Possible Serial Arsonist in Ontario

Comments Off

THE LONDON, ONTARIO, POLICE AND FIRE INVESTIGATORS have now been joined by the Ontario Fire Marshal Office in investigating a string of perhaps 20 suspicious fires that have been set in the last few months.

Most of them have been vacant buildings and one of them was a hotel, destroyed on May 12.  This past Thursday a house that was boarded up after having a fire just three days earlier was burned again and gutted.

This past Sunday police arrested two men who were caught lighting a box on fire next to a vacant house and they were charged with arson.  The London police chief says that they have some leads, but so far they don’t have enough evidence to make an arrest for any other outstanding cases.  A lot of the arsons are still awaiting results from the forensic lab.

FROM SOUTHERN CHINA REUTERS IS REPORTING that Chinese health authorities are putting a stop to restaurants serving chickens which have been bitten to death by poisonous snakes and cooked up for a supposedly detoxing meal.

A small number of eateries in Guangdong province have been preparing the unique poultry dish amidst the complaints of many people and the Chinese media.

“Not only is it cruel and blood-thirsty, but totally amoral,” the Chongqing Business Daily cited a neighbor to one of the restaurants as saying.

Health authorities in Guangdong have already told restaurants to stop serving “poisonous snake-bitten chicken” and now those in Chongqing have joined in.

“Although nobody has been poisoned, this at the very least is an irregular way of slaughtering poultry,” the business newspaper quoted a local health official as saying.

Sina Video, the Chinese equivalent of YouTube, is carrying a video that shows a cook demonstrating how to coax a poisonous snake to kill the chicken for the fresh dish.

Atlanta Parking Garage Collapse Update

Comments Off

SO FAR THERE HAVE BEEN NO VICTIMS FOUND IN THE PILE of concrete flooring and automobiles in the parking deck in Atlanta that collapsed during Monday’s lunch hour.  In addition, no missing people have been reported.  For the initial reports on this incident, see the Firegeezer posting HERE.

atlanta2-a

WSBT-TV is reporting:

“At this point, we still haven’t found any signs of any victims,” Atlanta Fire and Rescue spokesman Bobby Stewart said. “We are going to search every corner, every confined space, every vehicle to make sure no victim is left behind.”

The search stalled during the night when the building shifted. It took fire crews several hours to shore up the building. At least 38 cars were caught in the collapse.

“Overnight, I would say we have made very good progress,” said Atlanta Fire Battalion Chief Steven Woodworth said.

2 More FF Arsonists

Comments

TWO VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTERS IN JACKSON COUNTY, ALABAMA, were arrested yesterday on arson charges following a grand jury indictment.

The fire in question occurred on March 8 and after investigation was determined to have been intentionally set.  Officers believe that three men, all in their mid-twenties, deliberately set more than one fire so that two of them could race back to the fire station and respond on the fire call.

24-year-old Travis Edward Wallace from Woodville and 23-year-old Casey Duane Wilkinson from Scottsboro were both firefighters with the Woodville Volunteer Fire Department.  Jackson County Sheriff’s deputies are still looking for the third suspect, 26-year-old Edward Lee Childress, who’s not a volunteer firefighter.

Ambulance Money-Grab in Kansas

Comments

IF THE AIRLINES CAN DO IT, THEN WHY NOT THE AMBULANCE SERVICES?  The local AMR ambulance service told the Shawnee County, Kansas, commissioners last night that overweight people and others who are critically injured require more manpower and equipment to be cared for.

The County Commissioners agreed and approved raising the rates for critical care patients and patients who weigh more than 350-pounds from $629 to $1172.  The new rates will go into effect on July 1 except for Medicare and Medicaid patients whose fees are set by federal regulations.

The Topeka Capital-Journal adds:

The higher price for critical care patients will pay for an additional care technician and medical equipment, including vents, medical pumps, I.V. and cardiac monitors during their rides, said Ken Keller, AMR Topeka director.

