Lets look at the facts:
A citizen observes and reports the fire.

A first arriving police officer does his duty to warn and attempt to remove people in harms way. He sees the need to act, and act quickly. He is the hero. Do The Right Thing.

The city in a very bad move had closed a nearby fire station.

A delayed respose from distant stations injures 4.
Including the officer.

It's no time to place blame on any one for starting the fire. Let the investigators do that.

Career or volunteer we are here to do the same job.
We have bigger problems to deal with then fighting with each other.

I have served with both and our job is to save lives, put out fires and serve our community.

And in the end,
Anyone who sets any fire with the potential to harm others or actually hurts anyone needs a rope or life in prison.

I hope all injured recover.

I agree, I think the first idiot poster just wanted to get a debate going. But to insinuate that the department was involved was below LOW!

Can we ignore the idiot that suggested arson on the part of the FD, and forget about Career vs. Vollie for one minute and concentrate on the FACT that in two separate instances fires have occurred where FF's efforts were drastically hampered by the idiot City Hall Dwellers.

We will never get anywhere w/ our fight to keep station houses open they way we bicker and in-fight amongst ourselves.

The cinching of the noose on all municipal safety is showing its dreadful side. This could have been prevented, but as long as it doesn't affect the people making the decisions, its of little concern.

On the vollie vs. paid FF's. Our county and 95% of our surrounding counties are completely made up of vollies. I am damn proud to be in this proffesion, even as a vollie. Yes, I would love to get paid for it, but that aside, it is not a hobby and we put our life on the line the same as any other members across the states. Our 5 department borough is constantly doing in-house and certified training. And to make a statement of arson against a department or it's personnel is outrageous. Lastly, we have to do fund raisers since we don't have a borough or county budget to buy us our equipment, maintain our buildings, etc. How else would you expect an 18-25 member company to pay for $300k to $1+ million for apparatus, gear, etc. "Yes, you can be a member, but you need be trained and we will need $75k dues for your first year!"

as a retired professional FF of 23 years and founder of a VFD in an formally unserved, area I resent all the comments about vollies.

Seems "brotherhood" to some begins and ends with the union decal on the rear window. In my modest experience the brotherhood always went deeper than that.

I'd rather spend time with my brother VOLUNTEER FF's than a bunch of overpaid whiners with matching decals. I've seen more sacrifice of time, money and comfort with my volunteers than I ever did with my pro's.

All antagonism aside, there are enough fulltime/volunteer idiosyncrasies without attacking our own. We all have the common trait of running into burning buildings while everyone with any sense is trying to run out.

layoff the vollie=firestarter comments and I wont be forced to retort with all the recent paid FF incidents that make the news here. (Cincinnati ?)
