NEW YEAR’S DAY WAS ESPECIALLY TOUGH ON FAMILIES AROUND THE GLOBE.

In Palm Springs, California, a 30-year-old woman, her three children and a 32-year-old man were killed in a fire that engulfed their mobile home at 5:15 am.  The AP reports that the firefighters initially found the bodies of the two adults and later discovered the children — an 11-year-old girl, a seven-year-old boy, and a six-year-old girl.

The FF’s had the fire out fairly quickly, but it has not yet been determined what caused it.

A house fire in Carroll County, Missouri, trapped five people in the basement of a rural home where they were having a New Year’s Eve sleepover.  After quickly extinguishing the fire in the basement, firefighters found the bodies of 23-year-old Lacey Stephens, 24-year-old James Aaron Ford, 4-month-old Kenzie Stephens, 11-year-old Stoney Mack Russel and 11-year-old Daniel Cosgrove. Stoney Russel was Lacey’s brother and Cosgrove was Stoney Russel’s friend.

Two other people an adult and a teen who were on the first-floor level, were able to flee the blaze, one of them running to a neighbor’s to raise the alarm.  Both of them have been hospitalized.

The sheriff stated that the fire was “strange” because there is no outward appearance on the house that there was a fire there.  The cause is still under investigation, but it is not considered suspicious.  They are considering an unattended fireplace.

Local officials say that they all perished from smoke inhalation and that another 13 of their neighbors suffered from the smoke.  They also pointed out that there were no smoke detectors in the apartment.
