Firefighter Tries to Get Wife "Snuffed"

Comments Off

THIS MUST BE “MURDER WEEK” IN THE FIRE WORLD  (see our earlier posting just below).

A EUREKA SPRINGS, ARKANSAS, FIREFIGHTER is in jail today after trying to hire a so-called “hit man” to kill his wife for him.  According to the Eureka Springs police, Cody Harp paid money to a man who he thought was going to murder his wife for pay.  Unfortunately for Cody, the “hit man” was an undercover FBI agent.

KHBS-TV tells us:

Harp worked as a firefighter in Eureka Springs, served as a reserve police officer, and was even a member of the Carroll County SWAT team. Now, he’s being charged with putting a hit on his own wife.

cody-a

Cody Harp

Police said they learned that Harp was trying to hire a hit man to kill his wife last week.

”The information was that this individual was actively seeking someone to kill his wife, so we acted on it right away — as soon as we got it,” said Joe Barbalace, a detective with the Eureka Springs Police Department.

One of the reasons police brought in the FBI was because, as a firefighter, Harp would have recognized any of the Eureka Springs officers. Police also said Harp was in the process of divorcing his wife, and the couple was embroiled in a custody battle.

Harp’s chances of winning his custody battle diminished tremendously after he was photographed and recorded giving the undercover detective the cash and instructions on what he wanted done with the money.

TWO HIGH-RANKING OFFICIALS, ONE UNIFORMED AND ONE CIVILIAN, AT DALLAS FIRE-RESCUE left their jobs abruptly yesterday and Tuesday.  Assistant Chief John Cook, one of two chiefs brought in from outside last year by Fire Chief Eddie Burns, resigned suddenly on Tuesday and left his post immediately.

Leanne Siri-Edwards, a civilian who served as the department’s executive general manager, was called in to the Dallas City Manager’s office yesterday at lunch time and fired on the spot without explanation.  As she left the office she was immediately escorted from the building and her personal items were removed from her office and delivered to her outside the building.

Chief Burns, who worked with Siri-Edwards at the Fort Worth Fire Department, created the position for her in Dallas in an effort to help the department run more efficiently. But she was demoted in April and lost 30 percent of her pay.  Siri-Edwards then sued the city claiming that she and other female employees were subjects of sexual harassment in the department.

City Manager Mary Suhm declined to comment on the firing and would confirm only that Siri-Edwards had been terminated.  “The management of the city lost confidence in her ability to do the job effectively,” Suhm said.

Suhm also declined to comment on Chief Cook’s sudden departure.  “People resign all the time,” she said, noting that Cook turned in a letter of resignation. “He submitted one. We accepted it.”

Fire Chief Targeted for Murder

Comments Off

THE SMALL FARMING COMMUNITY OF ALLENTON, WISCONSIN, is stirring with the disclosure yesterday that a 59-yr.-old man attempted to hire somebody to murder their fire chief, John Breuer.  The man who was being solicited to kill him contacted the police and turned over a telephone recording that he made of Robert Belk offering to pay him $1,500 to shoot Breuer.

The incident has nothing to do with fire department operations other than it is the fire chief who is the victim.  Press reports are saying that it involved some conflict over a woman.

Last morning in his Quick Takes column, Dave Statter touched on a story HERE that I found disturbing and really upset me personally.  It was a report generated by KTUU-TV in Anchorage, Alaska, about a criminal act perpetrated against a wildfire team.  The Pioneer Peak Hotshots is one of those elite crews that travels all over to major wildfires and is planted behind the fire lines to work on containment.  Hot Shot crews normally work 2 weeks straight on the fire and then get a 4-day break back home before going on the next assignment.

But when the Pioneer Peak crew arrived back at their headquarters building the other day, the 25 firefighters were greeted with devastation.  While they were out working the fire, some cretins went into their property and thoroughly trashed the station, stole thousands of dollars worth of personal belongings  along with five of their personal automobiles.  The rest of the cars were heavily vandalized.

This just makes me sick.  I have no doubt that the Alaska State Police will spare no effort in bringing these uncivilized bums to justice.  Let’s all hope they catch them, and soon.

