Wacko-Jacko's Car Hits Parked Amb. – Leaves

A PRIVATE AMBULANCE WAS PARKED IN AN ALLEYWAY BEHIND the Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles Wednesday when a high-dollar Escalade came flying down the driveway and sideswiped the ambulance.

According to the ambulance driver, the two medics were sitting in the amb. eating their lunch when the SUV knocked into them, causing him to bump his head on the window.  The car then pulled hastily into the loading area at the rear door and a man believed to be Michael Jackson was quickly escorted out and into the waiting SUV.  The medic Jamin Mauro, immediately started taking pictures, including this one of what appears to be the Gloved One getting into the Escalade:

wackojacko-a

Despite his attempts to get the car’s driver to exchange information and view the damage that he caused, the EMT says that the celebrity party drove away without acknowledging the accident.  He then filed a police report with the Beverly Hills Police.  Thursday morning Jackson’s driver voluntarily appeared at the police station and gave a statement.  No charges have been made yet.

KNBC-TV has the details of the story along with a video report showing all of the photos that Maurin took including some documenting the damage to the ambulance and an interview with him HERE.

A 3-ALARM FIRE IN JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA, BROUGHT 90 FIREFIGHTERS to the scene of a storage warehouse Thursday afternoon.  The business complex houses two firms, a general building contractor and a van-conversion business that prepares vehicles for wheelchair drivers.

The building involved was behind the two other workshops and contained mostly papers and file storage.  Two people were inside when the fire started, but they escaped the fast-growing fire successfully.  When the FD arrived on the scene they found fire coming through the roof already.  They had it out within an hour.

WTEV Ch. 47 has this video report:

Update, Saturday am:
Investigators quickly determined the cause of the blaze.  A man in the van conversion shop was using a welding torch and when a customer came into the shop he set it down without remembering to turn off the flame.

Does Anybody Remember GeoCities?

HAVE YOU EVEN THOUGHT ABOUT GEOCITIES LATELY?  The internet’s first viable social network announced yesterday that they will be shut down by the end of the year.

geocities-logo-a

Yahoo! bought the franchise back in 1999 for $2.7 billion (with a “B”) and then ignored it, just letting it founder along on its own.  And yet even today they are getting 11 million visitors a month to the community.  GeoCities, if you’ll recall, lets users design personal websites and display their photos or promote their businesses, all at no charge.  They announced that they are not accepting any new accounts now and will be closing “later this year.”

The AP reports that GeoCities is not the only Yahoo !service to get the ax — Yahoo! Briefcase, Farechase, My Web, RSS ads, Yahoo! Pets, Yahoo! Live, Kickstart and Yahoo! For Teachers all are being eliminated as well. The search giant also recently outsourced Launchcast radio to CBS Corp.

Anyone logging onto their signup page are now being referred to their webhosting site that charges $5.95 a month.  Yahoo!’s earnings for the first-quarter of this year dropped 78% below last year’s first-quarter.

Thirsty Thursday in Indianapolis

Firegeezer is correct, I am trying (and failing) to be like Dave Statter, stay up all week and sleep through the weekend. Unlike earlier “vacations” at FDIC I am spending a couple of hours every day doing administrative and educational tasks so I can keep my job at a major east coast university.

WHERE IS THE WABASH BALLROOM?

When I was talking with The College Network guys last year, they planned to bring their big booth to FDIC. They could not get space in the big hall and are hanging out with the federal and professional association groups in the Wabash Ballroom, on the Maryland Street side and across from Exhibit Hall D.

A colleague and Firegeezer supporter, John Sachen, stopped by to say hello.

The exhibit floor is jammed, the weather is excellent for the outside demonstrations and there is a bus shuttle for the weary to go past the Phase V construction to get to the huge Lucas Oil stadium. It is a challenge to get to all of the booths in one day, especially when you run into friends and associates on the floor.

CANNOT GET AWAY FROM COLLEGE STUDENTS!