Critical care patients, Keller said, are the more unstable patients that AMR transports from more limited or “lower care” facilities to “higher care” hospitals. The technicians who transport them must complete a 240-hour course taught by doctors and nurses.

Keller said AMR needed to increase its charge for bariatric patients to pay for more manpower and transportation equipment. The bariatric equipment includes extra large and reinforced cots, as well as a winch to help technicians load the patients into the back of the ambulance.

“These people have special needs during transport,” Keller said of the bariatric patients. “Many of these people don’t fit our standard cots. Our normal cots will hold over 500 pounds, but when you max out the ability of the cot, you put the patients at risk. Having these resources means a little less manpower and a much safer way to lift the patients.”

“I don’t think a lot of people are aware about the number of bariatric patients we see,” Keller said. “We have a number of people in this town between 500 and 600 pounds that the general public never sees.”

Morning Lineup – June 30

Wow… the last day of the month.  That’s payday here, and now we’re heading into the summer doldrums.  I’ve got a few odds’n'ends sitting on the desktop that I could dispose of here to help close things out.

First of all, since we brought up the Billy Mays story the other day, the coroner says that it’s most likely that he died from the effects of hypertensive heart disease.  He can’t say that officially until the toxicology tests are completed, but he’s certain that’s what the outcome will be.  He found no evidence of any head trauma as a result of the airplane accident the day before.  I’m wondering if that illness is so hard to detect that a good physical exam wouldn’t find it?  What a shame.

Firefighter Nation (http://www.firefighternation.com/ ) is closing in on 40,000 members.  They’ll hit the mark sometime in the next few days.  Now that is truly a remarkable achievement.

One of those “We had a call like that, once.” stories popped up yesterday from Waterville, Maine.  It’s more of a police story, but since they did call the ambulance for this guy, I can stretch the relevency of the topic to be included here.  I’ll just link to the newspaper account and let you read it, but it has to do with a young man jumping up and down on the hood of a car while wearing nothing but his underpants and covered with “…a pink substance believed to be Pepto-Bismol.”  I wouldn’t be surprised if it was the Happy Medic that ran the call.  Here’s the STORY.

Speaking of the Happy Medic, you’ll probably enjoy reading his brief history of why the FD’s use “bugles” as a sign of rank HERE.

When we guided you to the revamped Western Pennsylvania Firefighting website the other day (HERE), we wondered aloud why they call it “Hoopie World.”  Well, Jeff decided to tell the tale of how that name came about.  It has to do with some folks referring to Hoopies and Whackers.  Read the background on this regional slang HERE and be sure you read far enough to catch the “You know you might be a Whacker when…..” listing.

Before we start getting ready for the July 4th weekend, we’d better get this equipment checked out now.  I’m going to start a fresh pot.  We’ll meet back in the day room in a little while.

Atlanta Parking Deck Collapses

Comments Off

A MULTI-STORY PARKING DECK IN ATLANTA, GEORGIA, had a partial collapse around 12:20 this afternoon during the lunch hour.  A center portion of the fourth floor suddenly fell and everything below it pancaked down to the bottom level, smashing and trapping about 35 automobiles.

Firefighters from Atlanta along with DeKalb and Cobb Counties are on the scene.  At first they were prevented from entering until it was determined that there was not going to be any additional structure failure.  US & R crews have now stabilized the damaged area and a full primary search has found nobody trapped or injured in the collapse zone.

The overall structure is intact as well as the entrance and ramp.  After additional shoring is completed the police search dogs will go through the entire 6-story garage for a complete sweep for any victims.    The FD expects to be on the scene for 24 hours or longer.  There is no immediate information as to what caused the collapse.

Supreme Court Backs Firefighters !

Comments

Update, 2:50 pm:  Link to full ruling and videos added.  Scroll down.

THE U. S. SUPREME COURT HANDED DOWN ITS DECISION this morning on the appeal by New Haven, Connecticut, firefighters who claimed they were unfairly denied promotions because of their race.

