THE WIESBADEN, GERMANY, FIRE BRIGADE WAS FACED WITH an unusual life-hazard problem at a basement fire on Thursday. The fire began at 1:30 pm when a careless man decided to take the fuel tank off of his motorcycle in his basement and work on it (every town’s got one of these guys, don’t they? ….. ED.) Naturally, the vapors flashed and started a fire.
When the FB arrived they were met with heavy black smoke and several occupants coming from the house, as well as the home-mechanic who was standing out front with burns to his upper body and head. As the victim was taken away by the ambulance, a second alarm was struck for assistance and the residents notified the fireground commander that the owner is a snake collecter with many reptiles kept in terrariums in the basement. Some of them were described as “gigantic.”

As the FF’s were knocking the fire down with a cellar pipe, four of the the largest creatures escaped as their terrariums were broken during the firefighting activity, and slithered to the outside and freedom. After establishing a good ventilation action in the basement, the FF’s were withdrawn from the building for safety’s sake. After the fire was determined to be completely extinguished, the fire brigade informed the owner that capturing the loose snakes was his responsibility and they then packed up and returned to quarters with a Christmas tale to tell.