Lake Superior State University Fire Science program made it’s second trip to FDIC this year, bringing seven students to work both the LSSU and the TCN booths. Dr. James Schaefer, who has an extensive collection of unique footwear, says that I will be be impressed at what he will be wearing today. I was shocked last night to see him in sneakers, I think this the first time I have seen him wear ordinary footwear.

The Eastern Kentucky University Fire & Safety technology students were in force as room monitors, facilitators and big room ushers. They have been a fixture at FDIC and it is always great to talk with them. They are part of the incident management system, as this picture shows the accountability board from a first floor sector chief.

WILL THE ALCATRAZ BREWING COMPANY BE READY FOR FFN?

Shocking news while walking by the Circle Centre Mall last night, the Alcatraz Brewing Company was CLOSED! A note on the door said that they suffered a water main break, but will be cleaned up and ready to go tonight. Hopefully, you are wearing your unique FFN t-shirt today and will stop by Booth 3731 and get a drink ticket. Gathering starts after the exhibits close at 5:30.

Well, we easily went over the 200-Followers mark on our Twitter account yesterday.  The number jumped up seven slots to 203, and that’s not counting one spam site that I blocked.  If you have a Twitter account you have to be aware of the spammers there, too.  When you get the email saying that so-and-so is now following you, take a moment to click on the link in the email to see just who it is.  If their bio says they’re a hip-hop record producer and they’re following 3,792 Tweeters, but only 42 are following them, you might want to consider ushering them out the door.  When you’re on their bio page, just go over to the right column and click on the “block” link.

For a while early on, I would occasionally get a new follower whose picture was a neck-to-waist shot of a Hooters girl and all the entries were “check out my website” stuff and valley girl talk.  But Twitter’s own spam filters seem to have gotten a grip on those.  (A “grip?”  Shame on you FG….ed.)

We’re still getting some of the fallout from that ridiculous stunt that the city manager of Minneola, Florida, pulled last week when he shut down the FD for 48 hours because two FF’s had an argument. (Click HERE and follow the links back for the prior articles.)  Now the city council has hired an outside attorney to investigate the situation that pits the city manager and his patron the mayor against the rest of the council and, apparently, the entire citizenry.

During Tuesday’s council meeting the mayor continued his tirade against the firefighters saying that they’re “dysfunctional” and they have “a lot of issues.”  The council chambers were populated with not only citizens, but the members of the FD along with FF’s from neighboring departments that were there for support and even some sheriff’s deputies.  All of them felt embarrassed and insulted by the mayor’s condescending tone throughout the meeting.

Self-serving politicians show up everywhere, don’t they?

One more item that I want to point out this morning is another headache arising for the Washington, D. C., Fire Chief  who’s just been hit with a breaking news story about some serious shortcomings in the EMS department regarding cheating on tests and inadequate perfomance standards.  STATter911 has good coverage of it this morning and it’s worth checking out.  This one has the possibility of mushrooming.  Read about it HERE.

We’d better get this equipment checked out now.  I’ll got start the next batch of coffee.  We’ll meet back in the day room.

THE HORRY COUNTY, SOUTH CAROLINA, WILDFIRE continues to burn and spread this afternoon as the humidity is dropping.  As of 3:16 pm, WMBF-TV is reporting:

  • The fire has consumed 15,000 acres and is still spreading.
  • It is 75- to 80-percent contained.
  • At least 69 homes have been destroyed and another 29 damaged.

As we mentioned in our earlier report, WMBF-TV is running a “live-blogging” style of continuing report on their website HERE.

