A 5-ALARM FIRE IN THE BRONX SATURDAY MORNING raced through the common cockloft of a strip mall and gutted all 14 shops in it. The shopping center was built about 100 yrs. ago before modern fire prevention codes were enacted, leaving it vulnerable for such devastation. In fact, the same building suffered a major fire this past April and some of the shops were readying for a re-opening this month. The block-long building was occupied primarily by ethnic restaurants and businesses.

Early indications are that the fire began in a bakery shop that was scheduled to re-open on Monday, and extended quickly into the cockloft. The fire was attacked by about 150 firefighters and kept them working for five hours. By the time it was extinguished, the entire roof and much of the front wall of the structure had collapsed.
