THE TREASURE SHIP, A LANDMARK RESTAURANT in Panama City, Florida, was largely damaged Wednesday afternoon after fire broke out around 3:00 pm.

Fortunately it began during the mid-afternoon lull between lunch and dinner service and only about 35 employees were inside.  The building that was constructed about 30 years ago was made to look like a pirate ship and had kitchens and dining areas on three levels.  It isn’t known yet how it started but the first time somebody noticed the smoke it appeared to be coming from the main dining room on the 2nd floor.

The Bay County fire department called in extra companies from around the area as the fire got a good hold on the upper floors.  They had the fire under control in about an hour, but units were still working after dark.

Not being there it is hard to get the full picture of the entire situation. Just looking at the limited video it would appear they needed to be more aggresive initially and needed additional tower ladders and ladder trucks with elevated master stream devices in place after 8 parts of the video. Don't know the manpower, equipment and water supply issues they may have though.

back in the day (i left panama city in 1998) Thomas Drive VFD – now part of the Bay County Fire Department, which is a consolidation of all the VFD's in the county – had the only aerial on the beach and 1 person on shift. Since I only get back to visit rarely, the only thing I do know is that there are 5 on shift (i am not sure if all the VFD's are manned) and they have a new aerial. I am unsure of the aid agreement with the Panama City Beach FD or if they have acquired and aerial since i have departed. The fire scene and first due station are only about 1/4 mile apart, and they probably had some pucker when they pulled out on the apron since they could see the fire. that was one of the “i hope that never burns” training scenarios we used to have. both the first due engine and aerial are stationed there (they are the white w/ blue stripe trucks). if i remember correctly, there's a lot of brick and concrete under the wood veneer (i was 8 when it was built) and the roadway is being 4 laned with bridge construction between the station and scene. water was always good in the area, never had any problems when i was there. i was a volly for TDVFD for about 5 years and lived on panama city beach for 28.