An unidentified blogger put this map on Twitter showing the areas that have been burned and the evacuation zones:

Bothell Update

Following the many reports on Tuesday about the sudden departure of their fire chief (Firegeezer story HERE), including a statement by a fire department spokeswoman that it was preceded by a city investigation, the City of Bothell, Washington, issued the following press release yesterday:

City of Bothell Statement on Former Fire Chief

Bothell, Wash. – City of Bothell provides the following statement regarding former Fire Chief Warren Burns:

Warren Burns resigned from his position as Fire Chief and Emergency Management Director for the City of Bothell on March 31, 2009. Chief Burns was responsible for managing the City’s Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department. The department’s 2009/2010 biennial budget is 17.9 million dollars, and includes staffing consisting of a Deputy Chief, 54 uniformed officers and firefighters, and nine civilian personnel. Another Stolen Ambulance

A MINDLESS THIEF DROVE OFF IN A HOUSTON, TEXAS, FIRE DEPT. AMBULANCE yesterday while the medics were inside a store tending to a patient.

KTRK-TV reports:

Just after 5pm Wednesday evening, two EMT’s from Station 17 in the Second Ward responded to a call at the Family Dollar Store near Navigation and York. A woman inside needed medical attention.

When the EMT’s came outside, their parking spot was empty. The $100,000 HFD ambulance was gone. It wasn’t responding to a call, rather on a short joyride.

A tracking device on the unit located the ambulance over a mile away at Commerce and York. When Houston police arrived, the ambulance was abandoned. A quick search of the area for the suspect turned up nothing.

The GPS receiver allowed the police to find it within 10 minutes and they have taken as many fingerprints from the driver’s side as they can in hopes of finding a match.  The ambulance was not damaged and nothing was stolen from it.

THE WILDFIRE THAT STARTED YESTERDAY AFTERNOON in Horry County, South Carolina, near Conway (see Firegeezer report HERE) continued to spread overnight.

Following an expected calm at 11 pm, Forestry officials were hoping to make some progress against the fire during the night.  But the wind returned shortly after midnight and ran the fire further east and into the area of North Myrtle Beach.

horry-d-wmbf

Around 4 am the fire jumped Hwy. 22 and started spreading into the populated areas.  More than 40 homes have been burned so far.  Update: A later report is saying that more than 70 homes have been destroyed so far.

At 5:30 this morning SC Forestry Commission spokesman Scott Hawkins said they believe the fire spans 7,000 to 8,000 acres, and despite some media reports the fire is not under control at all.  Forecasts call for weather conditions to start worsening around noon today.

It looks like things are rolling at the FDIC.  We’re enjoying FossilMedic’s daily updates.  But when he writes something at 4 am, I get to wondering, is he still awake or is he just waking up?  Or is he doing a Statter and only sleeping on the weekends?

WISH-TV has this early video report on the FDIC from the stadium:

I’m jealous that I can’t be at the Friday night party Firefighter Nation is hosting at the Alcatraz Brewing Co. brewpub.  I hope somebody sends us some pix of that one.

This is the first FDIC that is being pulled into the Twitterverse (the universe of Tweeters, for you newbies) and I see that several attendees are already Tweeting their activities.  I expect it to pick up today when the exhibit hall opens and some live-blogging begins.  If you have a Twitter account, you can go to the search engine and enter the hash tags #FDIC and/or #FDIC09.  Folks are showing up on both, most of them on the former so far.

Speaking of Twitter, I’m closing in on 200 followers – up to 197 this morning.  So maybe I’ll hit #200 today.  Who will it be?  Will it be YOU?  I hope so.

No Tweeting until after we get this equipment checked out, though.  I need to get some coffee going, pronto.  (A little Spanish lingo for you folks in the Southwest.)

Double Fires Facing Conway FF's

CONWAY, SOUTH CAROLINA, FIREFIGHTERS ARE HAVING one of their busiest days with two major fires in progress this afternoon.

Major Brush Fire Claiming Homes

A brush fire was first reported at noon today in a lightly populated area near Conway, but due to the dry and windy conditions it has spread rapidly.  So far, one house has been consumed and at least 50 more are considered to be threatened.

conway-a

Myrtle Beach Sun News photo

At 3:20 pm the fire had burned 150 acres and was 25% contained, according to Scott Hawkins, spokesman for the S.C. Forestry Commission.  ”The fire is still spreading,” Hawkins said. “More homes are threatened, but no subdivisions are in the path, possibly individual structures.”