*  *  *

Meanwhile on the other side of the continent,  the Baltimore, Maryland, police department is showing where all those budget-cutting savings are going that the city has been implementing.  While the fire department has been laying off firefighters and closing down stations, on-duty police officers from the helicopter unit and the marine division staged a phony “raid” on a private boat owned by a state delegate who wanted to thrill his girlfriend while he proposed to her.  The Baltimore Sun has the full story HERE.

Naturally, while you’d put this in the “What were they thinking of ?!” file, I would expect that the firefighters’ Local would jump all over the mayor and city council for permitting a culture within the police dept. that squanders resources like this while fire stations are taken out of service.  It probably won’t do any good, but I’d sure be beating the big bass drum for a while over this fiasco.

Lastly, we have an update from the technology front.  Back in October of 2007 we briefly talked about the new Sony OLED (organic light-emitting diode) television being developed HERE.  This fascinating tv has a picture screen – monitor- that is only 3mm thick, about the thickness of an old silver dollar.

oled_2_1

The other day Sony announced that they are withdrawing the OLED’s from the production line because of costs and manufacturing problems.  The little 11-inch sets were being offered in Asia and Australia for about the same price as a 50-inch LCD set, so they weren’t selling so well.  Not only that, but 40% of the screens coming off the production line had to be dumped because of flaws.  Read CNet’s latest report on this HERE.

Sony had originally planned to introduce them in North America later this year.  Sony’s tv division is also on track to lose money for the 6th straight year, too.  So stopping production of this device makes sense.  Anyway, the LDC’s are getting thinner, use far less energy and still have brighter pictures.  Adios, OLED.

Now let’s make our own picture brighter and get this equipment checked out.  I want to get some more coffee started.  See you in the day room.

Kentucky FF Jailed on Child Porn Charges

A LEXINGTON, KENTUCKY, FIREFIGHTER WAS ARRESTED on August 13 and charged with downloading child pornography to his laptop computer while he was on duty in a fire station.

Eric Bradley, 37, is accused of downloading about 50 videos and more than 100 photographs onto his laptop. He allegedly obtained the material from December 2007 through December 2008 while connected to the cable Internet at the Lexington fire station at 1098 South Cleveland Road, according to court records.

eric-bradley

Eric Bradley

The FBI executed a search warrant on his house on the 13th and he admitted to the agents at the time that he had downloaded the pornography while at work.  Agents did not find any incriminating evidence during the raid last week, but they had already discovered videos and photographs that showed children ages 2 to 12 involved in sexual acts on his personal laptop that had been seized earlier.

While doing a city-wide sweep looking for that type of downloading activity, the agents noticed a number of occasions where an internet address assigned to the fire station was used for what probably was illegal downloading.  Investigation led them to Bradley who has been a Lexington firefighter since September, 2000.  He has been on paid administrative leave since July 3 and then he resigned on Aug. 13 following his arrest.  He had a bond hearing yesterday, but the U. S. Magistrate hearing his plea delayed his decision until next Monday saying, “Quite frankly, it’s a case that weighs pretty heavily on the scales I must consider.”  Until then Bradley remains in the Fayette County jail.

All of his relatives and long-time friends say that he has never been in trouble before and they have a hard time believing that he has gotten into this situation.

Can A Military Tank Travel 60 MPH?

THEY CAN IF YOU DON’T NEED TO PUT ANY PEOPLE IN THEM.  Twin brothers Geoff and Mike Howe, 34, set out to invent an ultra-fast tracked vehicle that could be useful for the military.  Utilizing modern guidance techniques that permit the tank to be operated remotely, they were able to shed the massive and heavy armor that current tanks require.

ripsaw-controls

The six-camera video transmitter sends a full 360º
view to the remote joy-stick style operations panel.

For the superstructure they used welded steel tubes similar to race car frames that are stronger, yet 50% lighter.  Coupled with an amazingly high suspension track of 14 inches they have developed a new generation of unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) that the U. S. Army was looking for.  Their biggest challenge was inventing a new design for the tread that would hold together at the high speeds that it can attain – up to 60 mph.  Currently the fastest tank built is the M1A Abrams which goes 42 mph.

