Bacon – It's Not Just For Breakfast

BACON GOES WITH EVERYTHING, INCLUDING AN EMERGENCY CUTTING TORCH.  Theo Gray, “The Mad Scientist” has come out with a new book on Mad Science in which he demonstrates the flaming abililities of several common food products.

bacon-a-mikewalker

One of those is the assembly of what he calls the Flaming Bacon Lance of Death.  It’s a cutting torch that is made out of thin slices of prosciutto wrapped into tight tube shapes and then oven-dried to remove any moisture.  They’re next bundled around an oxygen hose and wrapped with some fresh ham slices to hold them together.

Gray writes:  Bacon is fattening because it contains a lot of chemical energy tied up in its proteins, and especially in its fat. You can release that energy either by digesting it or by burning it with a healthy supply of oxygen. The challenge isn’t creating the heat; it’s engineering a bacon structure strong enough to withstand the stress of a 5,000°F bacon plasma flame.

He made this video for Popular Science magazine to demonstrate his device cutting through a steel baking pan.  In the video he also shows another “vegan” torch made only with breadsticks and a hollowed-out cucumber:

Gray continues:  While researching how to build a vegetarian (torch), I hit on the perfect pipe material — hollowed-out cucumbers. The pressure-containment capacity of a standard cucumber is remarkable, and the smooth skin makes it easy to create an airtight seal with the pipe delivering oxygen to the device. A cucumber packed with beef sticks will burn for almost two minutes, and a completely vegetarian version stuffed with breadsticks, though not quite as long-lasting, still produces a very impressive flame.

North Carolina Ambulance Crashes, Rolls

Comments Off

A CAPE FEAR VALLEY MEDICAL SERVICE AMBULANCE was demolished when the driver Marco Lagos, 53, drove into the rear of a parked car that was off of the roadway.

The ambulance did not have any patients at the time, but a paramedic was in the front with the driver when he misjudged an exit from the Interstate highway and lost control entering the ramp.

The Fayetteville Observer reports:

(The driver) was cited for reckless driving, Trooper D.H. Kenan said today.  Lagos and another paramedic, Ginny Lynn Knowles, 25, were traveling east on I-40 when they exited to get onto Interstate 95, Kenan said.

An abandoned vehicle was parked on the right shoulder of the ramp. The ambulance ran off the right side of the road and hit the parked vehicle in the back, pushing it into a ditch, Kenan said.  The ambulance then overturned onto an embankment.

Nobody was in the parked vehicle.

THE CITY MANAGER OF MINNEOLA, FLORIDA, TOOK THE DRASTIC and unusual decision to shut down the city’s fire department for 48 hours starting at 2 pm Wednesday.  Mayor David Yeager will not say what caused the shutdown, but there has been an intensed dispute within the ranks of the firefighters pertaining to procedural issues that occurred during several emergency calls over this past weekend.

Yesterday the City Manager walked into the fire station and ordered all of the firefighters to go home.  Then he issued this press release:

minneola-a

Mayor Dave Yeager blames the closure on an internal dispute between firefighters that may have led to a violation of procedures more than once during several calls over last weekend. An investigation is currently underway.

It was reported last year that there had been many complaints filed by the firefighters against the fire chief for “irrational behavior” and for going over two years without any standard operating procedures for handling fires.

TV Channel 13 is reporting:

The head of Minneola’s Firefighters Union says the “city manager is overreacting” in how he is handling the fire department’s internal investigation.

Late Wednesday evening, the president of Minneola’s Firefighters Union told News 13 “the city manager’s investigation should be done while firefighters are on duty so they can continue to provide the same level of service to the community.”

The fire department launched an internal investigation to look into how a lieutenant and the crew worked together during several calls over the weekend, including a couple of medical calls.

The Lake County Fire and Rescue and the neighboring Clermont FD are covering the city of 10,000 during the interim.

A FIRE INSIDE A SOUTH PASADENA, CALIFORNIA, CITY PROPERTY YARD raced through the truck storage area Wednesday night around 9 pm Pacific.  The huge facility covering a city block is used to store, maintain and repair city vehicles and equipment, said Capt. Carlos Alderete of the Pasadena Fire Department.  The initial call was for an explosion which is believed to have been a propane tank that had been involved in the early stages of the fire.

