In Halifax Nova Scotia they charge around $300.00 to take the FF entry exam.Part of this fee is for the lie detector test that is administered by two off duty police officers that set up a business just for the purpose.

I am a Chief officer with 25 years in Massachusetts who for reasons I won't get into is back in EMT-B school. With three weeks left in class which my department already paid $650 for, we were informed on Saturday taht it will be $235 to take the State paratical ($150 to the State, $85 to the examiners) Upon sucessful completion of the practical, you must pay the "vendor" $55 to take the written which by the way you have three attempts to pass but of course it's $55 for each attempt. If you are unlucky enough to have go to the written three times the total cost oc certification is $1050. That doesn't include time and transportation to take the course. They wonder why we call it Taxachusetts!

I agree on the outlandish part with the fees being at $250.

I know Geezer and I have disagreed in the past when the fees have been more reasonable -- I've seen $25 to $50 be common in Connecticut for filing an application.

I guess on the six of one, half dozen of the other...at least the $250 in Massachusetts covers many towns (I believe Civil Service is optional, some hire from the list, some do not) $250 once isn't different from $25 ten times.
