Firehouse Accident Damages Station and New Aerial

THE BRAND NEW AERIAL TRUCK THAT CLINTON (New York) FIRE RESCUE is readying for service, suffered a setback last Monday when someone tried to drive it out of the station with a compartment door open.  The door caught the brick wall at the bay opening in Fire Station 2 and pulled down part of the front wall while ripping the compartment door.

Utica Observer-Dispatch

The city paid $1.06 million for the truck which was scheduled to go in service on September 1.  It is now parked in a Syracuse repair shop waiting for replacement parts and work crews are repairing the station’s front wall and overhead bay door.

Clinton Mayor Robert “Gill” Goering said, “Clearly with the accident, we need more training.”

The Utica Observer-Dispatch has the STORY.

Say it with me … Roll Up Doors. (and training that you do NOT move the truck when that red light on the dash is flashing!)

Don’t be a moron; keep your door on!

So, let me get this straight… After completing the “Golden Circle”, starting the truck, looking at the blinking red light, checking the mirrors on both sides, looking at the blinking red light, and putting the apparatus in drive, the driver STILL didn’t notice anything wrong?

We had a firefighter do the same thing with one of our engines about four months ago… lucky for him the building was constructed as a bomb shelter in 1914 or thereabouts, and the door lost before the wall gave way. I don’t get it: WHY would you pull out without ensuring everything’s buttoned up? Maybe that’s why I haven’t ripped a door off the truck. Yet.

The reason, why we only have roll-up shutters for our compartments in Germany – not doors ;-)