This Fox News interview with the Brothers Howe includes some good video footage of the UGV doing some pretty remarkable maneuvers:

This brief video presented by Popular Science shows some of its agility:

There are several videos on YouTube that show it doing some amazing acrobatics as well as some high-speed drive-bys.  Just enter “Ripsaw” in the video search box.

The military anticipates using these types of vehicles for advance scouting ahead of the manned vehicles.  All the structural components of the Ripsaw are bolted together allowing for rapid replacement in the field.  Despite all of their attempts to cause a breakage or failure during their field tests, the worst thing that has happend was a broken shock absorber.  Yet the machine continued to function for several more hours after it happened.

More Arson Arrests

FROM TERRE HAUTE, INDIANA, COMES THE REPORT that two 10-yr.-old boys have been arrested for setting a fire that destroyed a Family Dollar Store on June 28 (Firegeezer report HERE).

terre-dollar-a

The Terre Haute Tribune-Star reports:

The boys admitted to starting the fire with a lighter using scrap pieces of paper, according to authorities.

The 10-year-olds told city Arson Investigator Norm Loudermilk “they were angry at an employee for correcting them and asking them to return a toy to a shelf” after they had knocked it to the floor. The boys set the fire during the day while people were in the store.

The arrest of the juveniles represents the 12th Terre Haute arson case solved so far this year, said Jeff Fisher, Terre Haute city fire chief.  The 12 solved cases have resulted in 20 arrests —17 by the fire department and three by the Drug Task Force and Terre Haute Police Department, officials announced Tuesday.  Of the 20 arrested, about a dozen have been juveniles, Fisher said.

A total of 29 arson cases have been reported this year.

30 Days and a Career

Comments Off

A TOLEDO, OHIO, FIRE LIEUTENANT WITH 20 YEARS OF SERVICE was forced to resign last month after pleading “no contest” to a burglary charge that led to his sentencing yesterday to 30 days in jail and 3 years of supervised probation.

Melvin Bond, 48, broke into his former girl-friend’s home in January and ransacked it after he became enraged from learning that she had been seeing someone else.

The Toledo Blade reports:

Bond, who was a lieutenant in the fire department, said the incident cost him his career and led to his financial ruin. He told the judge he would best be rehabilitated in an environment where he could begin rebuilding his life.

Assistant County Prosecutor J. Christopher Anderson countered that although rehabilitation is one aspect of a criminal sentence, punishment is the other. “There was a ripple effect that he created when he did this act,” he said, adding that several people were affected by his actions.

“It was clearly an act that was out of character for this defendant, but it was an act nonetheless that clearly had an impact on the victim,” Judge Frederick McDonald said, adding: “This type of conduct calls for incarceration.”

As part of the agreement, an additional charge of vandalism was dismissed and misdemeanor charges of domestic violence, assault, domestic violence threats, and menacing were to be dropped in Toledo Municipal Court.

A WAUSEON, OHIO, MAN WAS ARRESTED TUESDAY and charged with 14 counts of arson and insurance fraud connected with a downtown fire that destroyed seven business in April, 2007.

Charles Bryan was taken by Wauseon police to the Northwest Ohio corrections center where he was held until his arraignment in county court this afternoon.  He was the owner of a restaurant where the fire started.

WUPW-TV Toledo has this video reporting on the arrest:

Following the fire Bryan and his wife formed a company to develop the lots where the destroyed buildings stood, promising to rebuild his restaurant and other retail spaces.  A state development grant of $500,000 was approved to help pay for the $700,000 initial outlay, but several of the investors pulled out of the project earlier this year.

Suspicion was raised initially because just three months before the multi-million-dollar fire occurred there was a small fire set in the restaurant.  In May, 2007, the fire marshal announced that the destructive fire was an arson.