It is too early to know yet what the cause of the fire was, but there are no reports of any injuries.  The fire was attended by the South Pasadena, the Pasadena and the Alhambra fire departments.

When it comes to the EMT stuff, I was always an Airway, Bleeding, A-B-C kind of guy.  Just keep ‘em alive until you get them to the hospital.  I just don’t have the inherent skills to get very deep into medical procedures.

One of my shortcomings is diagnosis.  Try as I may, I’m just not very good at it.  Oh, I can tell a broken bone ok.  But when it comes to asking 20 questions to narrow down why you have trouble breathing while your eyelid is twitching, or something, it’s  not my gig.  That’s why I never had any desire to go on to paramedic school.

But no matter how good you are at diagnosis, I’ll bet you never would have spotted this one when even skilled physicians were surprised when they got inside this man and found out what was really bothering him.  It happened recently in Russia when a young man complained about chest pains.  The surgeon was certain he had a tumor in his lung and they scheduled surgery to remove it.  But they ended up taking something else out, instead.  Take a look at this video and see what you think:

Keep in mind that this story comes out of Russia and historically they have been a bit loose with the truth for the past 100 yrs. or so.  But you still have to wonder, Did he or didn’t he?  Personally, I’m a little dubious of the accuracy of the story.  But again, if someone tells me “It hurts right here,” I can’t tell you why.

But I can tell you that we need some coffee, pronto.  So get started on the equipment check and I’ll go start the pot.

Dispatcher Defrauds FF's, Cops For $50,000

A FORMER NAPA, CALIFORNIA, POLICE DISPATCHER WAS CHARGED yesterday with 13 counts of grand theft, one count of forgery and one of identity theft, all felonies, after running a donation scam claiming that she had cancer.

Dannille Vanderpool worked for the Napa Police Dept. for four years and during that time she was honored as Dispatcher of the Year in 2006 and 2007.  According to the complaint filed with the court she falsely ran a donation campaign designed to raise money and among the major donors were $11,000 from the Napa Firefighters Assoc. and $5,800 from the Napa Police Officers Assoc.  Altogether more than $50,000 was collected, largely through the efforts of the Napa Firefighters who organized a variety of fund raising activities.

In an October, 2007 interview with the Napa Valley Register:

Vanderpool said she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2001 and had five separate relapses, the most recent in May 2007. She told the Register at that time she had surgery and was able to return to work. Vanderpool also claimed then that the cancer was back again a month after surgery, leading to chemotherapy treatments. She said the chemo didn’t stop the disease and that doctors recommended surgery, but then determined her kidneys were failing and that she was too weak for surgery.

napa-b

She went so far as to shave her head, telling her co-workers that she was “getting ready” and didn’t want to wait until the chemotherapy caused it to drop out.  She had a photograph taken of her wearing a blue headscarf covering her bald pate and using it for publicity purposes during the fund drives.

The scam started falling apart when co-workers started noticing some discrepancies in the things she was telling them and the overseers of the bank trust checking account found an unrelated expenditure.

The Napa Valley Register has the STORY.

9-Year-Old Charged With Arson

Update:  Video added.

A 9-YR.-OLD BOY IN HIXSON, TENNESSEE, NEAR CHATTANOOGA, was charged with aggravated arson and reckless endangerment yesterday after starting a fire that burned out a store while it was open.

Chattanooga Fire Dept. / Bruce Garner photo

The incident began around 6:00 pm Tuesday when the boy and his mother were shopping in a Dollar General store and the boy became angry with his mother about something.  WTVC-TV continues:

The boy told firefighters that he was mad at his mother, so he walked to rear of the store and set rolls of bathroom tissue on fire. He said he used matches that were on display not far from where the bathroom tissue display was located. The boy said he watched the fire grow for a while, and then made his way out the front entrance. The boy’s mother turned her son over to the fire investigators when her son told her that he started the fire.

The store manager, instead of calling the FD, went back and tried to put the fire out herself.  When the smoke got so bad that she couldn’t breathe, she evacuated the store and called the fire department.  By the time they got there, the fire had extended into the hidden ceiling and spread throughout the store.  The fire went to 2 alarms and the FD was able to contain it to the store which was in a strip mall.  It was a complete burnout that did over 1 million DollarGenerals in damage.

