Israeli Firefighters Stage Job Action

THE MEMBERS OF THE ISRAELI FIRE AND RESCUE SERVICES have been staging a number of job actions for the past six weeks protesting a whopping 30% to their annual budget.  Other government agencies have been similarly whacked and their unions are also participating in the protests.

This morning (Sunday) a convoy of several dozen fire trucks began driving along the primary highway that runs from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem at 5 kilometers-per-hour and they successfully created a massive traffic jam along the road.  The police finally pulled them over and forced the fire trucks to wait while they cleared up the congestion.

Yoav Tadasi, head of the Firefighters Union, expressed frustration at what he views as neglect on the part of the government. “We cannot continue to work this way. We are lacking fire trucks, we are lacking equipment…. No fire department in the world can work this way!” he exclaimed in an interview on Army Radio and reported by the Jerusalem Post.

Several hundred garbage trucks are also poised to conduct a disruptive convoy today, too.  The Union of Local Authorities, the amalgam of government labor unions, announced that there would be two days of such protesting.  If the government fails to acede to their demands for restoration of their fund, then a full nationwide strike of government workers would take place.

Dozens Die in Drug Re-hab Clinic Fire

AN INTENSE FIRE RIPPED THROUGH A DRUG Rehabilitation clinic Sunday morning in the central Asian country of Kazakhstan.  So far, at least 37 people have been reported to have died as they were trapped in the building that has locked doors, barred windows and few proper exitways.

The building, like so many from the Soviet-era, has a long history of safety violations including a lack of an alarm system.

There is no indication yet of the cause of the fire that consumed the entire 7,000 sq. ft. wood-frame building that was constructed in 1951.  All but 2 of the victims are reported to have been patients at the clinic.  Several more have been hospitalized, some in critical condition with severe burns.  Firefighters are being credited with saving at least 40 lives.

One government official stated that there was a long delay in notifying the fire department, thus allowing the fire to spread and cause so much damage and death.

Reuters reports:  The facility is one of many state-run healthcare institutions offering treatment and counselling to drug addicts in the former Soviet republic which lies on the main drug trafficking route from Afghanistan to Western Europe.

There are about 55,000 officially registered drug addicts in the 16-million nation where, in addition to smuggled Afghan opium and heroin, local wild-growing cannabis is available in abundance.

Former Fire Chief Sentenced in Nova Scotia

IN SYDNEY, NOVA SCOTIA, A FORMER FIRE CHIEF whose actions nearly destroyed an entire fire department was sentenced this week to a year’s probation and ordered to repay $7,000 that he stole from his VFD.

Robert Craig King, 33, was the fire chief of the Birch Grove VFD on Cape Breton Island when he wrote a check to himself on the department’s account for the $7,000.  When he was confronted by the FD’s treasurer and officers, he said that the check had been stolen from his truck and somebody had used it to his detriment.  King then also implored the board to not report it to the police because he had just completed a police training program and disclosure of his misadventure could affect his ability to get a job as an officer.

The treasurer however felt an obligation to report the incident and an investigation  was begun.  As a result, many of  the volunteer members who believed King’s tale resigned from the department because of the treasurer’s actions.  The sudden lack of manpower crippled the department’s ability to respond to alarms and some neighboring FD’s were put on standby to assist the few remaining active firefighters.

The police investigation revealed, among other things, a CCTV tape from the bank showing King cashing the check himself.  It was also disclosed that he looted the bank account by making other cash withdrawals.  Following the investigation, most of the recalcitrant volunteers returned to duty for the department.

The story is even more involved and the Cape Breton Post has the complete STORY HERE.

Long-time readers may recall our posting two years ago (HERE) on a major fire in Hobart, the largest city in Tasmania which is one of Australia’s states.  The fire started in the daytime in the city’s largest department store which was also one of their oldest commercial buildings still being used.

hobart a

While everybody in the building, employees and shoppers alike, were evacuated safely, the fire continued to spread, eventually destroying the entire 4-story building along with all the store stock.

One of our regular readers “down under,” Darren V. has just sent us the final Magistrates Court report on the fire following an exhaustive investigation by the coroner’s office and it really rips the fire department.  The conclusions blame the FD for the total destruction of the building, claiming that if the department had operated properly the fire would not have done nearly as much damage and the building probably would not have been lost.

