Talk about crazy gasoline prices… Ok, I will. I stopped in my local fueling station yesterday to fill up my gas tank and the place was jammed. It’s one of those combination store-snack bar-gas stations with 14 pumps out front, and I had to wait for a slot to open. I think it’s because the price of regular was 30¢ a gallon cheaper than it was two days before. And that’s just before a 3-day holiday weekend, too.
I read somewhere last week that gasoline inventories are remarkably high right now because people have cut way back on their driving lately. So consider this as another tip on how to take advantage of the current economic downturn. Not only are gasoline prices taking a dip, but traditional vacation venues are cutting rates at hotels and destination sites to try and restore some business that has fallen off lately. This will be a good year to take that special vacation trip.

It looks like the Boston firefighters are going to take a run at Montreal’s title of showing the most inventive-kookiness when it comes to labor vs. management issues. I got a kick out of yesterday’s stunt of “mannng” the temporarily-closed firehouses with off-duty FF’s and radioing in that “Volunteer engine 20 is in service.” (Scroll down to see our report.) I liked that one. But they’re still a far distant 2nd to Montreal. Those are the guys who poured Crazy Glue into the door locks of all the battalion chiefs’ offices and then painted their windows black. That’s hard-core conflict resolution there.

As I mentioned earlier, we’re heading into a 3-day weekend to celebrate Independence Day on Saturday with the big fireworks displays and lots of backyard cookouts and picnics coming up. So it’s time for me to pass along my custom recipe that is guaranteed to make your hot dogs (and bratwursts) the best in town. Take a few minutes to mix this special topping and you’ll be the neighborhood hero. Here it is:
Firegeezer’s Stadium Mustard
-
(1) 8-oz. jar of French’s basic yellow mustard. Empty that into a bowl and add:
-
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
-
1 teaspoon Tabasco sauce
-
half-teaspoon of onion powder.
Blend all the ingredients together thoroughly with a whisk and then spoon back into the squeeze bottle.
Note: Avoid the temptation to “add a little extra” of any of the ingredients. This is perfect just the way I wrote it and any alterations will degrade the product.
And there you have it – perfect hot dog mustard. It’s my creation, but you are free to share it with your friends and relatives. But not until we get this equipment checked out. I’ve got to go make another pot of coffee.
