells the story and what happened to Dummy HERE.

A FORMER D. C. FIREFIGHTER who was kept quietly on the payroll for over four years even though it was discovered that she had defrauded the city out of thousands of dollars, was sentenced to 7 days in jail this week.  The reason for the long delay while she collected over $200,000 in wages while on administrative leave seems to have been a move to protect some higher-ups who would be implicated in the scheme if it were investigated properly.  WTTG-TV has the story HERE on this week's sentencing, and a more detailed article and video report from December on the details HERE.

Then they joined up with a group of FDNY guys for a long procession to Long Island and ending up at Plainview.

After arriving in Plainview they had some time to share the Code 3 message and then a giant BBQ.  Man those guys can cook.

The next morning Lorenzo started the long hop to Knoxville, Tennesse, with a stopover in Fairfax County, Virginia, to meet with Firegeezer guys at Fire Station 411.  That visit was POSTED HERE the other day.  Then it was on to Tennessee, North Carolina, and Georgia.  Stay tuned.

Fire Photographer Assaulted

"This is not a circus!"

THE OFFICIAL FIRE DEPARTMENT PHOTOGRAPHER for the Uxbridge Fire/EMS Department in Massachusetts was physically assaulted Thursday morning while at a fire.  James Ahern was documenting a barn fire that Uxbridge and two other FD's were working shortly after 11 am when an unidentified man came charging after him, yelling and demanding that he get off the property.  Ahern had official ID and told the man who he was, but the angry observer just kept on with his tantrum demanding that Ahern give him the film from his camera.

Ahern refused and started to walk away toward the street when the man tackled him and tried to start beating on him.  Two firefighters nearby grabbed the enraged man and held him until a policeman got there and subdued the assailant.

Telegram & Gazette photo

The Worcester Telegram & Gazette reports that after detaining him in a cruiser for a while, the man was allowed to leave and he drove away.  The police chief said that they will probably arrest him later.  Read the full report in the T & G HERE.

Thursday Morning News Hot Off the Ticker

A New Zealand schoolteacher whose job "has pretty much gone away" is in trouble again after being charged twice in a week for drunk driving.  In the most recent adventure she had set her cruise control at 65 mph, then took out her toothbrush and started brushing her teeth.  She came to the attention of both the police and the ambulance squad following her not-unexpected crash into a rock bank.  The Marlborough Express has the STORY.

The Boston Globe reports that a Beverly, Massachusetts, man died last week when his kilt caught fire while he was burning leaves in his back yard.  CLICK HERE to read the story on this unusual, but tragic event.

WCBS-TV has posted a partial list of New York Mayor Bloomberg's list of 20 firehouses that he still wants to shut down by the end of June.  One of the stations designated to go extinct is the first-due company for Wall Street, Engine 4.  Firefighters Union official Ed Boles told Channel 2:

“Engine 4 is the first engine to respond if there was any tragedy at Wall Street,” Boles said. “Wall Street is the economic capital of the world. They’re also a mass de-con unit, so if there was a major terrorist attack they would be the first ones to help out."

If you think Bloomberg is nutty, then you're not alone.  Ch. 2 also posted this video report:

As we are just now preparing to post this Ticker report, we are learning that a high-pressure gas main has just ruptured in downtown Chicago, Illinois.  All buildings in the entire block are being evacuated and a level II haz-mat response has been initiated.  The area affected includes the Archdiocese of Chicago and two hospitals.
Update:  The incident was quickly mitigated and all units placed back in service after the gas company shut down the line and the residual burned off.  The gas main had been struck by construction equipment.  No other damage reported.

Firefighters Rescue One Burn Victim

DENVER, COLORADO, FIREFIGHTERS were called out Thursday morning around 1:30 am local time when neighbors reported hearing a violent explosion in a commercial district.  When they arrived on the scene the FF's found fire showing from a warehouse-type occupancy and a 2nd alarm was struck.

KDVR-TV

The first units entered the building on a primary search and they found a man with thermal burns laying inside.  The man who is believed to have been living in the shop, was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

The business appeared to be related to auto repairs of some sort and contained several acetylene and oxygen bottles.  The fire officer had the FF's withdraw from the structure that already had a parial collapse from the initial explosion.  There was debris as far away as 100 yards.  The fire was knocked down in about an hour, but units remained on the scene for several hours working on the hot spots.

Early-Morning Fire Claims 3 Children

Smoke Detectors Were Operating

A FIRE BROKE OUT IN A CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, home just after 2 am Thursday morning.  The 2½-story multi-family structure was housing as many as 17 people when the smoke detectors started sounding, waking them up.  Everybody escaped except for three children ages 9, 4, and 2 years.

WGN-TV

The first arriving firefighters got into the fire building right away and rescued two boys, but they did not survive, passing away shortly after arriving at the hospital.  The third child, a girl was found after the fire was extinguished.

The Chicago Tribune quotes,

"There was heavy fire on the first and second floor on (our) arrival," said Chicago Fire Department Chief Thomas Kennedy at the scene. "The children were on the first floor in the rear of the building. I'm not making any comment about where it started, or how. It's under investigation."

Firefighters rushed into the burning house as fast as they could to take out the first two children, he said. "They did everything humanly possible to save those kids," he said.

The three victims were siblings from a family of ten children.  WFLD-TV reports:

“I tried to get my babies out…but it was too late by that time,” said Stacey Austin, the children’s father. He said he ran to the kitchen for water to douse the flames after he awoke and saw the blaze, then tried to evacuate his family. He saw one of his sons playing with a lighter, he said.

The couple’s 10 children were all in the home when the fire started, Austin said. They thought everyone was out safely, but realized after they were out that three had been left inside.

Thursday Morning Lineup – Where There's Smoke….. ?