In the report, some of the critical items that the coroner listed are:

  • A lack of a building pre-plan and a complete ignorance of the layout of the building on the part of the firefighters.
  • Failure to follow and enforce the department’s S.O.P.’s.
  • The initial dispatch was for a single engine company and when the first-in officer saw smoke in the building there was an inexcusable delay in calling for a full response.
  • It took the FF’s 30 minutes to find the fire which was located on the ground floor in the void between the ceiling and the floor above.  They are blaming that also to a lack of a pre-plan and a lack of training.
  • The FD failed to immediately put hose lines in service as soon as they discovered there was fire in the building.
  • And the major factor in the loss of the building:  The FD turned off the sprinkler system at the beginning of the operation.

The report is complete and very detailed, and covers more than just the fire department’s action.  But it is well worth your time to take about ten minutes and READ THE REPORT HERE.

From this distance, it appears that the supervisors of the FD were very complacent and negligent in their responsibilities to both the citizens and their own firefighters.  There was a serious deficiency in training as well as preparations for major fires, and the failure to follow S.O.P.’s and procedures.  Fire officers everywhere should read this report and then use it as a trigger for self-evaluation of  your own readiness and preparation for that eventual major event.

And readiness begins with our morning equipment check, so let’s get started with that while I get the coffee going.

TWO 20-YR.-OLD MEN WERE ARRESTED in Fort Smith, Arkansas, Wednesday after they were identified from a surveillance video that had run on a tv station’s Crime Stoppers segment.  Cody Sexton and Kenny Andrews, both of nearby Muldrow, Oklahoma, were booked in on a felony obscenity complaint arising from their action in the Fort Smith Walmart store on September 3.

They had removed a promotional DVD that was playing in the TV department and replaced it with a pornographic movie.  The player was hooked up to a bank of six television sets that were part of the appliance display.  After the initial novelty of it wore off, some people started complaining to the management and they removed the dirty disk.

After none of the store employees could recognize either of them from the tape, the police asked KSFM-TV to  play it asking for help in identifying them.  Within six minutes of the broadcast, they were tagged.

Ambulance Collision at Controlled Intersection

AN AMBULANCE IN TAFT, CALIFORNIA, WAS TRANSPORTING A BURN PATIENT to the hospital Friday when it was involved in a collision at an intersection.  The ambulance had its lights and siren on and was approaching the controlled intersection with a green light.  As it got near, the signal turned yellow and the ambulance slowed down, yet continued through.  A pickup truck that was stopped for the red light started proceding when his light went green and was broadsided by the ambulance.

The patient’s family was in a car following the ambulance and they took the patient the rest of the way to the hospital themselves.

The driver and medic of the ambulance were checked out at the hospital for injuries and were released.  The driver of the pickup had “moderate” injuries.

Louisiana Parish Begins Transformation From Volunteer to Combination Dept.

PLAQUEMINES PARISH (COUNTY), LOUISIANA, took the next step on Thursday to implement paid firefighters into their fire forces.  The parish has 12 all-volunteer fire departments, but sees the need to start staffing the firehouses on a permanent basis.  They have a commitment from the federal government to receive a $5 million grant to fund a driver and a dispatcher in each station for the next five years.

In order to provide the necessary matching funds and complete their program, the Parish Council passed a measure to institute a one-cent sales tax that will be dedicated to fire protection.  The proposal will be on the ballot on November’s election and if it passes, it will also provide 45 additional drivers allowing for 2 FF’s per shift for all 12 stations.

WDSU-TV Ch. 6 New Orleans has the video report:

Plaquemines Parish was heavily hit by Hurricane Katrina that did extensive damage to six of the twelve firehouses.

Arrests Made in Bremerton Arson Case

TWO TEENAGE BOYS WERE ARRESTED this week and charged with setting a fire in Bremerton, Washington, that caused $12 million damage.  STATter911 ran a video report on the July 27 fire HERE that destroyed a major portion of Arnold’s  Home Furnishings Store.  Witnesses said that they saw three boys running away from the building just as the fire was starting.  The fire extended to 5 alarms and kept units on the scene for two days.

KOMO-TV image

On Thursday, police arrested a 16-yr.-old and charged him with first-degree arson.  After reading him his rights, he told the investigators that he had broken a showroom window and then used a butane lighter to project a 2-ft.-long flame to set a couch on fire.  When the FD arrived on the scene the fire had already spread through that portion of the store making it untenable for firefighters.

While the boy was sitting in court yesterday (Friday) facing his arraignment, police were arresting a second boy who is 13 yrs. of age.  He is believed to have aided the first boy in the arson and will be held until his arraignment on Monday.  The Kitsap Sun has all the details of these arrests and legal procedings HERE.

