Does Drudge read Firegeezer? Probably not, but just one day after we ran Steve’s story about the home-size nuclear energy plants (HERE) Drudge linked to a related story talking about the same topic. This is something that has been working its way through the approval process for a few years now, but suddenly he picks up on it too? Just further proof that Firegeezer readers are on the leading edge of the information revolution. And I’ve got some bridge stock here that you might be interested in.

On another totally unrelated topic, most of you know that Interstate 40 is one of the nation’s busiest transcontinental highways, running from North Carolina to California. And if you’ve ever driven it, then you can attest to the traffic count. So you can imagine what the results of a disruption would be. If not, then you can find out pretty quickly because a rockslide has closed it just east of the No. Carolina/Tennesse border. The boulders came a’tumbling down at 2 am when traffic was light, fortunately. As far as anybody knows, no one was trapped under it, but one car ran into the rock pile and wrecked. The slide only covers about 100 feet of roadway, but it’s 50 feet high and some of the boulders weigh as much as 20 tons. Here’s a bit of raw video from the site:
Here’s the kicker: Highway officials expect it will take 3 months to clear the slide and repair the highway. That wipes out all the Thanksgiving and Christmas travelers who will now have to take a different route.

The second of the two Popp brothers is scheduled to be sentenced today for his part in starting the devastating fire at the Cudahy packing plant back in July. Earlier this month on the 9th, we reported (HERE) on the sentencing of Joshua Popp who stole the military flare that started the fire. Today his younger brother Kurtis, who launched the flare during a backyard picnic on July 5, will be sentenced after he pleaded guilty to the same charges as his brother. We’ll be keeping an eye on the court procedings and let you know what the outcome is. The Cudahy fire, you may recall, burned for four days and left over $50 million in damages. Well, we’re heading into the last week of October finishing up with the Hallowe’en mischief on Saturday night and the return to Standard Time on Sunday morning. So let’s get the equipment checked out and then see what surprises the day brings us. I’ll go start the coffee.