The boy was taken to the Juvenile Detention Center last night and was expected to go before a juvenile court judge this morning to face the charges.

KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI, POLICE OFFICERS WRECKED 3 cruisers in a span of 15 hours Sunday/Monday, keeping ambulances and police supervisors busier than usual.

kansascity-a-kcstar-blocher

Kansas City Star / Blocher photo

It all started around 10:30 pm Sunday night when a pickup truck ran a stop sign and broadsided cruiser #1, driving it across the oncoming lanes where it was struck by a second car.  Both police officers had to be extricated and are hospitalized.  The driver of the second car suffered broken ribs and the driver of the pickup was charged with 2nd-degree assault and DUI.

Three hours later cruiser #2 was rear-ended by a car whose driver jumped out and ran away.  He was captured shortly after by other units and the officers in the car were treated for minor injuries.

Twelve hours after that cruiser #3 was traveling to an area where there was an investigation for gunshots.  The officer drove through a stop sign and was struck by a van traveling along the cross street.  Both vehicles suffered heavy damage and the policeman was transported with a head injury.

They're Always On The Top Floor

EVERY FIRE AND RESCUE DEPARTMENT has a 600-lb.-patient story to tell.  Sooner or later, you get one.  And amazingly, they always are parked on the top floor of whatever building they live in.

Buffalo, New York, firefighters and Rural/Metro EMS were faced with one of these situations yesterday when a huge person who couldn’t stand up, let alone walk down the stairs, needed to go to the hospital.

Watch this video of the operation from WIVB-TV Channel 4 and see if you don’t agree that they did a fine job of handling the call:

CONTRA COSTA COUNTY (CALIFORNIA) FIREFIGHTERS faced a 2-alarm blaze at a Mexican restaurant in Pleasant Hill early Tuesday morning.  The initial call came in around 1:30 am, but the fire marshal estimates that it had been burning for 3 or 4 hours before breaking through the front windows and drawing attention.

Approx. 35 firefighters had the knocked down within two hours and were able to contain the fire to the restaurant which was in the middle of an unsprinklered strip mall.

During the operation the FF assigned to supervise the RIT was in front of the fire building and fell down, striking his face on the pavement with enough force to knock himself unconscious.  He was transported to the hospital where he regained consciousness later on but was admitted where he remains while they run some tests and keep him under observation.

NBC-TV has this video report which includes some fire footage:

The fire caused over $1 million damage to the restaurant, literally destroying it.  This was the second time in just over two years that it has been gutted by fire.  Just months after re-opening, the owner does not yet know if he wants to go through another year of reconstruction.

A Good Roadblock

DESPITE EVERYBODY’S BEST ATTEMPTS TO PROTECT AN ACCIDENT SCENE, there are always some drivers who seem intent on driving into parked fire trucks and already-wrecked cars.  Now most FD’s are having to run extra apparatus and plan their positioning on highway accidents just to assure the survival of the firefighters and paramedics working on the wreck.  A few months back we pointed out one department that was using a ladder truck for maximum protection and a car drove into it anyway.

A couple of days ago one of our readers John Sachen, a Senior Fire Instructor, was traveling up I-55 just south of St. Louis, Missouri, when he came across an accident scene being worked by Rock Community Fire and Rescue Dept. that had traffic stopped for a moment allowing him to take this picture of what he calls “doing it right.”  John points out:  Note the two blocking vehicles securing the extrication and triage zones.  Also see that with properly angled block vehicles the approaching traffic automatically moves to the preferred lanes without the need for extra law enforcement or firefighters directing traffic.

That is a very important view as we teach using block vehicles and angling them to direct traffic. Our success rate, when the procedure is used, is very high. When we first were made aware of the procedure I personally impemented it twice in a 30 day period and was astounded with the way it worked.

He also adds, “Hats off to the Rock Community duty crew!”

We’ve been chiding the Cincinnati (Ohio) Fire Chief for several months now over the continuing embarrassment of having a firefighter either arrested or fired for major misconduct at the rate of one every three weeks.  One of the more recent stories on it is HERE and it has links to previous reports that we’ve filed.  And it’s not just the fire chief but the police chief who has also been stricken with the same labor problems.