R. I. P. – R. D.

It was made public yesterday that Reader’s Digest will be filing a Chap. 11 bankruptcy and turning its ownership over to its primary creditors.  Most of us didn’t even know they were still in business anyway.  The one-time publishing giant that put Pleasantville, New York, on the map has been on a free-fall into oblivion for many years now.

rd-logo

It was 87 years ago that the small, pocket-sized magazine started publishing monthly selections of condensed articles from other magazines.  At a time when people could not afford to subscribe to several magazines, the RD brought a wide range of topics and information into millions of homes for a modest price.  It wasn’t until 1955 that they carried any advertising at all, the cost of publishing was entirely borne by subscription and newsstand sales.

For many decades it was easily identified by its practice of printing the table of contents on the front cover.  That was a slick sales gimmick.  Magazine rack browsers would pick one up and instantly find that there were some articles inside that interested them.  And their monthly selection of stories was marvelous in itself.  It just seemed like everything that they published was interesting.  And then of course they had their own specialty entries such as the Humor in Uniform column that they started up during WW II and continued afterward.  And who could ever forget the My Most Unforgettable Character stories every month?  A catch-phrase that still bounds around the world today.

rd-cover-a

It was this terrific ability to compile a selection of intriguing stories each month that not only brought a stable of the country’s best editors to Pleasantville, but propelled the magazine into the situation where the back issues were always kept and never thrown out.  In everybody’s home there would be a table over in the corner that held a pile of years-old issues of RD.  That’s because you could pick up any copy at any time and find something good to read.  They were ideal for doctors’ waiting rooms due to their condensed articles that could be read in five minutes or so.  I believe that National Geographic is the only other magazine that has that kind of longevity.

In the 1950′s they capitalized on their reputation and ability to “shrink” stories and started publishing the Reader’s Digest Condensed Books which were hardbacked books that had four or five of the recent best-selling novels abridged down to 50 or 60 pages.

rd-condensed-books

And don’t forget the sweepstakes games where you’d mail in your entry to try and win gazillions of dollars in their secret drawing.  They were proud of the fact that it was published in 21 languages and distributed all around the world.

But somewhere along the way, after the founding Wallace family retired in 1973, the magazine changed its focus and that started the migration of its readership base away from the legendary publication.  Two years ago the RD was purchased in a leveraged buyout by a private equity group for $2.8 billion, most of which was debt assumption.  Their current plan is to turn over all their assets to a group of debt-holders who will infuse another $1.5 billion into the restructured company and then attempt to turn the business around and restore the RD to profitability.  I’m not holding my breath on that one.

But time marches on and most good things eventually come to an end.  We were lucky, we got to experience the Reader’s Digest.  Now let’s start experiencing some equipment checking.  I need to get more coffee started.

Errant Car Crashes Into Fire Station

Firefighter Humor & "United Breaks Guitars"

THERE IS A LITTLE BIT OF ALL OF  US IN DAVE CARROLL’S VIRAL VIDEO. Dave Carroll is a Halifax musician who had a bad travelling experience:

In the spring of 2008, Sons of Maxwell were traveling to Nebraska for a one-week tour and my Taylor guitar was witnessed being thrown by United Airlines baggage handlers in Chicago. I discovered later that the $3500 guitar was severely damaged.

They didn’t deny the experience occurred but for nine months the various people I communicated with put the responsibility for dealing with the damage on everyone other than themselves and finally said they would do nothing to compensate me for my loss.

So I promised the last person to finally say “no” to compensation (Ms. Irlweg) that I would write and produce three songs about my experience with United Airlines and make videos for each to be viewed online by anyone in the world. (read more HERE)

The first video was released on YouTube on July 6th. Within two days it became a viral sensation. Today more than 5 million have viewed the first video.

Smells Like Teen Stupid

Taken from Chez Pazienza’s DEUS EX MALCONTENT blog (HERE). Chez is a former network news producer/manager.

Oh Today Show, I’ve missed you so.

Remember when the world practically came to an end in the mid-90s because a couple of really dumb kids lit themselves on fire after watching Beavis and Butthead? Well, that show’s been off the air for more than a decade and apparently its absence has done nothing to stop the epidemic of retarded teen pyromania.

