A RALEIGH, NORTH CAROLINA, TILLER TRUCK ROLLED OVER THIS MORNING just before 11 am Eastern. The truck was responding to a fire call when it wrecked. There were no other vehicles involved.  It appears that it was going around a corner when it flipped.

The truck had four firefighters on board, three of them were transported to the hospital. Two of the three had serious but non-life threatening injuries.

WTVD-TV has a good video report HERE.

The truck is five years old and is stationed at Fire Station 1.

Yikes!!!! Lookit that flattened tiller box! Capt. Schmoe to all you young engineers, slow the heck down. Although these newer rigs go like hell and brake reasonably well, they are still big, heavy rigs and the laws of physics still apply.

I’m not saying I know what happened here, I’m just sayin.

Joe beat me to it. How the tillerman got out of that unscathed is a miracle. And he also beat me to the other- being someone who teaches people how to use tillered aerials, I can tell you that they act a little differently than the family roadster. I don’t know what happened here either, but when a TDA is going around a corner, it is one of the times it is at its most vulnerable to a roll. And before someone says, “How else are they going to roll?” well, if you are going straight and the tillerman decides to bring the rear out of line from the tractor and the chauffeur happens to brake- well, that’s another one. Try THAT in your engine.
