Ok, the headaches and indigestion should be gone by now. The flimsy excuse (“Holiday Season”) for overeating and overdrinking is past and not a viable reason anymore. But there are some fall-backs that can be pressed into use, since this is Saturday and the weekend is just getting started. For some folks, “Snowed in” will work today, especially in the north-central and northeast sections. “Too windy” is going to come in handy in my area. And no matter where you are, “Gets dark too early” is reliable and also available for 3 or 4 more weeks yet. If you’ve got a better excuse, share it with us in the Comments. We’re always looking for fresh cop-outs.

Hockey fans got their money’s worth yesterday if they watched the NHL outdoor Winter Classic in Boston between the Bruins and the Philadelphia Flyers. If you’ll excuse the cliche, it was a true storybook tale. First of all, the weather was perfect for what they were doing. There was fresh snow in the city and the stadium creating the perfect atmosphere. And at game time, there wasn’t any weather disruption, no snow falling, no wind to speak of, and a perfect overcast to prevent any ice glare.
The game script was just what you’d wish for, too. A scoreless first period with lots of coaching tactics. Then early in the second period the Flyers scored a goal. And it wasn’t a snazzy play, either. Boston’s goaltender got distracted from the play and started jostling with a Flyer while somebody else sneaked around and put it in the net.
From there on, the goaltenders’ duel kept the game at 1-0 despite a lot of very good offensive play, until just two minutes remaining in regulation time when Boston scored on a tip-in. The 5-minute sudden-death overtime wrapped up the perfect storyline when Boston’s Marco Sturm scored barely two minutes into the OT session. Naturally, the place went nuts. All in all, it was a great game for the viewers at home.
The National Hockey League has posted highlights videos of the game. If you want to check out the summaries, here are the links:
