DUNN’S CHAPEL, A WELL KNOWN FUNERAL HOME in Des Moines, Iowa, had a fire in the attic area under the roof of the large structure Monday afternoon.

Around 1:30 pm, smoke detectors alerted the employees to the fire and they were able to get the FD responding quickly.  While the fire was knocked down quickly and extinguished within an hour, there was still approx. $1 million in damages to the building.

The structure was expanded by combining two existing houses on the site with a connecting building.  The firm which also has an on-site crematory has been in business since 1913 and at that location since 1926.

There were four bodies on the 2nd floor being prepared for funerals, but they were not harmed at all from the fire.

The Des Moines Register has the full STORY along with two videos.

Go to the site with the videos and view the second video - Des Moines FD stopped a serious attic fire in an old and probably balloon construction building — the type of fire that often results in a total loss of the roof and a decision to bring down the building.

    Hats off to DFD!

An Indiana funeral director, I was sorry to hear of this fire, but at the same time glad to hear that there were no injuries or loss of life, due to the quick-thinking of the Dunn Funeral Home staff.