The Court’s ruling overturning the lower Appeals Court’s denial was decided on a 5 – 4 vote.

Six years ago, in 2003, the New Haven Fire Dept. held a promotional examination to establish a list of qualified applicants to fill vacancies for Fire Captain and Fire Lieutenant.  The final score for the exam was weighted 60% for the written portion of the exam and 40% for the oral interview.

In order to preclude any difficulties arising from racial discrimination accusations, the city hired a “diversity testing firm” for $100,000 to design a race-neutral examination.  Yet when the test results were compiled, the top members on the list were all white applicants and one hispanic.  The rest of the protected class members were so far down the list that they would not be promoted from it.

The city Civil Service Board was unhappy with the results (they were hoping for a happy racial mix that reflected the population distribution) and arbitrarily threw out the examination results.  They claimed that they did that to prevent being sued by minority groups.

The top scorers on the list then filed a reverse-discrimination suit against the city and it has been wending its way through the courts now for five years.  In that time, no vacancies have been filled while the open slots have been apportioned to lower-level officers filling them on an “acting” basis, including some members who failed the promotional exam that is contested.

The complainants lost their initial trial and were rebuffed by the Court of Appeals who upheld the city’s actions.  On January 9 of this year the Supreme Court agreed to accept the appeal from the New Haven, Connecticut, firefighters in the case known as Ricci v. DeStefano.

Update, 2:50 pm:

THE WISCONSIN STATE FIREFIGHTERS MEMORIAL will be holding their annual Ride of Remembrance on Saturday, July 25.  This event is not only a day of camaraderie, but a fund-raiser for the Firefighters Memorial Park that was created to honor the Wisconsin firefighters that have died in the line-of-duty.

bikers-c

The WSFM website tells:

On April 16, 1996 then Governor Tommy G. Thompson signed into law, legislation designating Wisconsin Rapids as the site of the Wisconsin State Firefighters Memorial. “Wisconsin firefighters put their lives on the line every time they battle a blaze and it is only fitting that we honor those who were lost in the line of duty,” Gov. Thompson said. “The State Firefighters Memorial is a tremendous project that will make sure we never forget the courage, bravery and dedication of our firefighters. And Wisconsin Rapids is an ideal location for the memorial because of its central location in the state.”

With the city chosen, the Wisconsin State Firefighters Memorial Board of Directors set about finding a suitable existing park in the city to house the memorial. They placed the utmost importance on peaceful locations without high traffic or an industrial image. After a careful examination of the sites in the area, the memorial committee selected Ben Hansen Park on the southwest side of the city. The park is along the west side of the Wisconsin River, providing the peaceful and somber atmosphere the memorial requires. In addition, the park’s existing tall trees and rolling terrain add greatly to the tranquility and serenity of the location, making it the perfect place for the memorial.

Every year since, the firefighters of Wisconsin have been improving the park and working on the long-range plan that includes the already-completed fire bell structure and some others.  They are currently building a visitor center.

The Ride of Remembrance is held in a different area of the state each year and normally has 500+ motorcycles with over 700 participants who travel the 100-mile selected route.

bikers-a

This year the ride will start in Sauk City and end at the Hutisford Firemen’s Park.  Registration on-site will open at 8:30 am, but pre-registration is available.  The fee is $30, $50 for 2-up, and includes both lunch and the evening pig roast dinner.

It looks like a grand time and a great way to spend a summer’s Saturday.  Even if you can’t make it, be sure to take the time to check out the Memorial’s excellent website HERE.  The online registration info is on the site, too.

I always check the Sunday newspaper sale ads from the electronics stores.  It’s not that I’m one of those “have to have everything” kind of guys (I’m not), but I like to keep up with what’s available and follow the progress and improvements of digital doo-dads.