Yesterday’s various 9/11 activities appeared to have been both successfully and tastefully presented.  As I had mentioned before, I was fearing that a bit of apathy had been creeping in lately about that horrible day.  But from my limited viewpoint I got the impression that there has been a resurgence in the public’s desire to perpetuate the memory of all the people who perished as a result of the attacks.

One of the really nice gestures took place down in Panama City, Florida, where Eastern Shipbuilding boatyards held the christening and launching ceremonies for the newest FDNY fireboat, appropriately named Three Forty Three.  Dave Statter has a good posting on this event that includes three videos.  I think the third one down is the best because it’s longer and more inclusive of the launching.  It’s always exciting to watch a new ship sliding down the ways for its first venture into the water.  But the pipe band really adds a tingle to the experience.  Check out Dave’s links to the informative articles and watch the videos on STATter911 HEREThere are another 18 months of fitting out the ship before it’s delivered.

One of the common peculiarities of people in the fire/rescue/ems field is the genuine interest in things digital, as well as a high percentage of photography buffs.  The marriage of the two that brought digital photography into the world is always a topic of interest to many of our readers.  With that thought, I want to pass along an upcoming event that I think you’ll find interesting.

On October 16 – 18, The Photographic Historical Society will present its tri-ennial PhotoHistory symposium at the George Eastman Museum of Photography & Film in Rochester,  New York.  According to their website, PhotoHistory has been held every 3 years since 1970, and brings together photographic historians, collectors and dealers from around the world. Events include a Saturday symposium at George Eastman House, and a Trade Show on Sunday specializing in vintage cameras, photographs, and all things photographic, from  ephemera to books.

This year’s highlight speaker will be Steve Sasson, the co-inventor of the digital camera.  He will be displaying his original 1973 prototype seen in this photo below:

steve-sasson-digital-camera-0021A

At the time of the invention, he couldn’t get Eastman Kodak to take any interest in the camera because they were more concerned with protecting their lucrative film sales business.  You can read more about this upcoming show at the PHS’s WEBSITE HERE.

It’s time to get this equipment checked out now.  Maybe you’ll want to pull out your cellphone and digitally record that exciting event.  I’m going to go start a fresh pot.

Burn-a-Car at Burnaby

A MAN WAS FILLING HIS CAR WITH GASOLINE in Burnaby, British Columbia, Monday when he fortunately saw an out-of-control car speeding right at him.  Ducking out of the way just by a whisker, he escaped harm or death as the car came careening across the pump island, mowing down two pumps and igniting an inferno that destroyed both cars.

The elderly driver of the runaway car and his wife/passenger managed to get out of their car before it all burst into flames.  The station attendent immediately hit the emergency shutoff for the pumps and stopped the fuel flow, but what was already out there was enough to keep the Burnaby firefighters busy for 15 minutes to knock it all down.

Texas City Church Fire Lights the Night

ONE OF THE LARGER CHURCHES IN TEXAS CITY, TEXAS, suffered major destruction Thursday night when a large portion of the church burned down.

KHOU-TV has this video report with some footage from the fire:

The fire was discovered around 8:20 pm while a choir group was finishing a rehearsal at the St. John’s United Methodist Church.  KHOU-TV describes what happened:

The musical group’s leader, Matthew Raines, his 6-year-old son, Bryce, and the church’s pastor, the Rev. Tom Crow, were in the sanctuary when the boy reported hearing a “pop.”

“He came running yelling ‘Fire, fire,’ and we could see flames,” Raines said. “By the time we turned the corner to get out, the fire had already engulfed the room.”

Everyone got out safe, and there were no reports of injuries.

The fire started in a prayer room near the church’s sanctuary, Rev. Crow said.

”It was unbelievably fast and strong and the flames were immediate,” Crow said. “I’ve never seen anything like it.”

The blaze engulfed the worship center and when the heat knocked out large windows at the front, the fresh rush of oxygen sent a fireball 60 feet into the air.

The sanctuary was destroyed and the gym and Sunday school wing had some fire and smoke damage.  The Texas City FD had every piece of equipment on the fire and were assisted by five other departments and three refinery fire brigades nearby.

Sam Bass Official's Troubles Grow

LAST MONTH FIREGEEZER REPORTED (HERE) on the president of the Sam Bass VFD in Williamson County, Texas, who was arrested and charged with possession of child pornography.  This is the fire department that we curiously noted was named after a notorious outlaw who was tracked down and killed by a posse of Texas Rangers.

