“Finny’s here,” said the chief’s aide to his boss. Turning around to look, Batt. Chief Jenkins saw the stocky, middle-aged man getting out of the car. Standing about 5′- 10″, the rumpled man stood there for a moment looking over the scene. The fire was still burning, albeit under control, as he then opened up the trunk and lifted out his fire boots.
Everybody in the department knew him on sight, Captain Finbar Lonnigan, head of the arson investigation unit and carrying a reputation for tenaciousness that always led him to a conviction.
“Why is he here?” Jenkins said to no one in particular, “And so soon?”