That’s what led me to notice an offering from one of the office supply mega-stores for an HP laptop computer that’s being advertised on sale this week.  It’s obviously been designed for the extra-wide laps of our increasingly obese population, I guess, because it has a 16-inch screen on it.  And that extra width allows them to restore the numeric keypad to the right of the keyboard.

hp-g60-440us

HP G60-440us

But look what else you get with it:  A built-in webcam and microphone; Wi-Fi (they all have that now); 3 GB memory; 320 GB hard drive; and a battery that’s advertised to last 2 hrs., 45 mins.  And the price for this machine?  Only $500.  It weighs 6.5 lbs. though.  But we’re talking digital power here!

I don’t see how they can sell them for that little and still keep their R&D and factories going.  You’ve got to have a worthwhile markup in it before you can be profitable.  And this is retail, includes the retailer’s markup and transportation costs, etc., etc.  Amazing.

Of course that includes the free upgrade to Windows 7, but I think I’d rather wait until they come with it already installed.

Hey, we’d better get this equipment checked out.  We’ve got all the Monday weekly stuff to do, too.  I’ll slide on in to the kitchen and get more coffee started.  See you back in the day room.

Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, Fire Chief Terminated Immediately

After a month following his suspension on May 29, Fire Chief Jackie Carner was fired on Friday effective immediately.  He had been on administrative leave with pay for undisclosed violations of city policy.  When his termination was announced Friday evening, city officials would not elaborate on the alleged violations, although they said for the first time that insubordination was among the reasons for Carner’s firing.   Carner had been placed on suspension by then-City Manager Jim Twombly who was fired by the city council last week.

IAFF Local 2551 has been supportive of the chief through all of this.  The entire episode has been played out in a manner puzzling to the citizens:

  • May 29 – Carner put on admin. leave.
  • June 3 – Officials say that none of the alleged violations were criminal.  Hearing scheduled for June 17.
  • June 12 – City Council announces that they will be considering a “separation agreement” with the city manager, Jim Twombly.
  • June 15 – The city council votes 5 – 0 to terminate the city manager who had been on the job for five years.  Separation effective in two days.
  • June 17 – Hearing on fire chief suspension postponed until June 24.
  • June 26 – Council discloses the results of the hearing and announces that the FC will be separated effective immediately.  He had been on the job for 11 months.

California Fire Chief Dismissed Over Policy Decisions

Late Thursday evening the Rodeo-Hercules Fire District in Contra Costa County, Calfornia, voted to fire their fire chief, but they will be sending him out with a golden parachute.  Gary Boyles was sent packing because he required the firefighters who were on the squad that gets called up on forestry missions to pass the same physical fitness test that the forestry firefighters are required to pass.

Boyles will retire on June 30 but will continue to be a district employee with no duties until June 2011 when he will complete 10 years of employment and be eligible for their retirement system. During the next two years he will receive one year’s salary of $162,180.

The Examiner tries to explain the whole mess HERE.  Be sure you read the part about the fire commissioner’s comments about 5-ft. 2-inch women firefighters.

Reno Fire Chief Resigns Under Pressure

Reno, Nevada, Fire Chief Paul Wagner announced this week that he will be resigning his position effective July 20.  He had been heavily criticised by both the firefighters and the city manager following some controversial decisions.

In September the IAFF Local 731 passed a vote of no confidence 287 – 31 based largely on his gamesmanship with overtime expenditures.  The city council was also unhappy with his highly inaccurate estimates on how much the city would save by closing the main fire station.

There were some additional similar problems and the Reno Gazette-Journal spells out the full story HERE.

Wagner was hired on as fire chief in August, 2005.  Prior to then he was the fire chief of Omaha, Nebraska.

INDIVIDUALS DRIVE CHANGE IN FIRE SUPPRESSION PRACTICES. FDNY Battalion Chief Jerry Tracy described his frustration after a wind-driven multiple-family dwelling fire singed some of his members a little over a year ago.

He was frustrated because FDNY just completed wind-driven research with NIST at Governor’s Island. The results, when combined with the Columbus and Chicago experiments, showed new methods in controlling fire development.