After all these years, and all those thousands of basic firefighter schools, I still see fire departments spraying water on the smoke instead of the fire.  This really upsets me because it shows a complete disregard for why we are here and what we have been trusted with.  When we show up at a fire, the public has every right to expect us to make valid attempts to contain, control and extinguish it.  But still, way too many firefighters just become front-row spectators and watch the show while dutifully running the town's water supply down by spraying it into the air and letting the heat carry it up and away.  In fact, they are able to slide into viewing mode quicker by having fog nozzles already mounted on their master stream devices before they roll out of the station.

Basic fire training starts (or should) with the standard Chemistry of Fire lectures followed by the teaching of why water is the agent of choice for making fires go out.  You know, the expansion of water into steam by absorbing the heat, etc., etc.  And part of that portion of the school emphasizes the need to have the fire stream reach the seat of the fire, or you won't be putting it out.  But I am wondering why these basics are being ignored in so many places?  Have the bare-bones tactics been dropped from fire schools?  In this era of handing out EMT recertifications without holding any refresher training, I wouldn't be surprised to learn that there are fire schools that skip stuff in order to make things easier for both the instructors and the students, wrong as it is.

But the more likely reason is that the subject is being taught, but the students either don't learn it, or make no attempt to retain it.  So why are the fireground officers ignoring it?  Are things that shabby within those departments that not even the officers responsible for the fire scene  know the basics?  If you think it's tough now getting the citizens to pay for adequate fire protection, just wait until they find out that fire loss isn't much higher if they don't even bother having anyone show up in the first place.

Now let's show up at the apparatus and get this equipment checked out.  It's time to get some more coffee going, too.  See you later back in the day room.

East Allentown Greets Lorenzo

When Lorenzo guided the Sutphen pumper into East Allen Township, Pennsylvania, a few days ago, there was a big welcome awaiting him.

After driving through (still more!) snow, he was directed into the firehouse where the crew pitched in and gave the pumper a good wash job.

Chief Frantz grabbed a brush and showed the young 'uns how to do it.

After finishing, everyone took a moment to admire their work.

After cleanup and while waiting for the storm to finish passing over, several of them went to the ice cream shop for a malt.

The next morning Lorenzo got a ride in the tower while Chief Frantz fixed the firehouse breakfast.

After chow, one of the firefighters climbed into the cab and joined Lorenzon for the drive into the Big Apple.

Next:  Lorenzo lands in Long Island.

Couldn't Even Fit The Rescue Truck Up the Alleyway

A WOMAN MIRACULOUSLY ESCAPED WITH apparently just a cut to her head after she drove off the 5th level on a parking garage in Melbourne, Australia, Monday morning.

The gaping hole on the top level shows where the car came through
(Herald Sun / Pinder)

Nobody knows why or what caused her to drive her car through the barrier where it next bounced off the roof of the white building at right and then banged back and forth between the two buildings until it landed on it side, wedged between the other building and the car park.

The fire department was challenged  to get her extricated from the car in the confined space, but when she was finally freed the paramedics preliminary assessment disclosed only a severe laceration to her head.  She was transported to the hospital for examination and treatment.

Ambulance Crash in Spokane

Collision at Controlled Intersection

AN AMR AMBULANCE IN SPOKANE, WASHINGTON, collided with a SUV around 4:30 am Wednesday morning at an intersection controlled by flashing signals.

The ambulance was returning from a call and was not using its emergency lights or siren when it entered the intersection on the flashing yellow.  A private vehicle with two passengers traveling on the cross street drove through the flashing red and paid for it by getting T-boned by the ambulance.  The car then veered off and ended up against a paint store, but did not damage the building.

The two ambulance medics were transported for checkups and released a few hours later.  The two people in the SUV who were delivering newspapers at the time were also transported with some undisclosed injuries.

CHILLICOTHE UPDATE:  The Chillicothe Fire Department's new alarm system and sprinkler restoration is just about completed.  (See the earlier Firegeezer report HERE.)  The Chillicothe Gazette is reporting today:

The installation of a new fire alarm system at Chillicothe Fire Department's Station 1 was completed Tuesday.  The repairs to the sprinkler system also are anticipated to be completed this week, and department officials are hopeful the systems' official tests, as required by the State Fire Marshal's Office, will be Friday.

Although installed, the department will have to continue fire watch until the system test is done –which requires a witness from the fire marshal's office.

At least 3 more days of firewatch duty lay ahead.

Downtown Fire in Georgia

"….the downtown landscape is changed forever"

Vincent Productions

A LIGHTNING STORM IN THE EARLY HOURS of Tuesday morning is believed to be the cause of a devastating fire in the town center of Donalsonville, Georgia.  Six buildings housing seven businesses were destroyed as the fire department worked hard to keep the fire from taking the entire city block.  WALB-TV Ch.10 reports:

Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the half block of cherry near 3rd. "We didn't want it to jump over to this side of the alley and then we didn't want it to extend to the other side of the alley behind it," said (Donalsonville Fire Chief Travis) Brooks.

Brooks says there was no way they could save these buildings. "This was almost a lost cause, but we had to fight it. We had to try to keep it contained to keep it from spreading to the exposures."

More than ten South Georgia fire departments responded to the call. Brooks says without all the help, there's a good chance the fire would have spread and destroyed even more of downtown Donalsonville.

Through his writings and appearances on the show, one thing becomes glaringly clear:  Dave LeBlanc is passionate about the fire service.  He is never afraid to voice his opinion, yet can always be counted on to respect those who differ with him.

So, join in live on Wednesday night, April 6 at 9pm ET for the premiere of “Taking Up”, or visit FirefighterNetcast.com to download this and every other show for listening at your leisure.