Thirty homes and several county buildings have been evacuated so far.

WMBF-TV is updating this story regularly HERE.

Landmark Restaurant Burns

Updated, 5:00 pm

Shortly before 3 1 pm this afternoon a fire broke out in the kitchen of the Sidewheeler Restaurant, a landmark eatery in Conway.

conway-b

WMBF-TV image

The restaurant was open at the time and the first-arriving units found the building engulfed in flames.  It is still ongoing and no further information is yet available.  It is not known which FD responded to the call due to so many units tied up at the brush fire.

Update:

WBTW-TV Ch. 13 REPORTS:

Capt. Jeremy Carter with the Conway Fire Department tells News13 some 50 firefighters were at the scene and it took about two hours to get the fire under control.

Carter says the windy conditions made the fighting the fire difficult. He says the fire destroyed roughly 90 percent of the restaurant.  He also says it will take a while to determine how the fire started.

No injuries were reported.

Pumper Donated To Alabama VFD

Nicol VFD’s upgraded Engine 1

The charitable trust that was established in honor of an FDNY firefighter who perished in the 9/11 massacre, purchased and delivered, at no charge to the Nicol VFD, a Pierce Arrow Class A fire engine.

It will be replacing a 1971 FMC that will in turn be handed over to another needy department in Tuscaloosa County.

Longtime Firegeezer readers may recall that the Nicol VFD was the home of the “Dalmation Chicken” stunt that was pulled on a bunch of city slickers many years ago (see our posting on it HERE).

Firegeezer adds:  This is a wonderful story that illustrates what is going on behind the public’s view frequently.  Truly, firefighters helping their comrades when in need.

And there are so many other rural departments that can use this kind of help that it makes you wonder about places like the Washington, D. C. FD that give away even better apparatus than this to a foreign country in exchange for a week’s stay at a Caribbean resort hotel.  The word “charity” has different meanings in different places.

A Nationwide Problem

Comments Off

FIRE AND EMS DEPARTMENTS EVERYWHERE, and especially the all-volunteer squads, are facing the problem of maintaining adequate facilities for their apparatus and equipment.

With the evolution of larger and more complex vehicles in the last 15 years and a exponential growth of response demands, many of them are hard-pressed to keep their buildings modern and functional.

This good video report from WSYR-TV in Syracuse, New York, exemplifies this continuing challenge by reporting from a nearby VFD in Onandaga County:

Minneola Still Unsettled

Comments Off

HOLDING THEIR FIRST MEETING SINCE THE INFAMOUS Fire Department Shut-down, the Minneola, Florida, City Council got itself embroiled in verbal attacks and accusations in response to the city manager’s decision to close the entire fire department for 48 hours last week.  (See Firegeezer report HERE.)

Despite the city manager’s claim that he had the full backing of the city council when he did that, it turns out that the mayor is the only member who did support the bizarre move.  Some city council members went so far as to say that they were never even advised that it was being considered in the first place.

The mayor, obviously on the defensive, kept trying to move the meeting on to other agenda items, but the council kept hammering on the topic for a full hour.  During the session they asked the city manager several questions, but he just wrote them down and said that he’d answer them later.  Referring to the mayor’s statement last week that “the fire department is dysfunctional,” the vice-mayor who has been the mayor’s main protagonist throughout this said, “For him to get on camera and say the things he said about our fire department and our fire department personnel you know it’s a good thing that they are the professionals they are and they’re still going to respond to your address when your address comes up because by God I don’t think I would. I think I would let you sit and die.”

Finally they voted to do what political bodies always do, they decided to have an investigation into what happened.

TV Channel 13 has a video report from the meeting HERE.

It looks like Mike “FossilMedic” is really in his element now (scroll down to see his posting earlier this morning).  All camped out at the FDIC in Indianapolis with prime housing right across the street from the convention center.  And he seems to be particularly happy to be within a few strides of a Steak ‘n’ Shake.  I can’t blame him there.  As we mentioned yesterday, he’ll be spending time at The College Network booth #106 on the exhibit floor, so be sure to stop by and let him know that you’re a Firegeezer follower.