Since then, the department implemented a change in strategy and tactics, demonstrated at this June 17 Manhattan highrise fire covered by Firefighter Spot (HERE).

EXAMPLES OF FIREFIGHTING LEAPS

The science of fire suppression is advanced in leaps. It was at the 1950 Fire Department Instructor’s Conference when Lloyd Layman’s presentation, Little Drops of Water, electrified the audience. The indirect method of fire attack was developed when Layman was commanding the Coast Guard Fire Fighting School during World War II. This presentation changed the design of automatic fire sprinklers. Once confirmed by Miami and other fire departments, there was a decade of using high pressure fog for indirect structural fire attack.

Purple-K, an effective potassium bicarbonate powder for extinguishing flammable liquid fires, was developed by the U. S. Naval Research Laboratory. Walter M. Haessler was a fire protection engineer who researched the effectiveness of Purple-K while certifying portable fire extinguisher performance. His 1962 NFPA-published monograph on Uninhibited Chain Reactions established the tetrahedron of fire concept.

The Seattle Guys” started about a decade ago after a couple of air management close calls. Recognized with the 2008 Tom Brennan Training Achievement Award, their activity within the NFPA 1404, seminars and textbook have moved fireground practice forward.  This link covers an earlier blog item about them (HERE ).

ENGINEERING ANALYSIS OF LINE OF DUTY FIREGROUND DEATHS

Since the 1999 line-of-duty death of District of Columbia fire fighters Anthony Phillips and Louis Matthews, staff from the Building and Fire Research Laboratory (BFRL) of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Fire Safety Engineering Division work to identify fire fighter survival factors. Starting with the Fire Dynamics Simulator, NIST has steadily increased the quality of fire development simulation with each analysis of a significant fire or full-size test burns.

Dan Madrzykowski and Steven Kerber shared results of the Building and Fire Research Laboratory experiments with wind-driven fires at the 2008 Fire Department Instructor’s Conference. NIST Technical Note 1629, Fire Fighting Tactics Under Wind Driven Fire Conditions: 7-Story Building Experiments was published in April 2009. The 593-page report summarizes earlier laboratory research, incident analysis, and field experiments on fire development, ventilation, and wind-control devices. The report also provides fire dynamic analysis from line-of-duty death investigations.

ENGINEERING ANALYSIS OF FIRE SUPPRESSION OPERATIONS

The NIST observation on TIC performance was confirmed by research conducted by Underwriters Laboratories with the Chicago Fire Department. Supported by the IAFC and funded by a grant from the Department of Homeland Security, the online course “Fire Behavior in a Single Family Occupancy” included research that confirmed the inability of a TIC to detect a fire below a floor, such as a fire in a basement. The components of the floor are slow to heat up. When the TIC identified hot spots, the floor components already were failing. Get to the online course HERE.

Former Fire Commissioner Raymond E. Orozco used the phrase “When Science Meets the Street” to describe the impact of the research conducted by the Underwriters Laboratories Inc. with the Chicago Fire Department.

Your summer school assignment includes reading the NIST technical note (HERE) and completing the UL course (HERE). Overachievers need to purchase and read The Seattle Fire Guys Air Management for the Fire Service textbook (HERE)

Shortly after, another ambulance was responding to the first crash when it collided with a min-van that was traveling without its lights on.

Police charged the taxi driver with failure to yield to an emergency vehicle.  They arrested the mini-van driver who was apparently drunk and refused to take a breathalyzer test.  Witnesses say that they saw him get out of the driver’s seat and climb into the back seat of the van following the wreck.

Of the eight people involved in both crashes, only the cab driver and his two passengers were hospitalized. The four paramedics involved were treated for minor injuries.  The driver of the mini-van was taken to jail.

FAMED PITCHMAN BILLY MAYS, owner of the voice that could send millions grabbing for their MUTE buttons, was found dead in his Tampa, Florida, home by his wife on Sunday morning.  He was 50 years old.