Now-former president of the fire company, Gerald Cheney, 47, has just had his troubles compounded.  The Williamson County sheriff’s office has now filed felony theft charges against him after investigators determined that he has embezzled $220,000 from the FD over the past few years.  It was during the involved embezzlement investigation that the child porn violation was exposed.

Cheney’s wife of 17 years, Madeline was completely unknowing of his activities and has come out publicly condemning her husband and father of her children.

KVUE-TV ran this video report on the latest charges along with some comments by Madeline:

She also gave  KXAN Ch. 36 a video tour of her home showing some of Gerald’s ill-gotten gains:

Cheney is facing the possibility of spending 10 years in prison for the 3rd-degree felony child porn charge and another 99 years for the 1st-degree felony theft charges.

Fatal Jockey Fire Update

NORTH YORKSHIRE POLICE IN THE UK have released two surveillance video views of passersby that were in the area about the time of the fatal fire that killed two apprentice jockeys in a 2nd-story apartment.  For the background on this probable arson, see the Firegeezer report from Sept. 6 HERE.

The four people seen in the video shots, two in each of the two frames, were recorded walking along the sidewalks in that same block either just before or while the fire was being set.

The police are saying that they are not necessarily suspects, but they may have witnessed something prior to the fire that may help them piece together the events of the night.  BBC News reports:

Det Supt Alan Carey, who is leading the investigation into the fire, said: “It is vital that these four people come forward to speak to officers. “They were in the area of the fire at a crucial time, either just before it broke out or as it was happening.

“Even if they didn’t see anything, we still need to speak to them as they could help piece together the tragic events of Saturday morning.

The first picture shows two people, at 0205 am, walking along Church Street in the direction of the scene of the fire.

The second image, taken at about 0217 am, shows another two people walking on the other side of the same road, past a filling station, and also heading towards the scene.

FOR THE PAST TWO WEEKS FIREGEEZER HAS BEEN following the bizarre story coming out of the tiny town of Jericho, Arkansas, where a police officer shot the locality’s assistant fire chief in the back inside the courtroom.  It started on August 29 when we reported HERE on the event where a circuit judge threw out every traffic ticket that the obviously-corrupt police department had issued for the entire month of August.  The vol. fire chief, Don Payne had been contesting two of his tickets and a frustrated officer instigated a scuffle with him that ended with the policeman pulling out his pistol in the crowded courtroom and shooting Payne.

The next week we posted another video report (HERE) following up on  the story where we wrote:

The police chief [has since] disbanded the entire police force.  The county prosecutor says that he has no plans to charge the policeman for the shooting.

The mayor has gone into hiding.  The town hall is locked up and nobody is answering the phone.  The sheriff has been investigating the disappearance of large sums of city funds and has repossesed one of the town police cars for non-payment on a lease.  The State Forestry Commision had seized a fire truck that it had leased to the city.

Two days ago, on September 9, the mayor and the city council held a purported “secret meeting” in the town hall.  WPTY-TV Memphis sent a film crew over there, but by the time they got there the meeting was over and the town hall was locked up.  When they tried to talk to the mayor at her home, she slammed the door in their faces.  They filed this video report on their findings:

Now it’s becoming clear on what the secret meeting may have been about.  Yesterday, September 10, the local prosecutor filed charges against Chief Payne for “battery on a police officer.”  The prosecuter also said that none of the police officers will be charged.

WPTY-TV ran this video update on this latest turn in the story:

To sum up:  Following the judge’s dismissal of the traffic tickets,  Payne and a policeman got into a scuffle.  Witnesses are saying that the officer intiated the shoving match.  With Payne surrounded by police officers in the crowded court room, one of the policemen takes out his gun and begins shooting.  The prosecuter says “the officers had every right to detain Payne.”

But nobody is saying that they had any right to shoot him.  He was unarmed and outnumbered.  There’s more to come in this story.

There are countless commemorations scheduled today to honor the murdered citizens who fell victim on Sept. 11, 2001.  And the focus of most of them are directed to the hundreds of firefighters and police officers who perished while doing everything they could to get the WTC occupants out of the collapsing buildings.  Firehouse.com has a summary preview of today’s events at the three primary locations where the hijacked planes crashed HERE.

For the last couple of years it looked like the fervor or remembrance was fading nationwide, with a dropoff of public activities that recalled that horrible day when the world was changed for the worse.  But this year there appears to be a resurgence of memorials being presented, mostly at the local levels.  Naturally, much of this activity is generated by communities’ firefighters who are persistent in keeping the memory alive of the 343 murdered firefighters.