Last week, 13-year-old Russell Gortzig of Deltona, Florida (of course) let a friend pour gasoline on his shorts which he then lit on fire with a cigarette lighter. Needless to say, Russell went up like a white trash Hindenburg; he now has third degree burns on most of his lower body — which on the positive side might prevent him from ever being able to reproduce.

Turns out Russell and his friend were imitating a clip they’d seen on YouTube. And so this morning the kid, his mother and the older sister who was charged with watching Russell and making sure he didn’t do something stupid like, say, lighting himself on fire all appeared on the Today Show to — wait for it — warn parents about the dangers of the internet.

We will always have work when parents and adolescents fail to take responsibility for their actions.

As for Russell himself, he said he wasn’t to blame for what happened to him. “I didn’t wanna do it. But after my friend poured the gas on me, he dared me to light the lighter, so, ya know, I just did. But it wudn’t my fault.”

Elderly Couple Killed by Wild Dogs

Comments Off

RESIDENTS OF OGLETHORPE COUNTY, GEORGIA, ARE stunned after learning that two prominent citizens were killed by a pack of wild dogs over the weekend.

Lothar Schweder, 77, and his wife Sherry, 66, were both employed at the nearby University of Georgia.  Lothar was a professor of German studies and his wife was a long-time bibliographer in the university library.

Sherry often went for walks in their rural neighborhood and set out Friday evening on one.  When she didn’t return after an abnormal time, Lothar got in his car and set out looking.  Evidence indicates that Sherry had been attacked and mauled by a pack of wild dogs that lives in the area and when her husband found her he got out of the car to help her and he was then attacked and killed also.

On Saturday morning a passing neighbor found the Schweders’ car in the middle of the road and the two bodies on either side of it.

The Associated Press has this video report:

Jim Fullington, GBI Special Agent in Charge of the Athens office said autopsies confirmed the cause of death Monday. “The preliminary results of both autopsies indicate that both Mr. and Mrs. Schweder died as a result of injuries received of multiple animal bites and we are assuming dog bites,” he said.

Sheriff’s deputies and animal control officers have captured 9 adult animals and 4 juveniles so far.

Research Help Needed

ONE OF OUR LONG-TIME READERS, Assistant Chief Wayne Kewitsh of the Richfield Fire Department in Minnesota is asking for some help:

“Do you happen to know of any resources discussing the use of fire poles, primarily studies indicating injury rates, etc.? Everything we’ve found so far has been anecdotal, although we did speak with a CalOSHA official attached to LA County FD who said they consider them safer than having a firefighter run down stairs at 02:00.

We’re building a new, two-story station and everyone is trying to figure out which has the highest injury incidence, poles, slides or stairs.”

If you’ve got some leads or tips for him, post them in the Comments.  Thanks!

Long Island Fire Official Charged With Theft of Department Funds

THE FORMER CLERK SUPERVISOR OF THE NORTH BELLMORE Fire District in Nassua County, New York, was arrested yesterday (Monday) and charged with grand larceny.

John Carbone, 46, was a 24-yr. employee of the fire district and was earning more than $95,700 annually when he allegedly pilferred a check for $38,743.70 from the department and deposited it in his personal checking account two years ago in August, 2007.

carbone-a

John Carbone

Newsday is reporting:

District Attorney Kathleen Rice said in a statement that Carbone, who was clerk supervisor of the North Bellmore district, received a $38,743 check for the district from the Hartford Insurance Co. about July 2, 2007. The check was reimbursement for an overpayment of fees the district had paid Hartford on a fire district annuity fund.

A month later, Carbone deposited the check into his personal bank account and withdrew the funds, using the money to pay his bills and expenses, officials said.

During an internal audit of the fire district’s finances, an accountant found that the reimbursement check was never deposited in the district’s account.

Carbone was place on leave in January, 2008, then put on unpaid suspension two months later.  In May of last year he resigned his position.

He has been charged with 3rd-degree grand larceny and official misconduct.  He faces up to seven years in prison if convicted.  After his arrest yesterday he was released without bail and is scheduled to return to court on August 27.

