Watch Out For Flying Corks !

IT’S NOT ONLY BULLETS (here) AND CANNONBALLS (here) THAT we have to watch out for these days.  The firefighters from Wamsutter, Wyoming, found this out on Thursday afternoon when a tractor-trailer hauling a load of bottled wine caught fire on I-80.  The intense fire caused the wine bottles to heat up and start exploding, sending the corks flying like a drunken firing squad.  The Rawlins Daily Times tells us:

”The corks were popping out of the bottles like the old Jiffy Pop we grew up with,” Wyoming Highway Patrol Lt. Scott Keane said.

The wines included Rieslings, Champagnes, merlot and pinot noir from vineyards such as Columbia Crest. The wines were listed as having a retail value of $20 to $50 per bottle.

The fire completely consumed both the trailer and the tractor as it also destroyed the asphalt pavement that it was sitting on.  A Wyoming DOT spokeswoman said, “There’s nothing left of the cab or trailer. There were a few bottles that didn’t explode,” but they vanished overnight.
