Part Two

Jimmy had his car already packed the day before, so he set out on his journey right from the firehouse.  After getting onto the freeway and driving for about two hours, he was getting into a region of rolling hills and peaceful farmland.  So he exited onto State Route 38 and cruised along in the direction of what looked to be forest land in the last throes of its autumn colors.

Keeping his eyes peeled for just the right kind of road to follow, it didn’t take long for him to spot one.  Slowing down, he turned onto a newly-paved 2-lane roadway that continued west directly toward the woodlands.  The road was unbelievably smooth and free of any traffic whatsoever.  The only other vehicle he saw for the first 15 miles was a grocery purveyor’s truck coming the opposite direction.

“Well, that’s a good sign,” Jimmy said to himself.  “It looks like there might be a community of some sort down here if they’re getting food deliveries.”  But as he drove on, the woods started getting more and more dense with a lovely tree canopy completely covering the road.  “This is really pretty,” he thought, “But it sure is getting dark.”

After going through a tunnel of oak trees on a series of S-curves, the car suddenly burst out of the forest into a sunny clearing filled with a town that looked like it had just been transplanted from a picture-book.

It was almost like going into another world.