Dozens Dead, Missing After Turbine Room Explosion

AN EXPLOSION AND SUBSEQUENT FLOODING IN A TURBINE generating room in Russia has left at least 12 dead and more than 60 other missing.  The blast occurred Monday deep in the bowels of the Sayano-Shushenskaya hydroelectric plant in Siberia.  It is the world’s 4th-largest hydroelectric dam and Russia’s largest electric power generator.

russia-b-sky-news

The early reports say that workmen were making repairs  inside the massive concrete structure when an explosion occurred by causes not yet known.  Vladimir Markin, a spokesman for Russia’s general prosecutor’s office, told the Itar-Tass news service that the accident occurred when a transformer exploded during repairs, cracking the walls and ceiling and causing water to fill an engine room.  However they are claiming that the dam itself was not damaged.

Most, if not all, of the missing workers are believed to have drowned in the internal flooding of the generating areas.  Within hours after the event, there was a 10-sq.-mile oil slick on the river.  Officials are saying that it will take 3 to 8 days to drain the water from the flooded area and probably 4 years or more to repair all the damage.

Al-Jazeera has a good video report:

The plant provides electricity for five major industries including the world’s largest aluminum producing plant.  Power to those industries will need to be cut back significantly not only to compensate for the lost capacity, but to be able to provide enough power for the upcoming heating season and their early winter arrives soon.

There are reportedly 1,200 rescue workers on the scene but there is little hope that any of the 64 missing have survived.  There are three groups of divers on scene and a special underwater robot is being delivered to the site.

Morning Lineup – August 18

We’ll start off today by pointing out a “must read” article on another blog.  Today marks the 50th anniversary of what is called the Southwest Boulevard Fire in Kansas City.  It involved a gasoline fueling depot that used above-ground tanks and the hot, mid-summer fire killed five firefighters while destroying most of a city block.

One of the things that makes it a landmark event was that the resulting explosion of one of the gasoline storage tanks led to the creation of the term BLEVE.  Dave Statter has taken a lot of time to prepare an excellent accounting of the fire including some news film footage and local television programming of the day, and he has it posted this morning in remembrance of the tragic event.

It took place near the Missouri/Kansas state line and units from both K. C. departments were working the fire.  Of the 64 firefighters that were injured by the explosion and rocketing tank, the Fire Chiefs of both departments were two of them.  Today there will be a special ceremony at the permanent memorial that sits at the site conducted by both departments.

Dave’s special remembrance and history is detailed and filled with information, so it will take more than a minute or two to read through it.  After we get the equipment checked out and you get a fresh cup, take the time to read this fine article at STATter911 HERE.

*  *  *

I hope that the readers of this site who work in fire marshal’s offices have taken heed of yesterday’s article about a cellphone triggering the igniter of a gas stove HERE.  This is an example of how the internet can truly benefit the sharing of knowledge in a timely manner and get the word all over North America in an instant.

Previously, we would have never heard of this incident and similar situations could be springing up here and there with never a hint of what and why they happened.  But now, with me posting an obscure story from a local newspaper and then you relaying the information onto, say, specialized fire marshal web forums, within hours this new possible source of fire-cause is known everywhere and field investigators have another clue in their quiver to use onsite.  I think that’s great.

And I also think that it’s time to get this equipment checked out, too.  I’ll go start some more coffee and catch you later in the day room.

Looking For The Ignition Source?

EVERY NOW AND THEN YOU GET THE “MYSTERY” SMOKE that you just can’t find out what started it or where.  Using patience and leaning on your experience, normally you’ll find it eventually and file it away in the memory databank for future recall in similar situations.

But here’s a new one for everybody that was discovered by the tenant of a Brooklyn apartment.  Andrei Melnikov has a Sony Erickson PDA and last Monday it was sitting next to his gas range when it rang.  After answering his phone, Melnikov heard a faint beeping sound but it didn’t register with him.  Minutes later his kitchen was filling up with smoke.

Investigation led him to look inside the oven where he found a plastic kitchen utensil melting under the heat of the oven’s temperature.  But he had never turned the oven on.  After calling in his landlord, between the two of them they worked out that the ringing phone had triggered the electronic chip that signals the gas oven to fire up.  They ran an experiement and did it again.

