Chapter 6
Several days later, the Fire Chief was driving past the station when he noticed that Old Red was sitting in its old spot and the Green Machine was sitting out in the rain. Figuring that he was being messed with by some of the old hands, he stopped and drove Old Red out and parked it and put the Green Machine back inside. The new green color was not well liked by the traditional firefighters and he had cheerfully taken a lot of grief over the color, but leaving a brand new truck sitting out in the rain bordered on insanity.
A few weeks later, the Fire Chief went to the station to retrieve paperwork and found Old Red once again sitting in the bay while the Green Machine was sitting out in the parking lot with the Old Red’s “For Sale” sign on it. Now the Chief was really ticked off. Some joking around is fine but this was getting old. He switched the trucks around and sat down to write a quick memo about the dangers of leaving a brand new truck outside unattended.