The city manager, who appointed them both, has apparently had enough.  He publicly told both of them to get their houses in order and they were unable to do it, with more arrests still hitting them.  The fire chief who refers to the citizens as “satisfied customers” has been particularly ineffective in reducing the incidence of bad behavior.  So this week the city manager announced that they will begin psychological testing of all applicants who want to be firefighters.  The Cincinnati Enquirer reported yesterday:

Future Cincinnati firefighters will start undergoing psychological evaluations again before being hired as part of changes city officials hope will reduce the number of firefighters in trouble and increase public confidence in the department.

The testing was stopped years ago, Fire Chief Robert Wright said this afternoon, but will resume with the next recruit class, expected to start in the middle of next year.

The chief, City Manager Milton Dohoney, City Solicitor John Curp, Human Resources Director Hilary Bohannon and Assistant City Manager Scott Stiles have started meetings with firefighters, a plan they will continue until meeting with all 840 (members).

Well, at least somebody has taken the initiative to do something productive about it.

It’s time for us to do something productive now, so let’s get the equipment checked out.  You know where I’m heading – to the Bunn-o-matic.  We’ll meet later in the day room.

Update:  STATter911 has a copy of the letter that Cincinnati Fire Chief Robert Wright sent to all the firefighters HERE.

Undress Your Beer

WHEN IT GETS WARM, YOU SHED SOME CLOTHING, RIGHT?  Starting with that bit of human nature, a trio of out-of-work musicians in Australia came up with a marketing idea that is proving successful.

After an evening of “drunken decision-making” they decided to try out a novelty that follows those drinking glasses that change their image as the drink is consumed.  They wanted a beer bottle that has a bikini-babe who loses her swimsuit as the beer leaves the bottle.

blonde-b

One of the dreamers has a chemical engineering degree (and no rock band gigs lined up) and he checked into some specialty inks.  Using his expertise and the groupthink they came up with Skinny Blonde Beer – the beer label that undresses as you drink it.

The trick is in the special ink on the label.  As long as the bottle is chilled, Daisy (as the 50′s-style pinup girl is called) smiles at you with her bikini covering the right parts.  But as the beer is consumed from the bottle, the label starts to warm up and the ink changes into another design.  Daisy goes topless.

blonde-a

They are a hit down under and are now working on getting licensing to sell Daisy in Britain.  You can read the full story of their experiments and results in the London Times HERE.

I don’t know how it would go over here, though.  After all, who wants to see Sam Adams in his ….. uhhhh.

Extrication Challenge In Bakersfield

A DRUGGED-UP DRIVER IN BAKERSFIELD, CALIFORNIA, CAUSED A 5-car crash Sunday afternoon that presented an extrication challenge for the fire department.

CHP officers say that the driver Brandon Cortez was traveling at least 90 mph in a 35 mph zone when he tried to go between two pickup trucks that were stopped at a traffic signal.  The resulting crash, which also damaged two other cars, left the occupants of the speeder’s car seriously injured and the car demolished along both sides.

The BFD utilized two engine companies and two Hurst tools to get the joyriders out.  KGET Ch. 17 has this video report:

When he’s released from the hospital, Cortez will be arrested on suspicion of a felony charge of causing injuries while driving under the influence of drugs and a separate charge of being under the influence of a controlled substance.

File this one under “Most Memorable Ambulance Calls.”  You can bet that they’ll be talking about this one for quite a while in Indianapolis. Late last week two men got into an argument around 1 am (the worst time to start arguing about anything, you know) and one of them grabbed a sword and threatened the other.  In quick order the other man also drew his sword.

No, I can’t yet tell you how it is that two enraged men were able to get their hands on swords on a moment’s notice.  But as they started parrying and foiling, the wife of one of them tried to break up the fight by getting between them.  That was wrong move #2.  She was fatally stabbed and that’s what brought the PD and EMS into the picture.  But wait, there’s more.

Yesterday the dead woman’s husband also died from the stab wounds he received from the swordfight.  Now the police have charged the other swordsman with his murder.  But they don’t know who to charge yet for the woman’s murder.

