Girardville Fire Chief Frank Zangari told the press:
The (4-story) properties at 116, 114, 112, 110 and 108 W. Main St. were destroyed in the blaze, and 116 collapsed about two hours after the fire started. He said two firefighters were trapped at one point in 112 W. Main.”The Rapid Intervention Team was engaged and the firefighters were rescued. They were checked out by EMS and returned to fight the fire,” Zangari said.

Chief Zangari also told the Pottsville Republican Herald that the fire started in the basement of one of the homes when a young woman crammed a wood stove tightly with Duraflame logs. Duraflames are to be used only in metal or open-hearth fireplaces. The fire grew rapidly and the floor in the house of origin was so hot that firefighters’ boots were sticking to it.
WNEP-TV filed this video report that has good fire footage and catches the collapse:
The fire broke out shortly after 6 pm and the operation required a tanker relay to supplement the domestic water supply during the peak of the attack.
