ON APRIL 17 A FISHING BOAT OFF THE COAST of Versilia, Italy, snagged a World War II mine on the sea bottom. After first evacuating the area around a dock for 100 meters, the device was towed into the harbor by Coast Guard and Navy personnel in an operation coordinated by the Viareggio Harbor Master.

After being brought to dockside, the mine was place into a sling by Navy divers, then the local fire department brought in its heavy-duty crane to lift the mine out of the water and lowered it into a coast guard boat. It was next taken to a safe area 5 miles offshore where it was successfully blown up.
