Morning Lineup – June 27

Comments Off

I think I’ll just clean out the In Box this morning by mentioning and linking some items that I found interesting, but didn’t have time to comment or report on properly.  So let’s get started…

As we mentioned two weeks ago HERE, Microsoft has officially announced a plan to provide free upgrades to Win 7 for anybody who purchases a home PC or laptop between now and October 22 when the new OS will come available.  They’re also permitting people who now have Vista to buy and upgrade for their existing computer and an introductory price of $49.99 for the Home Premium version.  But the catch there is that you have to do a “clean install” if you are upgrading from an XP machine.  PCWorld defines that process as:  A clean install wipes the hard drive — erasing all data and applications — before installing the new operating system. In a clean install, users must back up data, then later restore that data and manually reinstall all applications. Microsoft will ease some of the transition with a special utility designed to back up data and some Windows settings.

Digital dunces like myself would probably do well to avoid that maneuver.  The special price for the existing upgrade only lasts through July 11 for some reason.  PCWorld has a good Q & A article on this transition HERE.

Dave Statter ran THIS VIDEO of the Los Angeles ambulance leaving Michael Jackson’s home with his body on board.  What makes the clip interesting is the Celebrity Homes tour bus standing by watching it too.  But what caught my attention was the FF’s, even though they had an urgent transport to make, still following the good practice of using a spotter when backing up.  It was just this past Tuesday that we were talking about that HERE.  If you listen, you can hear the backup warning sounding, too.

It seemed like yesterday was “Firefighter Crime Day” in the U. S.  We had three stories ourselves on a range of illegal activities including arsons, embezzlement, and keep-away with a fire dog.  There were a couple more that I just didn’t have time to put together a posting for.  One was this tale from Pittsburgh about a firefighter who spent some of his days off calling in false alarms so that he could slip into the firehouse and pilfer some cash out of the FF’s lockers.  You can read about that one HERE.

And just to the west in Columbus, Ohio,  comes the strange tale of a firefighter who shot his dogs dead in his basement so that he wouldn’t have to pay the kennel fees while he went on vacation.  The story surfaced after he was convicted on animal cruelty charges this week.  The Columbus Dispatch can tell you MORE.

Let’s hope we can find some better happenings today in the fire/rescue world.  Maybe a good “stop” or a successful rescue?  One nice thing that is going to happen at my house …. Saturday is hamburger day every week.  Mmmmm.

We’d better get this equipment checked out.  I’m late with the fresh coffee already.