If you wish to plan a permanent memorial for your locality, here is a wonderful opportunity to acquire a treasured focal point for your monument, or remembrance area.  Chief Billy Goldfeder has passed along this letter from FDNY FF Lee Ielpi (Ret), the Father of FDNY FF Jonathan Ielpi who was killed at the WTC on that day:

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is accepting requests from organizations that would like to request a piece of World Trade Center steel. The steel was recovered from the World Trade Center site after September 11, 2001 and secured at JFK Airport by The Port Authority of NY and NJ until now.

The September 11th Families Association is proud to be part of this great effort to distribute steel to organizations interested in creating memorials. The steel withstood the most horrific attack on American soil that took the lives of 2,973 innocent people – one of whom was my son Jonathan Ielpi a Firefighter with FDNY Squad 288. This is an extraordinary opportunity to obtain a piece of World Trade Center steel.

The steel MUST be used in a memorial open to the general public such as in parks, fire/EMS/police stations, emergency service training grounds for uniformed personnel or places of public assembly. The steel is not intended for and may not be used in personal collections, sold or used for fundraising. All requests for steel MUST be in writing on official letterhead from an officer of the requesting agency, or a not for profit organization and will be verified.

Requests from departments outside the United States are welcome.

This is a rare opportunity to create a lasting memorial IN YOUR COMMUNITY honoring the lives lost and educating future generations about the events of September 11, 2001. Everyday, your service as a Firefighter, Police Officer, EMT or related emergency personnel demonstrates the power of good. A public memorial in YOUR community to the victims and heroes of 9/11 is a powerful way to insure their memory lives on.

The instructions on how to submit your request, and where to send it, along with a sample letter can be found HERE.

If your community or FD is holding a special commemorative event today, send us a brief note on what you’re doing and include a photo if you can.  We’ll post it for everybody to see and recognize your contribution.

Now let’s get the equipment checked out.  Make sure it’s looking good, too.  We’ll probably get some “drop-in” station visitors today.  I’ll get the coffee started.

Silver Bluff Gets A Boost From Firehouse Subs

IN APRIL OF THIS YEAR, FIREGEEZER TOLD YOU about the unfortunate situation in Aiken County, South Carolina, when a tornado swept through and demolished the Silver Bluff VFD’s firehouse.  (see the report from April 11 HERE.)  Along with the building, most of their equipment was destroyed as well as their two pumpers and a brush unit.

silver bluff

Yesterday (Wednesday) it was announced that Firehouse Subs has donated $28,000 to help the fire department recover.  The Augusta Chronicle reported:

Silver Bluff Assistant Chief Kevin Lancaster announced the grant Wednesday, saying it would help his department purchase a $10,000 thermal imaging camera as well as a $13,000 extrication device. The camera helps firefighters see whether someone is inside a burning building without having to go into the structure.

The extrication tool, commonly referred to as “the jaws of life,” will help free people trapped after an automobile accident. Mr. Lancaster said the new equipment is more effective on some newer vehicle designs.

Mr. Lancaster said his department was one of about 15 agencies nationwide to receive the grant from Firehouse Subs.

The Silver Bluff FD has also applied for a government stimulus grant to aid in rebuilding the firehouse.  The cost of replacing the building is approx. $50,000, but the insurance payout was only about $250,000.  Both of the pumpers were replaced by their insurance companies and they were able to erect a temporary building to operate out of while they rebuild.

IN MIDDLETOWN, CONNECTICUT, A WHOPPING 75% of the people who flood into the hospital emergency rooms are suffering from ordinary ailments and are not in need of emergency treatment.  (Much like every other city.)  Apparently these people who can’t manage their own lives are complaining about the long waits in these facilities that are designed for emergency medical care instead.

So the local hospitals have set up a website that you can check before you leave the house that tells you what the estimated waiting time is in each of the three hospitals’ ER’s.  That way you can pick out which one is currently giving faster service and drive over to that hospital.  Is that great, or what?

Fortunately, the room’s patio was just a few feet off the ground.  So while his wife was dialing 9-1-1, Richard ran into the hotel lobby and grabbed a fire extinguisher.  WVEC-TV takes over the story from here:

Virginia Beach Battalion Chief Steve Lasinski said that the fire was started by the overheated air conditioner.  He added that Beverge had largely extinguished the fire by the time the FD arrived, directly causing the fire to be contained  to the room where it started.
