Family of Eight Believed Inside

A VANCOUVER, WASHINGTON, HOUSE THAT EXPLOSIVELY erupted in flames early Sunday morning was the home of a family of six children and their two parents.  Calls started flooding the dispatch center at 1:30 am when the massive flashover engulfed the house and woke many neighbors who looked outside and saw the blaze.

The house was already fully involved when the FD arrived in five minutes and was beginning to impinge on a house next to it.  They had the fire under control in 30 minutes, but the entire roof had collapsed and the house was completely burned out.

Two hours later, around 4 am the firefighters began finding the bodies of the residents but all of them were burned beyond recognition.  So far, six have been discovered but two remain unaccounted for.  It is not yet known for certain how many people were in the house at the time.  One neighbor told The Oregonian that they believed the gas and electricity had been shut off to the house about a month ago, but the family continued to live there.

Investigators continue to search for the cause of the fire and, because of the large number of fatalities, the ATF is assisting in the investigation.