The police say there were no signs of a break-in, and investigators do not suspect foul play. The coroner’s office expects to have an autopsy done by Monday afternoon.

Update, 5:30 pm:
It was learned this afternoon the Billy Mays was on board the airliner that made the “hard” landing at Tampa International Airport yesterday.  WTVT Ch. 13 filed this video report on the close call Friday evening:

He later said, ”All of a sudden as we hit you know, it was just the hardest hitm all of the things from the ceiling started dropping.  It hit me on the head, but I got a hard head.”

The possibility of a subdural hematoma is now being considered.

A BRAKE FIRE ON A GERMAN RAILWAY CAR FILLED THE passenger cabin with a noxious gas Saturday evening.  The Regional Express local train operated by Deutsche Bahn came to a halt in Frechen station on the outskirts of Cologne after the fire developed in one of the brakes.

The train operator called in the alarm and the first on the scene was a car of four Rail Transport Police who used portable fire extinguishers to put the fire out.  However, the burning brake system generated an irritating, noxious smoke that started affecting the passengers along with the four policemen.  It was determined that the car’s air conditioner intake had pulled the smoke into the interior.

Adding to the problem was the inability of the train driver to open the doors of the sealed passenger car that was filling up with the smoke and the 90 passengers in it started panicking and trying to break their way out of the railcar.  The trains cannot open their doors on stretches of high-speed trackage until all rail traffic in that zone is brought to a halt.  Presumably the Deutsche Bahn does not want passengers standing on the tracks when an express liner suddenly appears at 210 mph.  (Firegeezer wonders why it’s preferable to keep them inside where they can all die instead of outside where only some of them may get killed.)

The responding fire and ambulance crews were faced with 90 victims suffering from various degrees of respiratory distress in addition to the extreme stress of the ensuing panic.  Eventually 18 people, including the four policemen, had to be transported to the hospital.  The passengers in the other railcars were unaffected by the smoke.

A nice, quiet Sunday morning so far.  I hope yours is  peaceful, too.  Here in the East we’ve been having a bit of a heat wave during the past week.  Nothing crushing, though.  In my little corner of the atlas we’ve even escaped most of the terrible storms that have been rolling through the midwest.  Maybe I shouldn’t have mentioned it for fear of jinxing our good luck?

I want to let you know about a “new” old fire website that has re-directed its focus.  The Western Pennsylvania Firefighting website has expanded into a timely blog format with a nice combination of regional fire news, blog reports and a mix of historical articles.  Editor Jeff Bertok is also including some news videos from the area.

hoopie-world

My frontiersmen-ancestors settled in that area until the frontier moved west again, so I’m always interested in what’s going on in that part of the country that has some of the nicest scenery east of the Rockies.  He is calling the website Hoopie World, and I don’t know where that monniker came from.  But I admit that it’s original.  So check out Western Pennsylvania Firefighting News & Information website and add it to your book marks HERE.

But before we get wrapped up with more fire videos, let’s get this equipment checked out.  I’m heading to the Bunn-O-Matic to make a fresh pot.

Carnage on Oklahoma Turnpike

Comments

Update, Sunday 7:00 pm:  A 10th victim has died, only two survivors remaining.

A FRIDAY AFTERNOON PILEUP ON THE WILL ROGERS TURNPIKE in Oklahoma left 9 10 people dead in what experienced troopers called the worst vehicle accident they had ever seen.

Oklahoma Turnpike Deaths

Tulsa World / Crow photo

The victims’ ages ranged from 7 to 69 and all of them died at the scene.  A 76-yr.-old tractor-trailer driver, Donald Creed, is being blamed for the wreck.  The Tulsa World summarizes what happened:

According to troopers, all the vehicles were eastbound on Interstate 44 when Creed failed to slow down as he came to an area of the turnpike where traffic was at a standstill. His rig struck a sports utility vehicle, knocking it into a ditch. Creed’s truck continued east, slamming into another vehicle and causing a chain reaction that involved four other vehicles.