And speaking of exhibit booths, a “must stop” is the Firefighter Nation display at booth #3731.  They’re giving away free T-shirts to the first 1,000 collectors who show up on Thursday beginning at 2 pm.  Their really biggg shew will be on Friday evening when they host a blow-out at a pub around the corner called The Alcatraz Brewing Company from 5:30 to 8:30 (that’s PM, guys…PM).  Did you know that FFN has over 37,000 members now?  Wow.  You can meet up with a lot of them Friday night so click HERE for the details of the party.

*  *  *  *  *

What do you think about that latest move by American LaFrance?  Just a year after their much-publicized relocation from North Charleston to their established plants in New York and Pennsyvania, they’re pulling everything back down to South Carolina again.  Workers at the Ephrata plant were saying that partly-finished trucks on the line were just sitting there and not being worked on because ALF wasn’t getting the parts they need to make the trucks.

This video report from WIVB-TV in Buffalo comes from their Hamburg, N.Y., plant:

When they were in Charleston they had the same situation, but they were blaming it on IBM claiming that a faulty computerized purchasing program was at fault.  I’m speculating that the real fault lies in a failure to generate enough new sales to sustain the operation.  Remember that they are currently owned by a speculative investment firm that doesn’t know diddley about how the firetruck market is sold.

Most fire & rescue people don’t want to see them fail because of nostalgic reasons, ALF being the historic fire engine builder that they are.  But it sure doesn’t look good, does it?

Orders are down, but we have to keep our own apparatus ready to go, so let’s get it checked out now.  I’ll get the coffee going again.

The Fire Department Instructor's Conference is my grown-up version of Christmas.  I have missed few conferences since I attended my first one when I was assigned to the Academy.  Significant others, friends and family believe that THIS is my vacation trip every year.

Hands On Training sessions (HOT) run on Monday and Tuesday.  Bobby Halton, Fire Engineering Editor-in-Chief and FDIC Education Director posted the following note on Twitter Tuesday night (HERE):

20,000 plus of the best completed over 38 workshops and participated in over 150 hands on training evolutions at the worlds best show FDIC

Classroom presentations start Wednesday and run through Saturday. Exhibit Hall runs Thursday through Saturday.

TUESDAY CHECK-IN

Driving into Indianapolis, I miss the RCA dome landmark (see destruction HERE) and see another hotel under construction near the Indiana Convention Center.  FDIC is one of the four largest annual events at Indianapolis, with 30,000 attendees and probably 10,000 vendors, staff and family members.

First step is to get the "Badge Holder" from registration. That includes the Show Guide and other items. The registration staffer mentions that they had about 25,000 attendees pre-register, about 5,000 more than last year.  They have had some cancellations from fire departments that were cutting their budget.  Do not know how the financial situation will impact the on-site, walk-in, registrations.

PAYING IN FULL FOR ADVANCED REGISTRATION IN 2010

The second step is to complete the advanced registration for the 2010 conference.  One reason the 2009 preregistration was much higher was due to an opportunity presented at last year's conference.  By registering and paying for the 2009 conference at the 2008 conference, you get an opportunity to apply for housing in September, months before other attendees or vendors can submit their requests.

For the first time in a decade, I am in an affordable hotel adjacent to the convention center.

While the hallway vendors were setting up for Wednesday, the Pennwell booths are open and crowded.  Chief John Salka, taking a break from his HOT presentation, signed his new book, The Engine Company.  I also got John Norman's Fire Department Special Operations text.

I had other business in the city, but did make time to duck into the Indianapolis Motor Speedway's Hall of Fame Museum.

Suddenly on Monday afternoon the local emergency dispatch center began getting multiple calls for an apartment building on fire.  After the fire was extinguished there were two units gutted and four more heavily damaged.  The boy told investigators that he had made the “flame thrower” and accidentally set several different items on fire in his apartment.  The fires expanded rapidly and he was unable to extinguish them.

