The Epson 810 was delivered as promised yesterday, late in the morning. (we talked about it yesterday HERE.) It came in a monster box filled with packing paper as well as the factory carton that you see on the store shelves. I’m impressed with how much it weighs compared to its relatively-small size. The thing weighs in at about 30 lbs., even though it’s only 18″ x 18″ x 7″. But there is a lot of machinery and moving parts inside that housing. I’m hoping that doesn’t lead to problems down the road. We’ll see.
The initial set-up was pretty standard with the exception that all the commands are done on a soft-touch screen that has the same feel as those debit card terminals at the grocery store. The “Quick Guide” that tells you all about how to use it is 62 pages (one language only!), thus negating the “Quick” part of the setup experience. I see from the manual that one of the machine’s features is the ability to use the USB socket on the front panel to charge your cellphone or similar gadget, if they have USB compatibility themselves. Mine doesn’t.
Another feature, that I will certainly be able to use, is a simple command to have the printer automatically print out a document on both sides of the sheets of paper. This will really be a benefit because there are many times that I print things directly from the computer that are 3 or more pages long. The one thing that I have left to do is connect my encrypted Wi-Fi with the Epson. It shouldn’t be difficult, but will require that I hold the (separate) network installation guide (34 pages) in one hand while I (softly) punch in the code numbers with the other hand. But I didn’t have time to do all that yesteday, so that will be my afternoon project for today.
I should have everything up and running this afternoon and then I’ll give it a good test drive over the long weekend and give you my report on Monday morning. Speaking of morning…. it’s time to get this equipment checked out now. I’ll make sure that the coffee is started and then we’ll meet back in the day room.