Witnesses described the sport utility vehicle as being so mangled that it could barely be identified as a vehicle.

Creed’s truck eventually came to rest on top of three vehicles, pinning the drivers and passengers for up to nine hours.

The ninth victim of the crash wasn’t found until several hours later when a tow-truck was finally able to lift the tractor off of the car that it had come to rest on.  Rescue workers were kept on the scene for many hours because it was not known if or how many more people were entrapped.

KRJH-TV has this video report:

The turnpike’s eastbound lanes were closed for hours after the accident, which occurred near the border with Missouri and Kansas. Stalled traffic baked in 100-degree weather and emergency crews delivered water to some stranded motorists.

Some got out of their vehicles and walked along the highway shoulder while they waited. Workers from a nearby casino brought bottled water, and emergency officials brought a tanker truck to spray people.

I did not miss our appointment.

I was at the dealership on Monday.
While you told me you started work at 10 am, you were stuck in traffic at 11 am.
Mr. S gave me a vehicle to test drive.

When I returned, we met in your office. For reasons not clear to me, we were unable to move the process forward.

I submitted a credit application (which started this process), but we never discussed financing and there was no inquiry if I had a trade-in or offer to appraise it’s value.

It seemed that when I mentioned I was looking at other brands of vehicles this week, it stopped our discussion.

I left disappointed.

It may not be you. Later Monday night I went to a (competing dealership selling the same vehicle), where they were only interested in moving forward if I was going to buy that night. The sales person said that the purchase price changes hourly.

Your vehicle was my first choice. At two different dealerships I could not move the purchasing process forward.

That was NOT my experience with other brands.

I purchased a vehicle from an internet sales representative working for a brand that has a 58 day inventory of automobiles.

Chief Klauber Awarded Emergency Management Director of 2009

Concord, NH – George Klauber, fire chief and emergency management director of the Town of Derry has been named New Hampshire’s Emergency Management Director of the Year by the Northeast States Emergency Consortium (NESEC).

Christopher M. Pope, Director of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, said Klauber was nominated for the award for his work in directing his community’s response to the December 2008 ice storm, which caused widespread power outages, blocked roads and disrupted communications.

“Chief Klauber instituted door-to-door wellness checks on Derry residents to ensure their safety and used innovative means of communication, such as the town’s AM radio station and flyers delivered to homes by mail carriers and along with take-out food to provide information on shelters and other assistance,” Pope said. “His efforts helped Derry residents get through the ice storm safely.”

The award was presented at the fifth annual NH Emergency Management Conference, held June 23 in Manchester. More than 450 participants from state agencies, local communities and the private sector attended the conference.

NESEC is made up of the six New England states, plus New York and New Jersey.

COMPLETELY OBLIVIOUS TO THE PUBLIC’S PERCEPTION that the newspapers are rapidly losing whatever reputation they had for credibility, the USA TODAY paper has hired a dunce to write their headlines.  This is evidenced by this page published on their website Friday:

AN INDIANA MAN ALONG WITH HIS WIFE AND THREE CHILDREN were all killed in a particularly brutal wreck on I-65 in Lake County early Friday morning.  Brian Workman, 33, his wife Joanna, 31 and their three children ages 13, 8 and 1 were from Hobart.

They were traveling south in the Interstate shortly after leaving home for a vacation trip to Disney World and to visit the children’s grandmother who had never seen the youngest child.

They came upon a traffic backup caused by a car being towed off of the roadway creating a stoppage.  The Workman car was stopped right behind a semi-truck when another one came upon the stopped traffic.  The truck couldn’t stop in time and rear-ended the Wormans’ pickup truck, driving it into the rear of the first truck.  The collsion completely demolished the pickup and it started burning, the fire eventually spreading to the semi-truck that had hit it.
