Roll Over, Abilene

JUST BEFORE 7:30 AM FRIDAY MORNING, ABILENE (TEXAS) ENGINE 5 was returning from a call when the engine started accelerating on its own.  The Abilene Reporter News continues:

When the driver tried to bring the engine to a stop, it slid sideways and turned 180 degrees, crossing into the left-hand lane of traffic. Once the tires of the engine came into contact with the shoulder, they “dug into the soft gravel, causing the engine to flip onto its side.”

Once the incident occurred, crew members issued a “mayday” report and additional units responded. All four of Engine Five’s crew members were able to exit the vehicle on their own before help arrived. Each was taken to Hendrick Medical Center for precaution and all were evaluated and released with minor injuries.

The engine, a 1996 Sutphen, sustained heavy damage and may have to be replaced.  Read the full account HERE.

This was the second time in 16 months that the Abilene FD has suffered a rollover accident.  In March of 2009 a brush truck was heavily damaged when it rolled over while working a grass fire.  This video captured the rollover accident:

Is it me or is everyone more concerned about the condition and repair of the truck than the condition of the firefighters the truck appeared to roll on top of ???? Seems to be some mis-directed sense of worry… “Gee they may even need to send the truck out of town to get it fixed up” That's great sheriff, who gives a flyin “F” about the truck, we had guys on there.