Then they let WINS video record the phenomena for this report:

The stove is a Maytag Magic Chef gas range.  A Maytag repairman showed up and ordered a replacement part that he thinks will correct the problem, but the company says they have never had this occur before.  They are looking into it.

For the details of this strange chain of events, read the entire STORY HERE.

Locomotive Fire Sends Hundreds Trackside

A CANADIAN VIA RAIL PASSENGER LOCOMOTIVE CAUGHT FIRE Sunday night as the train was passing through a swampland in Ontario.  The train was traveling from Toronto to Ottawa at approx. 8 pm when the fire broke out on the loco.

After bringing the train to a stop, the two engineers attempted to extinguish the fire with hand extinguishers, but were unable to put it out.  After confirming that the track had been shut down to other traffic, they began evacuating the 324 passengers out through the rear of the train and walking them down the track to the nearest crossing which was 1.2 miles away.

With smoke and fire showing from the lead end of the train,
the 324 passengers exited from the rear car onto the tracks.
(passenger-submitted photo via CTV)

By then the fire department personnel were on the scene to assist in the evacuation.  The only injuries reported from passengers were a few twisted ankles and thousands of bug bites as they had to walk through clouds of mosquitoes in the swamp.  The two enginemen were treated for smoke inhalation later and released.  True to their calling, they never left the train until all of their passengers were safely on their way.

Via Rail dispatched 6 buses to the crossing to carry the passengers on to Ottawa, arriving there at 1 am, nearly five hours after their scheduled arrival.

The fire was never challenged by firefighters because of its isolated position.  It burned itself out, causing about $800,000 in damage.

The Day the Music Stopped

AN 11-YR.-OLD GIRL WAS VACATIONING with her grandparents on Anglesey Island, Wales.  Their car was parked at a campground and the girl was sitting inside of it listening to music on the radio when she inadvertantly disengaged the handbrake that was holding the car in place.

As it began rolling toward the edge of the 250-ft. precipice that overlooks the sea, she vainly tried to apply the brake without success.  As it picked up speed rolling through the campground it ran over several tents, dragging them along with it.  Fortunately, there were no people in them at the time.

Just feet short of needing the rescue squad, she bailed out of the car.

This video report from the Press Association shows how close her call was:

Sky News REPORTS:

First to the scene was Dave Massey, a paramedic and RNLI volunteer.

He said: “It is a miracle she survived and that she had the presence of mind to jump out at the last second.

“There is no doubt that she would never have survived that fall. The vehicle plummeted down the sheer drop and crashed into rocks before being submerged in water.

RNLI and Coastguard teams searched the water to check for any other casualties but confirmed no one else was hurt in the incident.

Updated, 3:30 pm:

A LEE COUNTY EMS HELICOPTER CRASH-LANDED SHORTLY AFTER MIDNIGHT this morning in Lee County, Florida.  The air ambulance was heading to Upper Captiva Island (near Fort Myers) when it crashed into the Intra-Coastal Waterway while responding to a medical emergency call for a head injury.  No patients were on board at the time of the crash.

An EMS helicopter from Hendry County was dispatched to transport the three crew members to the Lee Memorial Hospital where early reports say that all three are in good condition.

The Fort Myers News-Press is reporting:

The Medstar helicopter was submerged in 6 feet of water when it landed in the intercoastal waterway and the three crew members were able to successfully escape, said Lee County Medstar spokeswoman Rick O’Neal.

“It’s a credit to the training they received from the Lee County Sheriff’s Office,” O’Neal said. “I’m convinced that training saved their lives.”

O’Neal said the cause of the crash is still under investigation.

Authorities would like to remove the aircraft from the water. O’Neal said she’s not sure if the helicopter will be salvageable since it was in salt water.

The crew consisted of pilot Diana Tackett and medics Jason Ausman and Dave Duncan. The crew members were taken to a hospital but discharged hours ago, O’Neal said.

O’Neal said Tackett had more than 10 years of experience flying Medstar helicopters.
