Crash Disabled Traffic Lights
A COLLISION TUESDAY AFTERNOON BETWEEN A BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ladder truck and an SUV ended up with the firetruck taking down a light pole and leaving traffic in the area snarled for hours.
WCVB-TV
Ladder 29 was responding on an emergency call when the two vehicles met at a controlled intersection around 3:45 pm. The car was being driven by an off-duty policeman who was on his way to work. The impact caused the ladder to veer off course and into the pole that the traffic signal was mounted on, knocking it over. The fall of the pole caused the electric power to charge the pole, preventing the tow truck from removing the aerial truck from being moved until about 3 hours later when the pole was de-energized.
This video report from WCVB-TV Ch. 5 tells the full story:
Only the two drivers were injured and they were both transported. The accident investigators are hoping that a nearby traffic camera will be able to discern which vehicle had the red light.
