The Ambulance was traveling emergency status while transferring an infant in an incubator from the island’s hospital to a specialist care unit on the mainland. It has not been disclosed what caused the accident. The Hampshire Police issued the following statement:
Police were called after a serious crash between a car and an ambulance in East Cowes Road, near the racecourse on the Isle of Wight. The ambulance was responding when the crash took place and those members of the public on board were not harmed and have been transferred to another ambulance.A man who was travelling in the car has been pronounced dead at the scene, and one other person involved has very serious injuries.
It has not yet been made public which of the two victims was driving the car. A 6-yr.-old boy in the car was unharmed. The South Central Ambulance Service vehicle contained a driver, a nurse and baby in an incubator. While the incubator was “bumped about” in the accident, the baby only suffered minor injuries, according to The Telegraph.