The ten people that were in their apartments at the time all escaped without injury and the damage is at least $100,000.

THIS TIME IT’S SHINING IN SASKATOON, SASKATCHEWAN.  The entire town is in an uproar this morning after learning that the staff at Saskatoon City Hospital had refused to  see a patient, who was wearing a hospital gown, that had collapsed just outside the doors to the emergency room.

Instead, they called 911 for an ambulance.

saskatoon-city-hosp-a

Saskatoon City Hospital

The Saskatoon Star Phoenix reports today:

Ken Olson, a Saskatoon contractor, was on his way to a meeting Monday morning when he noticed a man in a hospital gown lying on his back “less than 10 feet” from the entrance to the ER.

“I parked and ran in through the emergency doors and said, ‘You’ve got someone in hospital clothing outside your doors unconscious,’ ” he said.

Olson said he was stunned when staff responded by phoning 911 for an ambulance. He says they told him policy prevents hospital staff from attending to patients found on the grounds.

The Provincial Health Region told the newspaper, “The health region believes trained paramedics or first responders with the proper equipment are better able to treat patients found outside the hospital.”

And they stuck by their policy and refused to send a doctor or nurse out the door to even see if the patient (who was obviously previously admitted) was even breathing.  Read the entire article HERE.

BOTHELL, WASHINGTON, FIRE CHIEF WARREN BURNS has abruptly resigned from the fire department, city officials announced yesterday.

Chief Warren Burns
City of Bothell photo

Burns had been placed on administrative leave on February 20 and has been away from the department since then.  Last week he sent an email to the FD staff that he had resigned effective March 31.

The Everett Herald is reporting:

Bothell city spokeswoman Joyce Goedeke said she could not provide details about why Burns was placed on leave, saying it was a personnel matter, and private.

Burns is a well-known Snohomish County fire official who served the city of Everett for nearly 25 years before taking the Bothell job in September 2006.

His departure was preceded by a city investigation, Bothell Fire Department spokeswoman Lisa Allen said.

When he was selected for the post, he was the top candidate from 42 applicants.  The city is now opening a search for a replacement and Deputy Fire Chief Rudy Alvarado has been appointed the acting chief .

Minneola FD Update

YOU PROBABLY REMEMBER MINNEOLA, FLORIDA.  That’s the town where a screwball city manager shut down the entire fire department for 48 hours because two of the firefighters (one of them a Lt.) got into an argument over a medic call.  Read the Firegeezer report HERE to catch up on it.

We want to remind you folks who live down there that tonight will see the weekly meeting of the city council where the fire department is planned to be on the agenda.  Other considerations on the FD they are considering are a large additional tax to keep the FD budget in the black and a proposal to reduce the manning of their only fire engine to two…..the driver and the officer who will have nobody left to do the firefighting….. or to argue with, either.

*  SConFire is breaking the story on ALF shutting down their two plants in Pa. and N. Y. and now moving all their production back to South Carolina.  Not surprising considering the state of fire truck  purchasing these days.  Check back at his website HERE for updates.

*  FireRescue1 tells us that they will be Tweeting from their booth (no. 6030) at the FDIC this week.  You can follow them on Twitter @FireRescue1

*  Fire(fighter)Behavior has some good points in his essay on why we search stores anyway, even though they’re closed.  Bill’s thoughts are always worth following HERE.

*  Wildfire Today is back again with this year’s report on the rocket war that takes place in a Greek town every Easter.  A crazy, centuries-old tradition has two church congregations square off and fire over 50,000 homemade rockets at each other’s churches.  The result is always a score of scattered building fires around the city.  Check out the STORY HERE for this year’s report and a video of last years barrage (scroll down).

*  For the first time, we’re going to put Firegeezer in this update column.  We want to remind you that FossilMedic (Mike Ward) will also be at FDIC.  He will be in booth 106, The College Network, where he’ll be promoting his degree program that he runs at that “major East Coast university.”
