According to the Railways Bari-Nord,  the driver of the tanker attempted to cross the level crossing while the gates were closing.  As the tanker was fully loaded and the area is affected by a ditch, the truck was delayed and unable to prevent being trapped by the gates.  The train operator seeing the truck across the rails, applied the brakes but was unable to stop in time, hitting the tanker in the center and driving it down the tracks for several meters.

There were 37 passengers injured in the collision, but only one was considered serious.  Most of the cargo of oil poured out onto the railroad right-of-way.  The police are investigating the crash to determine if the truck driver committed criminal negligence.
