The fire quickly spread to other floors of the entertainment complex, but was knocked down in about an hour by the firefighters. Local news sources are saying that there were more than 200 people in the bar when the fire broke out.
Medan Police Chief Imam Margono told the AFP: “We have found a suspect. He’s a member of staff at the entertainment complex. ‘He tried to tidy up the carpet on the third floor by burning excess threads. The carpet quickly caught on fire.
(The people) were killed because they got trapped on the third floor in the karaoke lounges. The lounges were near a kitchen and the third floor was sound-proofed, so there was no ventilation.” He added: “From the third floor the fire spread rapidly to other floors.”
Medan is located in the northern island of Sumatra.