“We’re unsure yet who started this fight, how the swordplay got involved,” said Indianapolis police Sgt. Matt Mount. “We’re not sure who it was who stabbed the woman. We’ll have to do some testing on the swords and figure out who had which sword, whose blood is on which sword.”  That has to be logged in as “The PIO Quote of the Week.”  The lone survivor?  He’s still in the hospital under police guard……being treated for sword wounds.

Well, let’s take a stab at getting this equipment checked out.  I need to get the coffee started.  We’ll meet back in the day room.

THE MEMBERS OF TRINITY WALL STREET CHURCH in New York City found out last Friday when they logged onto their TWITTER pages and followed what was probably the first Passion Play to be presented live online.

The Christian Passion Plays have been performed for hundreds of years, originating as a way to show a largely illiterate populace the story of Christ’s final day before he was led away to be crucified by the Roman army.  The plays have been faithfully put on down through the centuries, gradually changing with the times to allow for contemporary staging effects.

This year the Trinity Wall Street Church, an Episcopalian church in the financial district of NYC, posted on their website:

What Would Jesus Tweet?

The accident took place north of St. Augustine, Florida, in the Intracoastal Waterway.  The pleasure boat was traveling at least 25 mph when it slammed into the starboard side of the tug which was tied up for the weekend at a dock construction site.  It is not yet announced whether the tug had any mooring lights burning.

Neighbors said that the crash sounded like a shotgun blast when it happened around 7:15 pm.  Florida Fish & Wildlife police say that most, if not all, of the occupants were in their early- and mid-twenties.  It isn’t yet known why the boat drove into the unoccupied tug.  Investigators are trying to determine whether alcohol played a part in the crash and if speed was a factor.

It was a busy weekend on the fire and rescue front, mostly a lot of bad news.  Houston FD is especially hard hit with the double LODD early yesterday morning.  Probably the best resource to read up on that event is the expanded coverage at STATter911.  Start HERE and click on his links to the earlier postings.  That tragedy came right on the heels of the news that the woman who was crushed by the ladder truck in that apparatus collision last week had died on Saturday.

That huge brush fire in Staten Island yesterday (our report HERE) was certainly a curiosity.  Here you had a wildfire with its unique demands being tackled by a fire department that is outfitted to fight structural fires.  Wrong clothing, wrong tools, wrong apparatus.  Of course, they got it done.  But it must have been quite the sight to see a tower-ladder being used on a brush fire.  You gotta work with whatcha’ got.

And probably the biggest property loss fire over the weekend was that large fire (can it be classed as a conflagration?) in New Hampshire where at least 40 dwellings were burned up in a matter of a couple of hours.  (scroll down to the next posting to see that one.)  They were mostly summer cottages that were unoccupied and protected by the FD of a town with only 900 permanent residents.  It was headlined with “11 Alarms.”  But that just means “Send me everything you’ve got” being sent out on the telegraph wire to whoever is on the line.  That was some battle and I feel for those poor guys who were up against it for as much as 12 hours in an almost-futile effort.  But like a wise man once said, you gotta work with whatcha’ got.

Did you notice that the sidebar video this weekend was featuring Roy Orbison?  I always liked his unique style of music.    I think his first major hit was his classic Pretty Woman which is still associated with him.  He was a true talent who not only sylized his music, but wrote a lot of hit tunes as well.  One song that he wrote, Blue Bayou probably earned him and his estate more money that anything he ever did.

After hitting it big in the U. S. in the early 1960′s, he went to Britain to tour and brought along with him as a follow-up act a rising group called The Beatles.  With the fast-rising popularity of the British rock genre, they soon became the lead group on the tour and Orbison was the warmup act.  Orbison and the Beatles were strong, lifelong friends after that.

One facet of his life that you might not know is the tragedy that struck his family.  Just two years after his wife Claudette (immortalized in still another of his song hits) died in a motorcycle accident, Orbison was touring in England in September, 1968, when his house back in Tennessee burned down.  Two of his three sons, ages 10 and 6, perished in the fire.  Roy’s parents who were staying with them managed to rescue the youngest boy who was 3-yrs. old at the time.

I think it’s time we got this equipment checked out now.  I need to start another pot of coffee, so let’s get going.  I’ll see you back in the day room.
